Gonzalez, Allen named to Pro Bowl
By KENT BABB
The Kansas City Star

Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen and tight end Tony Gonzalez were named today to this year's Pro Bowl. It will be Allen's first appearance on the roster and Gonzalez's ninth consecutive appearance.

"For Tony to keep a streak like that, that's hard to do in today's NFL," coach Herm Edwards said.

Gonzalez has made the Pro Bowl in all but two of his 11 seasons, all of which have been with the Chiefs. He has a team-high 82 catches for 971 yards and five touchdowns.

Edwards said he also is impressed with Allen's selection. The fourth-year end from Idaho State was a fourth-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He is tied for sixth in the NFL this season with 11.5 sacks.

"He came in here and made himself a Pro Bowl player," Edwards said. "I don't even think he was on the ballot last year. With this year, not even having a real good record this year and not winning a lot of games, I think his play kind of demonstrates who he is and sets him apart."

It is, however, the fewest number of Chiefs to make the Pro Bowl since guard Will Shields was the team's only representative in 1998.

Don't worry. There's still the 9 other Chiefs who they just didn't write an article about.

why? I agree, he's awesome...but our team sucked and his numbers weren't stand-out whatsoever...and it's not like anyone watches our abysmal team...shit, CBS won't even put us on TV...

It's going to take a playoff caliber team for him to get any exposure...and it didn't help that our defense fell apart after the first half of the season.

DJ and Allen ended up being the only two players that were worth a damn.

yup

there are lots of young LBs with better #s:

Hawk
Demeco Ryans
Williams
E.J. henderson
Greenway
Dansby
Tatupu
etc...

I thought he would be better at this point, for sure. He really isn't even close to deserving a pro bowl...

Lechler is overrated. Check out his NET punting average sometime. He punts it a long ways, but teams consistently get healthy returns on his kicks.

At this point Carl is probably hoping he will get fired. Jared Allen is going to assrape him in a way he can't imagine. Carl is probably actually happy that he's no longer leading the league in sacks.

i agree, he shows up here and there but he is not in on ever play. I want a LB that just blows it up and is around the ball almost every play. He has nice plays here and there but he needs to get better.

I like the way DJ chops players down. It is like his signature move. I havne't seen anyone else just chop a player down every time with no more yards. That maybe why he whiffs sometimes too i guess

I know it doesn't fit the youth movement but T-Rich is a free agent this year and I wish we'd bring him back and let him retire as a Chief. He'd solve our FB problem. We can draft one in the laste rounds as well.

Glad to see Allen make it, but I thought players who serve a suspension in a given year aren't eligible for the Pro Bowl that year.

Take a look at this excerpt from a recent Peter King article:

Miami defensive end Jason Taylor, the most outspoken anti-Merriman voice last year, wound up winning the DPOY award handily. But in response to the out-cry over Merriman, the NFL changed its policies and barred any player from making a Pro Bowl appearance in the same season in which he served a league suspension.

Uh I said he was going to make it.......Now it takes more than 1 pro bowl appearance to be a top 4-5 player at your position...

And now don't take that like I said he sucks, seems people enjoy doing that.

Yes and when I do that list......I've generally put Schobel, Kampman and Allen right together, Mario Williams has moved into that list now also..

There's really no shame in being compared to Aaron Schobel he's getting older now so he's to start declining. But in his hey day he was never a top 3 guy at his position but he made the pro bowl a few times and had some 15 sack years and is/was a damn good player.

Well I guess that would depend if they were like these past 2 games. I don't have any issue with Allen other than he needs to be a little more consistent.
