Obviously, he hasn't tried CPiggy. For the low, low price of $199, you may obliterate those who fall into the "won't miss" category into oblivion. Think about it. Pay Simplex and then come back. Personally, I'm using it but I'm not paying Simplex. I know a man of Tim's scruples would feel obligated to send Simplex a nice check though.

I doubt it. If you look over the long haul we have lost a ton of quality posters who either don't post much or at all anymore. If you look over the last 6 months the BB has changed a lot. Go back two or three years you wouldn't even recognize it if it wasn't for a few posters.

I agree, there's always some balless douchebag trying to call somebody out from behind his keyboard because that's the nature of the internet. At some point though when it gets overrun by that type it's not a place you want to hang out as much anymore. 80's flashback!!!!

Patty Smyth Goodbye to You Lyrics
Those times I waited for you seem so long ago
I wanted you far too much to ever let you go
You know you never got by "I feel it too"
And I guess I never could stand to lose
It's such a pity to say
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holding on
The days are dull, the nights are long
Guess it's better to say
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
'Cause baby it's over now
No need to talk about it
It's not the same
My love for you's just not the same
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love won't stand the pain
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love...
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Now, could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
Yeah, I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holding on
The days are dull, the nights are long
Guess it's better to say
Goodbye to you

Actually I find it kind of funny that anyone would go that far to 'not see' something that another person posted. I've heard quite a few people speak of freedom of speech here and now they are turning their back on the one of the principles of the founding fathers.

If you don't like what someone says all you have to do is not respond. I've found it very effective in the past couple of months.

As long as he didn't mention the planet, then I don't care what he did, as that could end up in us losing game video (even though I really haven't been to interested in them this season). Let's start with... Obvious: 'scuse me, is that your nose or did a bus park on your face? Meteorological: everybody take cover, she's going to blow! Fashionable: you know, you could de-emphasize your nose if you wore something larger, like... Wyoming. Personal: well, here we are, just the three of us. Punctual: all right, Delbman, your nose was on time but YOU were fifteen minutes late! Envious: Ooooh, I wish I were you! Gosh, to be able to smell your own ear! Naughty: uh, pardon me, sir, some of the ladies have asked if you wouldn't mind putting that thing away. Philosophical: you know, it's not the size of a nose that's important, it's what's IN IT that matters. Humorous: laugh and the world laughs with you. Sneeze, and it's goodbye, Seattle! Commercial: hi, I'm Earl Scheib, and I can paint that nose for $39.95! Polite: uh, would you mind not bobbing your head? The, uh, orchestra keeps changing tempo. Melodic: Everybody. He's got...
...The whole world in his nose!
Sympathetic: aw, what happened? Did your parents lose a bet with God? Complimentary: you must love the little birdies to give them this to perch on. Scientific: Say, does that thing there influence the tides? Obscure: whoa! I'd hate to see the grindstone. Well, think about it. Inquiring: when you stop to smell the flowers, are they afraid? French: saihr, ze pigs have refused to find any more truffles until you leave! Pornographic: finally, a man who can satisfy two women at once! How many is that?
Fourteen, Chief!
Religious: the Lord giveth... and He just kept on giving, didn't He? Disgusting: Say, who mows your nose hair? Paranoid: keep that guy away from my cocaine! Aromatic: it must wonderful to wake up in the morning and smell the coffee... in Brazil. Appreciative: Oooh, how original! Most people just have their teeth capped.
[he pauses, pretending to be stumped, while the crowd urges him on]
All right. Dirty: your name wouldn't be Dick, would it?

That dolly grip is likely paid on an hourly basis. And certainly not one to receive money from royalties, which is where piracy makes an impact. By the time a movie is pirated, that dolly grip has been paid all the money he's going to see from that film.

Every industry has its haves and have nots. I certainly don't live in a multi-million dollar house just because some of my bosses do. A job is a job. Of course, crew members are also paid according to a union scale wage, Mr. KC Fish, which means that a film's revenue has almost zero impact on how much they make. However, if film piracy reached a level that affected future budgets, shooting schedules, and crew requirements, our dolly grip could see his/her income reduced due to cutbacks based on lowered revenue expectations. That's where scale gets fishy and things get tight for the grip.

And therein lies the rub.

See, I LIVED through that SH*T.

