View Full Version : Should coaches be allowed to call a TO in the NFL?

We were discussing this Sunday. I believe there are 11 guys on the field capable of calling a TO. I don't like this. I think if the coach wants a TO he has to tell a player to call it.

Thoughts?

Considering the way the coaches are using them? No.

I agree. I equate it to being a 12th player and I don't like it.

The coach already calls the plays from the sideline... what is the difference if he calls a time out as well?

What is the difference between him calling it and him yelling at a player to call it? 2 seconds?

It just cuts out the middle man. It is, after all, the coaches job to RUN the game while players play it, no?

Does not bother me either way though.

I don't have a problem with it. It's just "cutting out the middleman", IMO.

Absolutely NOT! The refs have enough to worry about.

Yes 2 seconds. In the game of football that is a kick or no-kick.

no ... this isn't freakin college, the players on the field need to know what's going on.

it will put a slow down on that last minute kick timeout too.

If coaches were not using them in a way that completely screws up the game, i would have no problem with them calling the TOs the way they were meant to be called.

Coaches are abusing them and the refs are letting them get away with it.

The problem I have with it is that there isn't a ref assigned to watch the coach, so there's no good way to tell if the TO was called before or after the snap. I've seen a few TOs this year that were granted and shouldn't have been.

If it were up to me I'd go back to the days where QB's called their own plays. So my answer is no.
