I won't be flying anytime soon. This is coupled with mass retirement of air traffic controllers. Lower paid less expierienced controllers are taking over.

Thanks. I have flights next Wednesday & Thurs. Timing is everything, for sales meetings.

"Among other results, the pilots reported at least twice as many bird strikes, near mid-air collisions and runway incursions as other government monitoring systems show, according to a person familiar with the results who was not authorized to discuss them publicly."

Sorry, but this is not a big deal. If people realized how close they come to death every time they drive, they'd never leave their homes.

The fact remains: one fatality per 4.2 million departures, IIRC.

I hate flying.

No you don't. You hate the concept of becoming a lawn dart.

No, halfway through a flight I wonder if I might not be better off as a lawn dart. Very, very little of airline travel is enjoyable.

The problem is just in its initial stages of "bad", two years from now is when the system will be strained the most.

I hate both.

Is the sky falling or is it just the objects in it that are falling?

That will have an impact on my planning.

Yeah, I'm flying to Dallas for 114 dollars round trip on the 2nd of November. It's literally cheaper to fly to Dallas than drive. Maybe it's because they are passing of the savings from the lower paid controllers no?

Just think, My resume will be headed off to the airlines around the first week of Nov...

How scary is that????

"But the government is withholding the information, fearful it would upset air travelers and hurt airline profits."

Someone is clearly just trying to embarass the President. This is clearly being withheld to protect us from the terrorists.

So statistics compiled through after-the-fact phone interviews are more accurate than the real-time reporting systems?

Something is wrong with the standard reporting systems.

ATC link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpRdSCJ9wKY), gets interesting at 7:30

That is one job I would DEFINITELY not want, especially for the small pittance they offer. We need to find a way to pay ATC's more money, to attract good candidates for those positions.

It is probably the most stressful job in the world. I'm not talking about the tower people who basically just handle runway traffic, but the people who handle incoming and outgoing airspace. When you do well, its basically thankless, stuck in a dark room under the tower and not paid nearly enough. However, if you lose your concentration, let your mind wander, and make just ONE mistake... then maybe a couple hundred people die.

No thanks. Lots of respect to those who prevent midair collisions everyday.

On top of that, we've also apparently got lots of pilots with English problems. (English is the universal aviation language, all commercial pilots in the world must speak English)

And finally a really funny audio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUnVlyyar4M) of a Tower Controller having a very bad day when a couple planes take off out of order.

The problem really isn't the candidates, we get lots of good prospects. The problem is that the current pay structure they've imposed is forcing many of them to go elsewhere. Those that stay are hoping this contract issue gets resolved in the near future.
