Fairly good resolve in combination with the principle of the matter.

I said I was going to go and I did. I also said from the beginning (told Phil on the phone that day) that I'd likely be back, I just needed some time away.

What people don't understand is that I was less upset by the pirating that was going on than I was by the complete lack of respect with which I was met. And it permeated threads following the American Gangster thread.

Hey, if you are looking for another 89 posts tonight perhaps you can give us your interpretation(s) of No Country for Old Men.
SPOILERS!!!

I loved that movie. I said in another thread that I think with every film the Coen Bros. further solidify themselves as two of the great filmmakers of our time, in the lines of Ford, Hitchcock and Kubrick.

I'd go as far as to call No Country the best film the Coens have done, topping Miller's Crossing and even Blood Simple. This film, upon a singular viewing, is nearly perfect.

And I haven't seen a scene as exciting to me as Anton's murder of the cop (where he strangled him inside the jail, leaving boot marks on the floor)... since Torn Curtain, when Hitchcock decided to show what it really would be like to kill someone, the struggle that would be involved.

Overall, I think the movie is a comment on the state of man. Chigurh personifies what we fear, what destroys us, whatever that may be, while Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is us, complete with a choice over whether we will be a part of it. At the end, he chooses not to be.

yeah, I loved the film- even if I wasn't sure exactly what to take from it. I think it is open to multiple interpretations, which is, in part, what makes it great.

It is interesting that you mention choice because it seemed to me that relatively few characters in the film had choice and that most were subject to chance and/ or fate.

Chigurh is one of the most willful, purposeful characters (he's a bit like the Terminator, isn't he?) and even he operates on chance and/ or fate from time to time. In fact, without sitting down to count them I would guess that Chigurh leave more to chance and fate than (anti-)hero, who is repeatedly presented with options and decisions (and generally chooses the wrong option which leads to his early exit from the film).

Chigurh sees himself as a tool for fate. It's not a decision for him. What happens is whatever the coin says.

Chigurh sees himself as a tool for fate. It's not a decision for him. What happens is whatever the coin says.
Acting as an agent of fate makes sense although I don't think all his actions were based on the coin toss. We certainly didn't see him flipping coins to determine what to do with Harrelson or Brolin (although I guess one could argue that their fates were determined by their own actions and that in those cases a coin toss was unnecessary).
