Ready? 100 observations about today's game, in no particular order.

1. When we need running yards, we should just run straight behind Waters, like we did near the end zone.

2. Whoever is responsible for the short passes on 3rd down needs to be benched or replaced or something, whether it's Huard or Solari or Herm. We can't continue to give away 2 or 3 possessions a game. This frustrates the living daylights out of me.

3. I hope this victory doesn't end up being expensive with the injuries to Tony G and Jared Allen. Neither one was as effective when they returned. Let's hope that they're both short-term dings.

4. See Note #2.

5. I was astounded that Bowe got that one first down where he leapt over the guys. It looked like just another stupid play call a la Note #2. Bowe really rocks.

6. PLEASE stop building our passing game plan around Kris Wilson. We've got Bowe and Gonzalez who can catch anything including the wind and Moby Dick, and we continually throw low-percentage passes to Wilson.

7. See Note #2.

8. Terry appears to be outperforming Turley at RT. And what's the deal with Turley's injury? He wasn't listed on the injury report today. And by the way, I saw that Kevin Sampson was promoted from the Redskins' practice squad to their roster today.

9. See Note #2.

10. Welbourn is our worst offensive lineman, which surprises me. Our left side is actually pretty strong.

11. I like Rayner as a kicker, even if he does occasionally miss one. I don't worry every time he lines up. He really needs to get a different picture taken, though.

12. I like it when we play against strong-legged kickers, because Eddie Drummond takes the touchback and we get it on the 20.

13. Did you know that Drummond actually has one of the top ten punt return averages in the league? That's amazing.

14. See Note #2.

15. Those Ford "swap your car" commercials brag about unethical behavior. The market research industry specifically condemns marketing that is done under the guise of market research, and that commercial brags about doing so. "We didn't tell them who we were...we just said it was market research!" Idiots. Ford has used the same marketing company since the 1950s and they should've switched about 45 years ago.

16. Do you think Jared Allen disappeared today because he was hurt, because the Raiders started double-teaming him, or because he just runs out of gas in the second half. He seems to consistently fade in the second half. (Note that I'm not criticizing him at all since he's a football god. I'm just noticing.)

17. See Note #2.

18. See Note #15, because it really annoys me.

19. Tamba Hali...milk carton. Anybody seen him lately?

20. Alphonso Boone is a force. Why on earth did the Bears let him go? He's a really active defensive tackle. He doesn't always get pressure on the pass rush, but he does sometimes and he plays the run well.

21. Derrick Johnson really knows how to tackle. He brought his man down every time, including a huge stick on that one third down that stopped a drive.

22. Did y'all see the mouth-breathing, spinal-cord-thinking fan who threw his drink on Tony G in the end zone? Tony looked at the moron, then looked at his arm, then waved dismissively. I wish NFL security would throw out invisible-EEG brain chiggers like that.

23. See Note #2.

24. Donnie Edwards is having a pro bowl season. Dude is making plays all over the place.

25. I was glad to see Ty Law come back.

26. Jarrad Page makes a living off of the Raiders.

27. Greg Wesley is getting his meanness back. I like it.

28. See Note #2.

29. Colquitt is a good fit for this team. Without intending to be facetious, Herm's philosophy benefits from a good punter.

30. Why oh why can our punt return team never even slow down the other team's gunners? Seriously, we might as well not even try to block them. I never think to see what non-blockers we have out there until I see the gunner running down on top of Drummond. Who are these guys, and why can't they learn how to block?

31. See Note #2.

32. Ronald Curry couldn't catch a cold if he fell out of bad. Let's hope that he starts for them forever.

33. Robert Gallery is a bust of colossol proportions. They're trying to hide him at left guard and he still can't compete.

34. I laughed my uvula off when that Raider center forgot they were in the shotgun.

35. I have no idea why the Raiders like Lamont Jordan so much. They need to get a starting running back if they want to compete.

36. Stuart Schweigert makes me laugh. He's one of those guys who talks like he's a big-time player, and the only time we ever see him is when he's getting burned or beat or run over. He's the Wile E. Coyote of safeties.

37. See Note #2.

38. I was glad when they called Curry for throwing the ball on one of his multitude of drops. I was all like, "I know that wasn't technically a spike, but still...."

39. I'd like to see an analysis of the expected value of surrendering with a run on third and long versus the expected value of trying to complete a pass for the first down. I have a feeling that the studies that support giving up don't take into account the full value of the occasional first down that is attained.

