You either love it or hate it.

What's your favorite part?

"Thanks a lot" - Dad, when wife drops bowling ball on lap.

"well look at that, a blue ball". Dad, when opening the bowling ball present.

Gotta love it!

One part of the movie that reminded me of my mom, was after Ralphie got done with the soap his mom said "go in your room lights off, and I better not finding you reading comic books". Then he obviously scowled at her, and she said "Dont you give me that look, your gonna get it". LMAO Thats my mom to a T.

the Dad in Christmas Story reminds me so much of my dad. Growing up my dad was always fixing stuff in the house, on the cars (AMC Hornet, and a few 1971 Cutlasses....seemed like we always had Cutlasses! My first car was a 442 lol).

my dad was remodeling/fixing up an old narly bathroom in the basement - I hear him sawing (yes...sawing...as in handsaw ) into the wall etc...then I hear him yelll "Aaaaaaa". I go down there (I'm probably 8) and he's 'taking a knee' on the floor etc, I ask him what happened and he said he cut into a power line lol. he shut off the power to the bathroom etc, but apparently the way the wiring was run for the other parts of the house, som 220 lines headed to the stove upstairs were still live. lol.

there are so many other stories of my dad cheating death...

my old man was fluent in obscenities too.

This is a great film. How do you measure a great film? By how many times its lines are quoted in real life. There are dozens of quotes from this film that everyone knows, even small snippets. If you're wearing a big puffy winter coat and you stick your arms straight out and loudly whine, "I can't put my arms down!", they know what you're talking about. "Fra-gee-lay", "oh fudge", "you'll shoot your eye out", "I want a Red Ryder BB gun", etc.,. Classic.

I just recently discovered that the film's narrator is the author of the book that inspired the movie. Apparently there is a podcast of Jean Shepherd reading his book "In God We Trust (all others pay cash)" while he was a Cincinnati radio personality.

If you love the movie you'll love his storytelling.

The book this movie was largely based on is called In God We Trust, all Others Must Pay Cash. Also there is a little known sequel called either It Runs In the Family or My Summer Story. Though about the only actor from A Christmas Story is the teacher. Its still narrated by Jean Shepherd.

A Summer Story was possibly the worst sequel in the history of movies, and that's saying something. Charles Grodin as the Old Man and Macaulay Culkin's less-charming kid brother as Ralphie is irredeemable.

One scene that always makes me laugh is when the guy brings in the crate with the lamp. The lamp crate has a huge arrow that points up and a huge "This side up" printed on the side.

He sets it up right and pauses then lays it down on its side. It's subtle but very funny how they set it up the scene.

p.s. Darren McGavin was a god amongst men.

Version 1 has the "fa-ra-ra" scene cut out because some red Chinese commies found it offensive.

Version 2 is not cut.

Is that what they did, depending on the station?

I think it's a classic. Great performances, great "slice of life" story that I think a lot of people can identify with, very funny and endlessly quotable dialog.

My top 8 family Christmas flicks:

It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Scrooge (1951)
A Christmas Story (1983)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966)
Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
A Christmas Carol (1984)
Joulutarina (2007)
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

The narrator is Jean Shepherd. He was a radio raconteur whose stories were the basis for the movie.

And, yes, Darren McGavin was perfect as the dad.

The director, Bob Clark, had a really odd career.

each year when I open a random gift from a random relative etc, my wife will look at me and can tell I'm thinking ".....a can of Simonize" while I pretend to be excited about it; just like the Dad in a Christmas Story.

"Stay away from that Turkey...it's got another hour to cook. You'll get worms" is also another line my wife will randomly say when she's in the middle of cooking something and I'm picking at it.

The Old Man's recation to the dogs stealing his much anticipated turkey;; he was so pisssed, he could barely talk. LMAO

The old man has a ton of subtle facial expressions that are just awesome.

Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie, has gone on to be a producer in Hollywood with a lot of credits to his name. He doesn't act much but he has an uncredited role as the elf Ming Ming in the movie Elf with Will Farrel. Ming Ming is the 'supervisor elf' in this scene:

Certainly doesn't look like Ralphie anymore.

Anyway, just a bit of trivia.
