TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

The site is definitely worth checking out as they have HOURS of archived video speeches.

some guy who is dealing with http://openarchitecturenetwork.org/ isn't able to make the conference, so they asked TED if they could put the ticket up for auction for charity for OAN.

Wow, that's freakin' expensive. But worth it. I've watched some of those TED talks and they're infinitely interesting. I especially recommend the Ze Frank one.
