Tennessee's Parker To Skip Final Season

Associated Press
February 22, 2008

Candace Parker, the Tennessee All-America forward who made dunking in women's basketball almost commonplace, ended all the speculation.

Parker will skip her final season at Tennessee to play professionally.

"This was the most difficult decision I've ever had to make, but my family and I think this is the best choice for me," Parker said Thursday.

"I've been blessed with great coaches and teammates, an outstanding education and the best women's basketball crowd support in the country. I will miss Tennessee, but I am eager to take this next step in my career."

The redshirt junior will graduate in the spring and plans to play in the Summer Olympics and the WNBA. Parker redshirted her freshman season to recover from a torn knee ligament.

Parker, 6 feet 4, is one of six women to have dunked in the college game.

She led the Lady Vols to their seventh title last season, then won the Wooden Award for national player of the year before playing with the U.S. national team in the summer.

"Candace was ready for the pros two years ago," U.S. team coach Anne Donovan said. "I think it's an exciting day. Tennessee's had her long enough."

They are more manly than the men of the NBA. Bunch of whiners.

What would make her want to leave? The WNBA players don't get paid for playing do they?

They are more manly than the men of the NBA.

That is probably the main reason not wo watch - it's not fun or exciting and maybe she can dunk but she won't be doing it with regularity - which is the main reason most people like to watch Basketball.

Of course I prefer the defensive game myself, Detroit, etc. but still - the WNBA is lousy - no offense to you personally; I'm sure he/she's a fine athlete, just the same though.

The WNBA is better because its more about the fundamentals and has less show-boating.

Who needs entertainment in their sports anyway?

Can't say that I have or wish to for that matter. I do remember the high school girls basketball scores would end up 16-13 or something like that. Sounded really exciting.

The league is a joke.. It is paid for by the NBA, they have never made a profit yet out of the WNBA.. Only reason why most people go is because of the give-aways and free tickets.. The league is a welfare league, and the game is even harder to watch then a bowling tournament.. But at least bowling can stand on its own..

Also the LA team has the first pick in the draft, I'm sure that had something to do with it.

I used to think women's basketball was incredibly boring compared to the NBA, but not anymore. Now I find them to be equally boring. I can't watch 5 minutes of either one.

I don't know what my favorite part is: Out for season with a yeast infection, or the score being 5-2 in the 4th quarter.

I hear she's commanding a 30 haybushel signing bonus. It may be worth it though as I've heard her leadership is a real calming presence in the stables at halftime. I wonder if she'll start her rookie season or come off the stall. I think she would be a great asset for a team looking for some fresh hoofs.

The WNBA has sucked since Lisa Holdsclaw retired. She and Cheryl Leslie were great.