I moved out to Los Angeles because it was the only place for me to go for a career in music (Nashville's not my thing and NYC isn't either). I worked crappy jobs, lived in apartments that were filled with cockroaches (and often work up with them crawling on me), ants, crackwhore apartment managers, working at freakin' Guitar Center, dealing with drugged-out band members (heroin) and so on and so forth. I spent Christmas of 1993 ALONE in my sh*thole apartment, with gunshots and helicopters going off all night. I went through a breakup with a girl from KC who came out with me (and left after 6 weeks because she couldn't take LA) and all sorts of other crap. And I mean CRAP. (My crappy car got broke into 3 times, I lost my only TV during the Northridge Earthquake and had to sell guitars to pay rent).

But 10 years after I moved out here, I now live in a great neighborhood, own a beautiful house and have been married for 6 years. Life if great (if not amazing). But I'll never forget what I had to go through to get to this point. Living off of credit cards, living off of $7 dollars a week for groceries, riding the Los Angeles Metro Bus for 18 months (and having a lady puke on me one day) and being dirt poor.

Nothing in life is easy. Sacrifice is usually mandatory.

So from my point of view, you have absolutely NOTHING to be bitter about.

Except for your own choices.

For every famous spoiled multi-millionaire douchebag actor there are hundreds of people behind the scenes who are neither rich nor famous busting their asses. Every industry has its haves and have nots. I certainly don't live in a multi-million dollar house just because some of my bosses do. A job is a job. Do you think the guys who clean up the seating area at Arrowhead after the game are having their cake and eating it too because the players are rich?

I hear what you're saying Fraz, but I think the point that Demon was trying to make is this, do the guys cleaning up arrowhead lose money because the game is streamed online?

They'll certainly lose money if the rich assholes who control the business feel they aren't getting a big enough slice of the pie (i.e., damn near all of it).

Remember this line the next time you feel "victimized" by pirates. YOU made your career choice, they don't always work out the way you plan. There are a shit ton of people out there that bust their asses and go through exactly what you just described. They go on and are successful in their careers. Doesn't mean they make millions of dollars for doing it. Forgive me if I'm not upset that entertainers may have their salaries lowered. Let's not pretend that piracy is going to make you homeless. You'll just make less money. It'll still be more than the working stiff. Get over it.

You're right there. Only option would be to go on strike and demand more money. Or choose a different career I guess. Everyone is trying to make a dollar off of everyone else, I just don't feel sorry for those that have the most dollars to begin with. If I'm an asshole, I'm an asshole. I'm just going to save my pity for those that have nothing, and can't seem to get past that.

Nice rationalization. Maybe you should *think* before spewing such inane, immature bullsh*t.

I have many, many friends that work "behind the scenes". Production coordinators, craft services, gaffers and set designers. If piracy in the entertainment business were to continue and cut profits, the trickle effect would be disastrous. Those people would have reduced salaries or lose their jobs altogether. How would they afford their mortgages or their car payments? How about their children?

Next time you watch a feature film, watch the credits. While there may be two or three "topline stars", there are HUNDREDS of people whose job is it to bring these movies to life. And believe me, they are FAR from millionaires.

Think about that. In addition, it is ILLEGAL.

Though apparently, that isn't your concern.

I think the bigger problem is the quality of the work.

I can't think of anything playing right now I'd want to pirate. For free.

I know King's "The Mist" will suck but I liked the story so I'll likely go anyway. Outside of that I'm just not impressed. I'd say the same for music. Outside of Tool/Perfect Circle I haven't bought an album since 98 or so.

And I suppose the two are related. The more crap Hollywood puts out the more people get pissed off at the ticket booth. The more pissed they get the more likely they are to rent/pirate movies. I'm not saying it's right or fair but the overall quality of product has been lacking of late...

It's not an argument Dane. Reading comprehension must be a problem for you. I'm not arguing that it's ok to pirate. I'm saying I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR MONEY. Just so we're clear. I don't do it. I don't need too. If I respect the music enough to listen to it and want to own it. I'll buy it. My statement is, I don't care if piracy costs you money. Not one lick. Forgive me if I focus my pity on the working class who don't have adequate health care to pay for medical expenses incurred through a life time of labor, rather than the multi millionaires who have to move out of their castles and take their kids out of their private schools. Again, I'm convinced the trickle down of piracy will affect top line stars, no one else. Without the grunts, you don't have the movie. Those guys will get paid, it doesn't cost much to pay them. All of them put together don't make what Brad Pitt does for the tripe that's put out.

I really don't think that's what drives piracy. People need to be entertained. People like going to the movie theater. But once something is "free", there's a certain segment of the population who feel entitled to receive music or movies for free. There's been bad music and bad movies forever. But until the Internet Age, profits weren't affected.

