Its All About Next Year, Boys
Huard haters will try to hang this loss on the vet QB, but he got as much life out of this anemic offense as was available. KC receivers dropped at least 5 passes, including 2 in the EZ. Chiefs QBs were dropped for sacks EIGHT times today.
This puts an exclamation point behind the sentence we have pretty much been delaying all year – this is a bad team with an awful offense and lot of young, (hopefully promising) players.
General observations: McGraw and Thomas looked utterly lost in relief of Donnie Edwards and Greg Wesley. Without Edwards, LT exposed the Cover 2 as Cover Who? Kolby Smith’s performance last week was no fluke. With a real OL, he will put heat on LJ to pick up the pace next season. Tyler Thigpen impressed me. Then again, I wanted David Terrell to win the starting QB job in camp. Will Svitek is to OLT what I am to slam-dunking basketballs. Ladanian Tomlinson flat out rocks. The good:
Tony Gonzales is far and away the best TE in football. 10 grabs for 140 yards spells excellent on a weapons-laden team; he did it with only one other credible threat on the field and beat double teams all day.
The bad:
Chiefs’ D looked a lot like the 2004 D today. SD backs rolled up 191 yards on 32 attempts for a 6 yards-per-pop average. The Chiefs’ O averaged 3.7 yards per play.
The ugly:
Kansas City has won just 2 out of 7 in the NFL’s best home field advantage venue. First 5 game losing streak in 27 years. And to drive the humiliation home even deeper, Norv Turner gets his first win at Arrowhead.
Its time to play the younger players now. The 2008 preseason begins next Sunday for the 4-8 Kansas City Chiefs.
