Restaurants, nightspots and shops surround the Sprint Center

By JOYCE SMITH | The Kansas City Star
Bopping to Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets” is one big reason to visit downtown Kansas City for the opening of the new Sprint Center on Saturday. But more than 50 restaurants and retailers within a three-block walk of the new arena are hoping to become a regular draw, too.
They offer visitors an eclectic mix ranging from decades-old restaurants and stores that have hung on through downtown’s decline and rebirth to new cutting-edge concepts hoping to cash in on the coming boom.

Downtown — long known for blocks of boarded-up buildings — is blowing off that image with an estimated $4.1 billion invested in the area in the last seven years, including the $850 million Power & Light District now under development across the street from the Sprint Center.

So here’s a friendly piece of advice that downtown entrepreneurs are offering visitors — avoid the traffic, come early, stay late and check out the new heart of the city.
“You don’t know how happy I am. I’ve been waiting 2 ˝ years for this,” said Thelma Oliver, owner of the Mango Room, just a short sprint from the Sprint Center. “But you know … it’s going to be gridlock. And people are just going to go, ‘Yeah, we might as well go sit down somewhere until it dies down.’ ”

Hungry? Chow down on fried green beans or jambalaya rice balls at the Mango Room. Thirsty? Hoist a brew behind the big picture windows at Willie’s Kansas City sports bar, right across the downtown loop south of the arena. Want to just hang with the beautiful people? Chill out with cheese and wine flights at JP Wine Bar and Coffee House.

Grinders (bikers welcome) offers a taste of the East Coast with south Philly cheese steaks topped with Cheez Whiz. There’s a sculpture garden out back. The more refined Kansas City Cafe showcases local foods and products. You can even take a walk on the wild side at gentlemen’s clubs Bazooka’s Showgirls or Totally Nude Temptations.

Time Out Deli, in the food court of high-rise City Center Square, has built a booming weekday lunch business by offering sandwiches and specials like pan-fried chicken, along with a convenience store.
The new Madrigall, a martini bar and restaurant, is on one of the quieter blocks near the Sprint Center, so it gets noticed through nightly promotions — from poetry readings on Mondays to best hat contests on Tuesdays and live music on weekends.

Sprint Center construction workers have been loyal to the year-old 13th Street Grill and Bar, but it’s building dinner business with steaks, seafood and pasta. The location, across from the Jackson County Courthouse and Jail, also offers a close-up view at all sides of the law, from jurors pondering cases, to lawyers celebrating victories and people waiting for jailhouse visiting hours to start.

“The buzz is around, definitely, and if Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney come, I guarantee people will be down here drinking until 3 a.m.,” said Andrew Rowland, owner of the restaurant. “We’re ready to party.”
(Brooks is coming to the arena on Nov. 14.)
But for those who don’t want to stray far from their comfort zones, there are the national chains — McDonald’s, Starbucks, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and KFC/Pizza Hut.

Those into shopping as entertainment can obtain everything from a $35,000 marble and chintz Italian sofa at Retro Inferno to watercolors and jewelry by a local artist at Images Art Gallery, custom-tailored suits at Slabotsky & Son Tailors, and fine wines and gourmet products at Cellar Rat Wine Merchants.
Clint Miller staked out his ground in October, opening a trendy men’s street wear and sneakers store, Phenom, just a half-block from the arena. He depended on destination customers until recently, when walk-in traffic started increasing for his premium denim, vinyl toys, Adidas limited-edition Halloween-themed sneakers and Kidrobot hoodies.

For longtime River Market residents and small-business owners Bob and Nikki Deal, the opening of the Sprint Center means walking rather than driving to attractions.

“I was dodging detour signs, but I’ve been excited ever since the development first started taking place,” Bob Deal said. “The whole growth of downtown Kansas City is outstanding. It’s phenomenal — business, entertainment, living — you couldn’t ask for more than that.”

And there’s more to come.
The Power & Light District will offer dozens of restaurants and retailers, many new to the area, when it officially marks its grand opening next March for the Big 12 basketball tournament. But two entertainment district operations — Vinino and McFadden’s Sports Saloon — will open in mid-November. Landscaping is done, but twinkle lights are still to come.
And the locally owned Crosstown Station is planning a mid-November opening south of the arena on McGee Street. The venue will feature live music — everything from low-key musicians at happy hour to national rock bands late at night.

But for scores of entrepreneurs big and small who have placed their bets downtown, the wait for the Sprint Center is almost over.
“Everybody on my payroll will be here October 13th,” said Oliver of the Mango Room. “It’s what we’ve all been waiting for and you have to be ready. We’re very, very excited.” <HR class=infobox-hr-separator>
The Sprint Center is expecting 17,000 people for the Elton John concert (his production will take up about 1,500 of the seats). But the Kansas City Repertory Theatre also will have a matinee and evening performance at the Copaken Stage on Saturday that could bring in as many as 640 more to downtown. And 550 people are expected at a wedding reception at the Town Pavilion.

Yep. I signed up with Sprint a month ago. Its horrible. Other than that, I'm Ok with them...

I've had Sprint for 8 years, minus 6 months I tried out T-mobile and the call coverage was horrible.