For example, many here are familiar with Radiohead's decision to allow people to download their latest release for whatever they'd like to pay. As it turns out, 62% of the so-called "fans" downloaded it for free. The other 38% paid on average, $6.02 per album download. That's significantly less than the $14.99 price it would have in a retail outlet.

Why?

Because there's an entire generation (if not two) that feel that music and movies should be free. Therefore, music and movies have NO value to these people. It has NOTHING to do with the quality of the product. It's that since it's available for "free", there's no worth attached to the product, good or bad.

It may not affect the movie business in the short term but if piracy were to grow and affect the "bottom line", it'll definitely affect long-term planning and decision making. Which ultimately will mean less movies.

Amen to that! The last movie I saw in a theater was Braveheart. I now wait until it comes out of DVD and watch at home. The movie business is well aware of the DVD phenomenon (I own over 300 DVD's). As a matter of fact, the business depends on revenue from DVD sales.

DVD sales are roughly double the box office. So if a film does $100 million at the theater, it's likely to do $200 million in DVD sales.

There are many amazing movie theaters in Hollywood but I only visit one: Arclight Cinemas on the corner of Sunset & Vine. It's the only theater in the area that has two full bars and a restaurant inside the complex.

It's almost as good as home theater. Accept that the restrooms are further away.

I hardly ever go to the movies. I always wait until it comes out on DVD. Then I can relax at home in my Lazy Boy rather than walking through sticky aisles, smelly seats and screaming kids. The food is much cheaper AND better at home and I can have a beer with my movie.

Reminds me of a demographic report I saw somewhere recently, that boiled down to music/movie purchases now being a form of brand validation. Basically, there might be a ton of file sharing, but it's increasingly for things the listener/viewer otherwise wouldn't give a shit about. If they like the artist/actor/project, they purchase it to say "I support this. . . "

Really there's so many options for our entertainment minutes in the day, that even absent file sharing, schlock would be seeing decreased revenues.

I know I've become very selective in my purchases. I guess my Netflix subscription counts as a base purchase rate for DVDs, but CDs and movies out, have to compete with whatever's streamingfrom/DVRed on my 250 channels of HDTV, 150 some-odd channels of Siruis, youtube, AM/FM, Net Radio, etc., etc.

Actually, the reverse will happen. Instead of big budget "blockbusters" every summer, you'll see smaller "art house" films (actually, that's already happening).

That's cool if that's your thing but those films don't generally have mass appeal.

Yeah, they "did" it. They proved that to make money, you need a record label. They also proved that people don't value music, regardless of whether or not they're a true fan.

They proved that money doesn't have to be the driving factor in making good music. They also proved that people don't over-value music to the ridiculous extent that the industry has been getting by with for some time now.

Actually, the reverse will happen. Instead of big budget "blockbusters" every summer, you'll see smaller "art house" films (actually, that's already happening).

That's cool if that's your thing but those films don't generally have mass appeal.

I think it's a wonderful trend, and I hope it continues. I personally appreciate a smaller "art house" film for it's unique nature. Mass appeal is part of the problem if you asked me. Studios are so intent on making a movie that appeals to the most possible people that we're left with stupid unoriginal rehashes that are targeted to the lowest intelligence level possible. **** mass appeal.

If they'd stop paying some douchebag $20 million to star in the things, maybe they wouldn't seed quite as much "mass appeal".

The theater here can show 12 films at once. Maybe the studios should focus more on filling those 12 spots with a little variety.

I'm sorry but this just isn't true. They offered a reduced bit-rate download, allowing people to pay any price they felt comfortable with paying. 62% paid nothing. Regardless of the cost involved in producing the record, regardless of the time and effort put forth to compose and produce the record and regardless of the cost to host the downloadable files, an overwhelming majority of people felt that the music was worthless.

WORTHLESS.

They weren't compelled to pay the artist for their work. I think that says more about the value of music and this generation's feeling of entitlement than any statement about the music industry.

To me, that's very, very sad.

Additionally, Radiohead is in negotiations to sign a worldwide record deal and their box set for this CD will cost $82.00. Not $19.99 or $17.99 or $14.99. $82.00.

Keep in mind that these "Art House" films are being created and funded by the major studios. Believe it or not, there are people in the industry to understand where the movie business is headed and have seen the future.

Someone post the photoshop of his wife as ET in Elliot's basket. That'll bring him out of the woodwork.

hey Dane. I respect struggling to get where you're going. With Music and Movies, actors and musicians say its "about the art".....usually. Keep that in mind, when some kid who likes your music, but is living in a roach infested shithole, living off of peasants wages downloads your music.

