Wanna see some pics? I just started the process last weekend by removing the garage door, framing the exterior wall, sheathing, siding, paint etc..

So this week I started the wiring and today I finished it (almost) Tomorrow I get to insulate, I hate that stuff..

I'll attach a few pics in the next post. suggestions, ideas welcome.

I could only make the room 9' wide which is narrower than i would have liked, the ceilings in my garage are 12' high so it 's going to look a little strange until I drop the ceiling.

I furred out the back wall and I still need to rough in the gas (for a free standing fireplace) you can see the stacks of batt insulation. woo hoo! tomorrow is going to be fun playing with that stuff..:shake:

From what I can see here, at this point you have a garage that doesn't work for storing automobiles.

Show me a working sports lodge.

Great job on lowering the value of your house!

For sound quality with surround system. lowering the ceiling may not be the best for the room. Speak to a pro. tall ceilings and different sized room dimension are a plus. Assuming you can still get cars in your garage the new man-cave may work for house value.

Media room? Did you go to work for Nick Athan?

You gave up precious garage space for that? Don't you have a less useful room to do that in, like a laundry room or kitchen?

Looks good to me, Joe. Should be a fun room.

I've done a couple media rooms in basements this year. I enjoy it very much. But they were on a budget. I can't wait to do one the right way, with a fat budget.

That's a small garage...I thought mine was small when I had to renovate mine, partially, to accomodate a design studio.

You would like what a friend of mine is doing in his basement. The company he works for got bought out, and the employees esop plans were bought out. Rather than roll it into an IRA, he is dumping most of it into a media room in his basement. I think he is spending about 50 grand. I personally think he is nuts, but I am looking forward to watching a movie in that basement. He even has figured out the "sweet spot" as he calls it in the center of the room where he gets the best effect and has a captains chair in that spot.

That's a small garage...I thought mine was small when I had to renovate mine, partially, to accomodate a design studio.

The area that i'm taking for the media room is approx 400 sq. ft. I still have two full garage bays plus a shop approx 800 sq.ft.

I have two boys age 14 and 16 and I NEED to get them a place to hang.. Keep them out of my main living area.. :)

I know nobody cares, but just in case here is an update to my media room project.

First pic shows the wall that will be consumed by the TV, center channel speaker and front speakers (I wired all the speaker wire in the wall) I'm still waiting for the window I ordered a month ago thats why there is the empty space there. as you can see I installed the sheetrock last weekend and my taper has first coated the joints.

The 2nd pic looks back from the previous wall and shows the back wall where the gas fireplace will be. I had to leave access to the plumbing on the right so that will eventually get a door and be a closet. the room to the left is going to be a kitchenette, the ceiling looks really low but it's actually about 84" high. it just seems real low because of the 12 foot height everywhere else. the room to the right without a door will eventually be a bathroom (when i want to spend the moola on it) the closed door is the stairway up to the main house.

The 3rd pic just shows what a mess the rest of my garage has become since I started this thing.

4th pic Who wants to volunteer to clean my shop?

5th pic shows the garage area from outside, the media room portion is behind the Tahoe. (Note the light gray squares on the siding, those are sheetmetal squares to temporary repair damage from woodpeckers! :banghead: I have aquired a permit from the state to kill them:evil: however it expires on 3/31/08

Northern flickers are Nightmares I think I've killed all the troublesome ones though..

I should be done with this project in about 3 weeks.

This is the little 9 by 9 room that will be a kitchenette..

Pretty cool project. Never thought about converting garage space for that, makes a lot of sense.

Of course I live in a condo so it'd be more like parking garage theatre seating for 10,000.

Here are the latest pics. Sheetrock is instlled, I hired a taper who did a great job! I just substantially completed the painting. I went with the black ceiling to help conceal the structural beam and a few conduits, pipes etc. i rolled the Behr flat black suede down the wall, laser leveled and taped off a perfectly level line and painted over the wall color (Behr toasted almond).. It came out better than i thought it would, I really like it.

I installed a ceiling fan directly to the ceiling and plugged it into the outlet that used to accomodate my garage door opener Worked out sweet! also it is approx 10.5 feet high so unless you can easily dunk a basketball, you won't be jumping up and disturbing my fan (teenagers)

I still have a lot of trimming out to do, but the carpet is supposed to go in next week so the end is near..

A good buddy of mine showed up last Saturday and gave me a awesome Neon 2005 NFC Champions bud light sign. I have not yet put it on the wall but i am loving it!

so, yeah, thank you chiefsplanet for letting me post this stuff.. :thumb:

I definitely love that fan, it really moves some air with a 5' radius, I have no heat down there yet, but that fan along with a free standing gas fireplace ought to keep it comfy in the winter and cool in the summer.

Heh. Yeah - I don't think he's in any hurry. I've done two basements and a couple other smaller projects in the time he's been on this project. But then, I'm a pro.

The fan collects debris though. Plan on crawling up there often to vacuum that bowl out.

Yeah well , I have a real job too.. Between coaching my kids baseball team and my real job I feel like I'm ahead of schedule. The carpet will take 2 weeks to get here anyway so I'll have plenty of time to finish up the trim by then.

This summer my entire top floor gets remodeled, including the kitchen.. There will be a much greater sense of urgency to finish that on time..

My wifes a trooper tho, so it's all good.

It's easy enough to clean it every time a bulb goes out. (the one drawback for the fan is too weak of light output IMO)

Why don't you guys move to KC? I need quality clients such as yourselves.

BTW, the room is looking good. Well done throughout. Any particular reason you ran that plastic conduit for speak wire? Did you really need it? Most my theaters have been budget jobs so we've usually just ran the speaker wire bare.

Yeah. Fortunately we have augmented lighting around the perimeter of our master so it wasn't a major concern.

The main reason I did that is in case I ever need to change the wire I can easily pull new wire through the conduit.
