When someone breaks a kick return or long pass/running play and has broke out in the open, why are there TONs of blockers leading the way instead blocking the guys from catching up?

I was watching the GB & Wsh replay and Favre's pass to D. Lee would've been a TD if the WR would've blocked the guy that caught up to Lee instead of "leading the way".

They've been playing FB all of their lives and I've never understood why they don't block the people catching up instead of "no one that's left in front".

Maybe they think that that would be "blocking in the back". Remember, these guys aren't pro football players because they're geniuses.

Usually they just want to show the coach they are faster than the guy carrying the ball.

Damn I miss having a good kick returner. I wonder what chances are of the Bears releasing Hester? :hmmm:

I hate it when that happens.

I hate it when they atleast don't slow up to the cuys catching up. just get in their way. In highschool one of my friends used to block the person who was in the process the of tackling the ball carrier many times they would slide right off of the ball carrier and provide a big bang. all while i was getting pancaked ha

I remember my high school coaches always stressed not to hit anybody behind the play, I guess it carries on into the pros as well.