He/she's a college student, working for minimum wage, eating Top Ramen again.....and the RIAA just sent them a bill for $18million dollars because they like pre-British Accent Madonna too much.

You said it wouldn't affect the workers just the high priced stars. That's ignorant because you have no idea what the **** you're talking about.

Problem?

Nope. No problem. Thanks for stating your opinion, because you sure as hell provided no substance to back it up. How about some facts to the contrary? What is this? I'm rubber and you're glue?

That's a shitload of unfounded extrapolations.
The offering was at a lower bitrate than any of the other stuff they'd released online.
Their use of esoteric instrumentation and electronica draws in a 'higher fidelity' segment as part of their fanbase, which is counter to low bitrate crapola.
They didn't mention the bitrate until the DLs started.
Their PR people were initially touting it as a new business model or Gen-Z+ innovation, then when the DLs started and the bitrate came to light, their tune changed to it being a preview "and remember!! the actual CD comes out . . . !!!"
I'm a radiohead fan from their first album. MoF, for me, they are the sine qua non of the 'brand preference purchase' I mentioned earlier. But this is the first album of theirs I haven't bought. Might buy it yet, but I'll certainly preview it for free and make sure I like it first.

I began playing guitar when I was four. I LOVED music my whole life. My dad played music and is in the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. I listened to the radio constantly while growing up. My uncle owned a recording studio and introduced me to music that my father didn't.

As I grew older, I began to mow yards, shovel snow, wash dishes and sack groceries. During that time, I bought guitars, amps and PA systems. I played grade school, junior high and high school dances and parties.

As a kid, no one loved music more than I did. Where did I get my music? At record stores!

Seventh Heaven, Tiger's Records and Peaches. I worked and saved my money so I could buy the latest Rush, Ozzy, Black Sabbath and Rainbow albums. No one gave them to me for free. No one stole music and then gave it to me. I worked as a teenager and PURCHASED my own records (trust me, my parents had 3 other children to provide for - buying me a guitar and amp, let alone records was impossible).

Music is something that should NOT be "free". The expense of developing, recording, producing, mastering and promoting a band is astronomical. The "Artist" doesn't receive any royalties until those expenses are paid back to the record company.

Movies cost even more and the expenses are absolutely outrageous. While a great low-budget movie comes along every blue moon, most cost in the tens of millions if not a hundred million to make. It's a gamble for the studio.

I don't and will never understand while people feel "entitled" to free movies and music.

Never.

Here's what we can do. Import advertising into the files and go hit up Tide, Jif peanut butter, etc. for your money. I'm sure they'll be sympathetic.

Bob Dole still has the remains of a Peaches t-shirt he stole in 1979. Does that count for anything?

Dane, you do realize that when you bought albums at Peaches, Tiger's (not sure about 7th Heaven) you were buying second sell product that the music industry made no money off of (you just took the risk of slightly lower quality). Hell I used to buy music there as well and it was because the albums were about 1/2 price vs. full retail. So in the strictest sense I suppose we were stealing from the Artists and Music industry as well.

Fire Me Boy always seemed like a good guy. I wish him well and hope he returns.

I never watch movies I haven't paid for, though I might if I knew how.

I always heard that the records at Tigers had fallen off the back of a truck.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure about that. The Peaches that I knew had brand new releases and I knew the A&D people from the record labels that actually stocked the shelves. If they were sold at a reduced rate, the artists and songwriters would still be paid (albeit at a reduced rate.

Tigers, I have no idea. I heard years later (after my early teens) that his store was front for "friends of ours". I don't know if there's any truth to that or not. But the bottom line was that I was going to a retail store to purchase music with my hard earned, minimum wage earned dollars.

I wasn't stealing it.

Really? Did you read the story in USA Today?

http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2007-11-06-radiohead_N.htm?csp=34

How many industry VP's have YOU spoken to in the past few weeks regarding Radiohead's strategy?

Time will only tell but I don't think that many people will "re-buy" the record at a higher bit-rate.

Additionally, you're fooling yourself if you believe that's there's NOT a generation of people that feel that music should be free. Otherwise, this wouldn't be a hot-bed issue.

I actually just took him to my ignore list. And since Redrum's contribution to the BB has apparently been to reduced to nothing but hateful, sniping and stupid PMs, one of the mods has maxed out his negative rep, so they won't impact anybody.

My association with Redrum is over. Funny how he went from sniping troll to solid member back to sniping troll.

And if you're reading this, Redrum, happy trails, cocksucker. Be sure to leave me a bunch of shitty PMs that I'll never see. nlm
