[Story (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22578679/) ‘Meanest mom’ sells car after finding liquor
Iowa woman shares teen son’s misdeed with the world via newspaper ad
The Associated Press
updated 7:52 p.m. ET, Wed., Jan. 9, 2008
DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."

After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone — by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.

"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"

The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.

Hambleton said she believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week — just for the feedback.

Definitely have used that excuse a few times. Pretty much nothing believable you can say in that situation

My parents found a pipe in my car one time. I claimed it was a friends also, and that was the truth. But that doesn't mean that I didn't use it too.

Same here. One of my old dumb-ass friends made a pipe out of an Altoids Mint can and left it under my passenger seat. My step-dad found it one day while he was working on my car.

If I'm the mom, (kudos to her by the way) I'd simply ask "If it's not yours, then whose is it?" Might as well open a can on his buddy too...

My dad threatened to take my car away, but I think he realized he'd have to drive my ass to school/work etc., and it was a 1992 Chevy Corsica with 180K. It wasn't going to totally devastate my world to lose it.

I have a similar story. My sister and her husband came down for Christmas and he had a kick *ss gamer computer. Quad core processor, 3 GB RAM, SLI video. both video cards had dual dvi output, I dont remember what else, but about a $2500 computer. Anyway, he had stopped in at a computer store to buy a component and this guy comes in with the machine, wants to sell it because he had caught his teenage son viewing porn on it. My brother in law bought it for $650. Poor kid. I bet that ruined his Christmas.

Some guy in Australia bought it.

The Son is 19 year years old.

If he's so pissed about being punished for irresponsible behavior(of which I was just as guilty at that age), he can figure out a way to become a responsible adult, live in his own house, make his own rules.....and buy his own car. You're 19 years old, and your mother is still buying your cars?

Good for her. My favorite part is that she continues the pOwnage for another week, even though the car is sold.

My parents bought me a car when I was teen. Inside were the keys and an atlas of every state in the U.S. Dad handed me the keys, patted me on the back and said, "Good luck, and don't ever come back."

I've thought before that I'd probably do that if I found out my kids were drinking and driving. I'd get up in the morning while they're sleeping it off and sell the car to a dealer. Then I'd buy myself something nice, come home and wake them up and show it to them.

Wasn't there a thread about the Dad that sold his son's Guitar Hero 3 setup for a grand on Ebay because he was caught smoking pot with his friends?

People do such dumb shit. Why put this out there for others to see? Punish the kid, fine. Momma just wanted to prove her point. What kid doesn't try to drink and shit? Ground him for awhile, but why sell the car? It is not like he killed somebody. There might be a little more to this story.

His problem. He's nineteen and living at home, not to mention that mommy bought the car for him. If you choose to live off of someone else, you have to live by their rules.

It sounds to me like she just loves the attention. She probably hasnt had a dick in her for years.

True, true.....and what do you know, a principle we both actually agree on.
