West Virginia's Schmitt To Play In Under Armour Senior Bowl

Hard-nosed Mountaineer legend who has broken ten facemasks during his career, will display outstanding running, pass catching and blocking skills in North team backfield during January 26 contest.

MOBILE, Ala. (January 16, 2008) -- The North team backfield in the 2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl will feature one of the nation’s most intriguing NFL draft prospects at running back – West Virginia’s Owen Schmitt – bowl officials announced on Thursday.

Schmitt developed into a Mountaineer legend during his storied career, known as much for his outstanding blocking, pass catching and running skills for West Virginia’s high-powered offense, as for his hard-nosed play which resulted in his breaking of ten facemasks during his career.

A former walk-on who transferred to West Virginia from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Schmitt started 21 games for the Mountaineers – ten at tailback, seven at fullback and four at tight end – during his carrer.

A respected team leader who was named a permanent captain, he rushed for 272 yards and four TD’s in 2007, averaging 5.8 yards per carry, and caught 12 passes for 121 yards and another score.

The 6-3, 260-pounder from Fairfax, Va., collected 64 yards on just three carries in West Virginia’s Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma, including a career-high 57-yarder for a touchdown.

A warrior in the weight room, he put up unbelievable numbers including a 525- pound hang clean and a 640-pound squat.

As a junior in 2006, he rushed for 351 yards and seven TD’s, topped by a 109-yard rushing performance against Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl, and finished his West Virginia career with 1,003 yards rushing, 13 TD’s, and caught 32 passes for 288 yards and two more scores.

A excellent student who has already graduated with his bachelor’s degree, he was also a second-team All-Big East selection as an all-purpose back this season.

The 59th annual Under Armour Senior Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, January 26, 2008.

If this thread turns into how a FB is a really important position...

I'd like to take him in the middle rounds. Mostly, I thought it was interesting he played at River Falls. I did not know that until now.

If we draft a FB in the 1st round Carl/Herm/Gailey should be fired on the spot.

How many of you read the "article" in ESPN The Mag a year or so back about him... but it was done comic book style.
Pretty cool story.

I doubt that.

Keep in mind that the NFL made a few changes this year.

The draft will start later in the afternoon and only R1 and R2 will be completed on Saturday. R3-R7 will be completed on Sunday.

Using a R4 on a FB is crazy enough, but using a R3 is flat out certifiable.

True, forgot about that. I just think that he is very versatile and could be used in more ways than just FB. I would love to pick him up with a 6th rounder but he will be gone by then.

Using a 3rd rounder on a guy that could be a pro bowl caliber player at his position is silly. It's best to draft the next Tank Tyler or Snoop Minnis.

Fullbacks aren't an important position, and I'd rather take a chance on any DL, OL, or DB position than a fullback in the 3rd round.

He's a FULLBACK. Who gives a flying f*ck what this guy does. It's an antiquated position. We can find some meathead to slam their head into a defender at NFL chop shops all over the place. You'd have to be a f*cktard to draft a goddamned fullback (Sorry Parcells/Dimension)

I don't really get the buzz about Schmitt either. Sure, he's a solid fullback..he had a good bowl game. He cried after the game, so I'm sure the DV fanclub liked him, but he's still a fullback.

It's a good thing James Laurinitis didn't declare. He had an average bowl game. I'm sure there would be some folks advocating drafting Schmitt over Laurinitis...

"Fullback talent like this only comes around once a decade, who needs a LB??"
