Doctors at Mackay Base Hospital in Australia saved the life of a 24-year-old Italian tourist in August after he had ingested a large amount of poisonous ethylene glycol (found in antifreeze), perhaps in an attempted suicide. The antidote, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, was in short supply at the hospital, but doctors improvised by setting up a gastric drip and feeding him vodka at the rate of three standard drinks an hour for three days. A friends wife worked a a nurse at a local hospital. He told a story of some guy who got drunk on vodka and decided to kill himself. The idiot drank a bunch of anti-freeze. He probably would have accomplished his goal except for one problem. He continued to drink vodka, a lot of it, thinking alcohol poisoning would would make doublely sure he died.ROFL The dipsquat succeeded in saving his own life. However, he still had to go through the extremely painful process of recovering completely from the anti-freeze poisoning.ROFL

Sister in law is a pharmacist. The hospital she works for had a case like this come in. They didn't have the anticdote on hand so the head pharmacist sent someone out for several bottles of vodka which did the trick.

What is amazing is that someone could take in 3 drinks an hour for 3 days without dieing from alcohol poisoning.