Sprint is way ahead in terms of technology, though they have been hurt by other competitors that have cut into their niche market of offering the coolest phones like when they started business.

You're right about the customer service, partly. It's a hit or miss game with them, and you have to know how to go about getting hooked up, but it does take some luck of getting a good rep and finessing the situation.

I pay $68-70 (tax included) for 3 lines that all have unlimited text, powervision, free roaming, pcs 2 pc2, nights starting at 7pm, and share 1500 minutes a month.

We never even come close to going over our minutes, but they have been nice enough to give me a 20% discount b/c of where my brother works, waived the $10 charge for additional lines, waived the $10 charge for unlimited texts per line, and reduced the cost of the powervision and roaming on 2 lines and free on the other.

Customer service may be horrible sometimes, but I couldn't even dream of getting that price anywhere else!

Over on Phog someone took pictures of the area from yesterday.. you can check out more at:

http://forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=172&f=2488#s=172&f=2488&t=1192577&p=3

Word has it that the sight lines are beautiful, and that even from the back row its a good spot. Seats are supposed to be VERY comfortable and have individual foldback arm rests. Concourse is very big, but gets a little narrower at the corners. I love that they have the exposed views to the outside of the arena on one end.

Genesis did this in Europe earlier this year, it was a really neat idea. Broadcast it in movie theaters in high-def with 5.1 surround. I think the next logical step is to film a concert for IMAX. That would be wild.

I went down to the Sprint Center last night to check the place out. It's everything that I expected. The scoreboards are freakin' sweet, the LCD runner that goes around the front edge of the upper deck is freakin' sweet, the concourse width is freakin' sweet and they have Quick Trip's with slushy machines. The escalator ride up to the top is pretty freaky, it's a long way up. The girls didn't like the fact that there was so much gray everywhere. The seats were really comfy but in the upper deck they're really small. I can't wait to see some basketball in there.

How could anyone not like hockey?!?

Because it's basically SOCCER ON ICE. The fights are OK, but much like auto racing, where the only true excitement is the crashes, the fights are too few and far between.

To be fair, I was on the verge of being a hockey fan once. Had a roommate who had played semi-pro and was an avid puckhead, and I even went to a couple of games. But I lived in Chicago, and Cheap Ass Dollar Bill Wirtz and his shitsucking Blackhawks cured me of that. After he shitcanned Roenick, Belfour and Chelios, and the Hawks basically turned into the doormat of the NHL, I quit caring and never started again.

Dollar Bill mercifully died a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully his kid will take steps to save the franchise from his idiot ass father's decades of inept mismanagement.

Fact. Hockey live is amazing. Even watching the warm-ups is quite amazing to see how much puck control these guys have. I live in Chicago now, and goto Blackhawks games just for fun. As bad as they are, going to the games are still a blast, and sitting club level and having a server makes it even better.

I also grew up as a young kid watching hockey late night with my dad because I had growing pains and couldn't sleep. I grew all but 1 inch by the time I was in 7th grade (I'm 6'2), and the rate that my bones were growing I would be in severe pain trying to goto bed at night. Mostly in my legs. But, my dad grew up in Buffalo, and was a big Sabres fan... slash Gordy Howe fan, so we'd watch hockey late night when I couldn't sleep, back in the day.

As for soccer (football), living in London previously, I will say that many people won't grasp the excitement that it generates. The Premiership (English soccer league) is amazing! IF you went to a few games, you'd realize that the crowds have the same enthusiasm of a college football game, and the degree of coverage by the media is absurd. They literally take a paparazzi level of coverage of the players, and you can't help but being amazed when seeing it in person.

Because it's basically SOCCER ON ICE. The fights are OK, but much like auto racing, where the only true excitement is the crashes, the fights are too few and far between.

Hockey is DV's offense. You will generate plenty of chances to score (granted, unlike his offense, you obviously don't score nearly as often).

Soccer is like Herm's offense. You will get 2 good chances to score each game. Better take advantage of one.

Official countdown to HonestChiefsFan telling us downtowns are all crime ridden bum and prostitute infested slums and nobody should ever go to or live in a downtown area...

Good for him but I don't think I would ever pay that much for jeans. My Levi's are working for me. But if I had Millions to spend.....

Actually, you need to work on your politically correct terms. The PC term is not bums. It is "Quality of life Violators" according to the San Fran Chronicle.

Not all downtowns are that way. KC will have to make sure it stays clean and get the thugs to stay away since the parking makes for so much walking in areas that are not historically very safe. Right now there is not a lot of room for much but construction equipment in downtown.

The drive bys and street crime is south and east of downtown for now.

Yay, somebody gets it!

The KCPD is planning on a bike brigade for downtown events, as well as the KC development people that have been standing on the street corners for the past several months during the day.

With 10,000 spots right around the Sprint Center, and another 10,000 within a square mile, I don't see it being a huge challenge to make sure everyone gets from and to their car safely.

No chit, you don't think they have thought of this? If the suburban Mom's and Dad's can't make it safely to their car from the Hanna Montana show the whole Downtown revitalization will fail. If you can't walk safely to the bars and night life from the Center it will fail.
