For a short yardage, goal line situatio and with the crappy O-line that we have now, with no real FB, with the underperforming LJ and the 2007 version of Priest, who would you rather have run the ball?

:hmmm:

Priest. He was a great short-yardage back.

LJ. With the crappy state of our OLine, I'd rather have our more powerful back get it and muscle his way in.

No question in my mind, Priest. He totally gave it up to score.

LJ. Power. Priest in his prime.

LJ's a great goal line back and everything, but there is literally no defense for Priest's five-yard leaping soar through the air.

With this OL where you're getting hit in the backfield? LJ.

You can't dive over guys getting pushed backwards.

I would say Priest. With LJ, we'd probably run it up the middle. Wellbourn has been underperforming and Wiegman is too light. He's not a mauler. I think LJ would get stuffed. But, with Priest, they'd probably put in Tony G and Dunn and run a perimeter stretch play. Priest can run east to west behind his blockers and find a crease like he used to do.

depends on the defense.....

if they are a fast defense, then LJ

if they are a defense with great DT's like the jags, then Priest.

when LJ powered into the endzone against the faiders , did anyone see him holding on to Brian Waters as he fell ..... got a little extra leverage. :)

Priest. Pull somebody - anybody - and run the stretch. I can't think of anyone who made more of his blocking than Priest.

right now with what I've seen it's still LJ's power, but I won't hesitate to change my vote in a few weeks if Priest looks like the Priest of old....

LJ's power. Priest usually scored on "Student Body Left" or "Student Body Right", and we don't have to horses up front to pull that off.

Only Sweetness launched over the pile better than 31.

Also, his stature lets him "get small" down low better in a crowded area.

If you mean Priest in his prime, it's not even really a fair question. Priest was one of the best scorers ever.

If you mean Priest now, I don't think anyone knows yet.

What power has LJ exhibited at the goal line this year? What are you guys watching.
Priest all the way, inside or out or over the top.

Err... 3rd-and-one at Oakland's goal line on Sunday?

LJ bowling over one of the best young MLBs in the NFL for the score?

Lets not kid ourselves, no matter how much we hate LJ or love Priest... LJ has a heck of a lot more power than Priest, and when LJ wants to, he will run guys over. He did it on Sunday to prove it and Priest, on the other hand, would've been stood up in the same situation, as a lot of backs would've.

Agreed. If we had the Oline and the scheme we had before which allowed Holmes to shine (as well as LJ), I'd say it was a toss-up. But considering the Oline and the scheme we have now, I don't know how Priest would be able to do the things at the goal line that LJ can do with his power.

Those who have correctly pointed this out are spot on, IMO. While those who ignore this fact are simply enamoured with Priest to the point of not recognizing the obvious.

Ignoring the obvious is a winning strategy, Mr. penchief. Just ask Herm.

But, even if it wasn't, in a circumstance where I absolutely, positively had to have two yards with this o-line, I'd choose Priest because of his vision and ability to take full advantage of the blocking he has. You can stuff a power runner, but you can't stop the wind.

I agree that he is more patient and can take full advantage of his blockers, however, time will tell the tale. Minus the eight-yard run on Sunday, Priest would have been 3 carries for 1 yard, and would have been one pass for -6 (that's not what I'd call a full force gale).

I admire what Priest has done for this team in the past. And I recognize that he can help this team now. But, IMO, the overriding factor is the offensive line and the scheme and not Priest's magical powers.

Priest benefitted from the scheme of the previous regime,

To duplicate that under the new scheme would be a dream,

Priest did nothing on Sunday to give your argument any steam,

So the Priest vs. LJ debate is back to square one, it would seem.
