I'll explain why I'm asking later.

Also, don't hesitate to say something someone else has already posted. I need as many responses as possible.

Funny, that's exactly the statement I didn't think I was going to hear, especially coming from someone in California.

Right now we have a stadium issue here, a $150M plan to build a new ballpark mainly for the CWS, and of course there's a lot of debate on whether it's worth it or not, and I've been questioning how important the CWS is to Omaha. Apparently someone called into one of our local radio shows and made the following statement:

"You don't know what the CWS means to Omaha unless you travel outside of Omaha. People do not know Omaha for the zoo, or its culture, or history, or affordable cost of living, people know Omaha for the CWS"

I just wanted to see if that was even close to being true. I don't think it is.

I just wanted to see if that was even close to being true. I don't think it is.

Well, in fareness, I was born and raised in Hutchinson, KS and my family is historically from the Hays and Topeka areas, but I haven't lived there in 13 years. That being said, I've never even known of the Omaha zoo (when I think of popular zoos I think of San Diego) and I also think about Creighton - for which I have high regard. But for some reason (answering honestly) I thought of the CWS when I saw your thread.

I hate taxes, and I hate it when communities have to put up big $$ for stadiums, but I really do think having those types of events add a significant value to cities. I wouldn't say it is necessarily something that you can quantify as it seem to be somewhat of an intrinsic value that is the biggest benefit, but having a city name in the news and on highlight shows keeps the city in the conscious mind of people who have no idea what the midwest is like or what it offers.

Not to persuade your position one way or another, but having lived on the left coast for the last decade+, so many people just don't know anything about the midwest and don't consider going there or giving places a shot; the people that do think about it because of events like the CWS and they generally have great things to say about the area if/when they visit - specifically the people.

Sorry for the long post - but it's rare I get to show my midwestern pride. :thumb:

Ha... I can make it to Omaha from KC in 2.5, and that's not driving that fast.

When I was in college, I could drive all day and not have a care in the world. I still like roadtrips, but I'm much more impatient now.. and having a car that doesn't start shaking at 75 helps, too. :)

I worked at the Convention and Visitor's Bureau in KC for a little while, and they would get mail from kids doing projects on their favorite city or whatever... they got one from a 5th grade girl from Phoenix who actually asked if we had electricity and if we rode horses a lot. Twelve years old isn't that young... and from reading message boards and comments from adults on the coasts that think the Midwest is nothing but farms and cowtowns, I wondered if her parents were looking forward to a reply. LMAO

As far as the issue.... I think it's like the Big 12 Tournament before the rotation, or similar event. I don't think it defines the city, and I don't think people outside of the Midwest could tell you where it's played. But, if you moved it, it wouldn't be the same.
