Chiefs sign Carney to replace Rayner

2007-11-27 12:07

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday signed free agent placekicker John Carney to replace the inconsistent Dave Rayner.

During a 20-year NFL career, Carney has played in 269 games with Tampa Bay, the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego, New Orleans and Jacksonville.

He appeared in eight games this season with the Jaguars, filling in for an injured Josh Scobee, and was 9-of-11 on field goals.

I posted it in the Rayner thread as well.

Cameron will bump that 5th to a 3rd if his winless Dolphins can play the Chiefs before the season is over

This is absolutely assinine and reaks of desperation. If Rayner is the guy, you let him attempt the kick to tie the game. Remember, Herm ,when Adam V. missed some against us, too? Our team is in shambles and wreckless moves likes this are short-sighted and why we will never get anywhere.

Herman gets mad when he can't rely on getting field goals for his
juggernaut offense. Your post is very accurate imo.

Herm's philosophy was to keep it close and let the defense keep us competing. So having a dependable kicker should have been a priority last offseason I would think?
Question is, what kind of depth does Carney have with kickoffs? Will the opposing teams be catching the ball on the 20 yard line? Years ago didn't we have 3 kickers on the team, carrying a kickoff specialist?

Ill bet hes alot more consistent that Rayner. Hes probably pretty good from 35-45 yards (ala Morten Anderson)

Not that it really matters much anymore. (too little, too late...)

What's funny about this post is that "Carney" is misspelled in the thread title despite it being spelled correctly three times in the story that was posted.

This post is misleading. I thought you meant to say Kearney as in the high school football team. I was excited that we might actually play better sunday...

Agreed, BCF. The season is shot; why not call Medlock back up and let him develop?

The Chargers will be starting at the 40 every time the Chiefs kick off on Sunday (which might be once).

Not that it matters, but when did Carney play for the Los Angeles Rams?

I'm pretty sure that he never played for them.

Thats weird cause he started with us in 1990, he must have been with them in the preseason.

yeah, they have no details to that. I'm assuming he maybe kicked one or two field goals with the rams, got the medlock treatment, and went to the chargers. I recall him being a charger very well in my mind's eye.