40. Whoever is responsible for the short passes on 3rd down needs to be benched or replaced or something, whether it's Huard or Solari or Herm. We can't continue to give away 2 or 3 possessions a game. This frustrates the living daylights out of me.

41 through 100. See Note #2.

There was a post by a Raiders fan over at their board. He was sitting in the same section as the guy who threw the beer on TG. He said the guy was escorted out in handcuffs.

Thankfully, Ford finally hired a new head of marketing last week. They just got Toyota's old head of marketing. Anything is better than what they've had for the last 10 years.

Well, that's good news. I doubt that the imbecile is a stranger to jail.

They need to ditch J. Walter Thompson as their advertising agency. Their ad lameness would decline considerably.

With #16, i'd say its a combination of all 3.

#27, i agree...did you notice that one tackle he made where after the guy was down he threw an elbow to his head??? Obviously it wasnt going to hurt the guy, but the ATTITUDE of it had me screaming.

I think you are misdiagnosing the short passes as the disease when they are really just a symptom of the real problem which is an offensive line that can't hold blocks and not enough receivers that can get open. You throw it short to avoid sacks and interceptions, allowing you to punt it away and live to fight another day. It's part of the deal when you have a team that plays to its defense.

We're not even trying to get first downs on 3rd and long. I could tolerate an incomplete past the marker or a sack. At least then we were trying. It would also stretch the field, back up the defense, and make the shorter pass work later. We make the defense's job easy. I wish our opponents would always throw short of the marker.

These "incompletions and sacks" will inevitably be interceptions and fumbles if you only throw past the marker. We did it our way today, did not have a single turnover, and won. We try it your way, and I think the results would be much worse.

3rd and long is hard on the road against good defenses. When your defense is dominating, and your offensive line is getting beat - the prudent thing is to live to fight another day.

I won't bag on you for the "did not have a single turnover" comment since you are a reasonable poster. Honest mistake.

There is risk in allowinng an inferior team to hand in a game. Herm thinks that risk is okay while the risk of crushing a team that you are better than is too high. The best teams don't do that. The Pats risked injury to Brady to bring him back in after the 2nd stringer threw a pick six. The best coaches bury bad teams when they get the chance.

I messed up the pick - I forgot about it and did not yet check the box score. The pick was a bomb on 1st or 2nd down and not really pertinent here anyway.

I would not want the Chiefs to play this way if we had Tom Brady, and all his millions of weapons.

I want to play this way with Huard, the Chiefs O-line, and only 1 legitimate NFL wide receiver. It gives us the best chance to win with a team that most NFL "experts" predicted would be competing for a top 5 draft pick.

Competing for a Top 5 Draft pick would not be such a bad thing unless you believe we have a good chance to represent the AFC in the SB.

Rainmain,

I agree completey with your takes. I too can't stand the short passes on 3rd and long.

I hope someone in the media asked Tony G. this week about the drink thrown on him in the endzone.
I would like to hear or read his thoughts on that.

That shot that Tony G took Sunday might have been the biggest hit he's taken in years. Tony is one tough SOB.

yup, his weak arm overthrew Bowe.

yup, his weak arm overthrew Bowe.

That's not caused by weak arm, but poor technique.

He doesn't do it on every throw, but it seems like many times he throws with his upper body instead of his arm (looks really awkward) and when he does that, he doesn't follow through very well.

Having played baseball enough, I know if you don't follow through, the ball tends to sail on you, which describes Huard's throws, especially when he's trying to throw the outs.

Extra Point

Another:

Huard did actually throw the ball down-field. Another yard longer, Bowe would have had a TD on the only long passing gain of the day.

The pick was a bad read and a "duck" throw. But it didn't bother me much. In fact it left the Raiders with terrible field position.

The short throws on third and long are mind numbing though. These are not "check down" throws. If they were, I wouldn't have a problem with them. The ball gets out quickly and short of the marker. It's a high percentage throw, but in the last four games, we've only converted 7 of our 3rd and 9 yards or more attempts. (30 tries).

The bummer isn't just the low percentage (23%), but the real bummer is that Huard has actually COMPLETED a lot of these throws... Just short...

short of the maker is "safe" but depending on YAC with a D knowing where the marker is..."and you not getting there" is just dumb.

so punt and play D the Herm way.

Huard likes to check down. That could have a lot to do with the offensive line. Of course, MU makes a living throwing short and letting their athletes get YAC.

Or just try to throw a long bomb and if it gets picked count it as a punt.
