Does anyone know if the CDMA-based cellular networks in the US are encrypted on the RF side? If so, I need to know somewhat urgently. Please PM if you have any knowledge.

Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know if Jared Allen uses an ecrypted phone. Perhaps you can ask when he calls.

Verizon. Data. EV-DO and/or 1xRTT.

DO is highly encrypted, only the NSA has the type of hardware necessary to live decrypt it. 1x is a different story by far.

Great. So, does 1x have any encryption/security? It's still spread-spectrum, but anything beyond that?

Not enough headroom in the protocol to deal with the extra traffic of high encryption. Additionally the processors in 1x devices usually suck.

Understood. Thank you. That answers my question.

I'm stunned that there is virtually no security at 1x.

It has the same "security" that your voice calls have.

Bear in mind that when 1x was created it wasn't being used to transmit credit card numbers.
