I guess I'm not paying close enough attention to life lately but I thought "The Duke" referred to John Wayne (just do an internet search) but now it seems Elway is attempting to usurp this title from a true legend. Anybody know anything about this; background, reasoning, etc.? Just curious.

Perhaps you misunderstood and they really said "The Douche".

He really did do some of his best work when he was flushed out of the pocket.

Elway was referred to as the Duke by many well before he retired... it's a friggin nickname. Big Deal.

I've only heard some tards over at that donkey board call him that.

Nickname wise, Lenny the Cool > The Duke

Elway? ROFL

"The Duke" was either John Wayne (film), Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (music), or Duke Snider (sports). :harumph:

The fans of Old Horseface need to find another nickname.

There is only one "Duke"

Nope. His claim on that nickname was preceded by both Duke Ellington and Duke Snider.

Marion Morrison (aka John Wayne) is "a" Duke. Not "the" Duke.

I never heard of Elway refered to as "The Duke" but I don't care. Some call him Horseface but that was always Shannon Sharpe at my house. To me, the Duke will always be John Wayne but feel free to call either Sharpe or Elway Horseface.

John Wayne is/always will be the "Duke." Old horseface could possibly lay claim to the "Puke."

But if you say "The Duke" 90% of people think Wayne. Duke Ellington is called "Duke Ellington" by most. It doesn't matter who got there first, John Wayne kicked their asses and sent them home to momma.

I might have to agree with this. Palance too. Still neither one of them is "The Duke" so John Wayne's safe.

Agreed, and good point with Palance.

I'd be very tempted to add Steve McQueen to that short list as well.

He's too cool to be in that group. "Cool" wasn't what Palance or Marvin offered. Unless you thought be the baddest bad ass walking was the height of cool.

Good point, he just always struck me as a natural "badass" along with being cool. Some of his real-life antics...damn.

He was also the guy who talked a young Chuck Norris into going into acting. For better or worse.

John Wayne could kill all the bad guys and still have time to take the little lady to town.

He was the Chuck Norris/Jack Bauer of his day.

John Wayne walked that way because of time spent on horseback, instead of Mr. Elway's Coors Buttplug.

I've heard Elway called:

Horse Face
Mr. Ed
The Big Chipmunk
Draft Dodger

but never...

The Duke.

Unless you think he looks like a jock strap, which is, plausible.

It's nothing official... Elway didn't recently have a press conference and call himself "the Duke". I've heard players and others refer to him as "the Duke" for years before he retired.

It's weird to see some of the things you guys latch on to and run with around here.

Len Dawson has never called himself "The King", Elvis already owns that one.
Did you know he made $49M this year, that's probably more than Dawson and Elway combined, hell more than The Duke too.
