All I can say, is WOW!
Through all of the planning, convincing, and construction, I never thought that this place would be half as cool as it is. I had been to McFaddens and to the arena for a couple of events over the last few months, but last night as we went down to watch the Brigade game and stood around under the giant awning having a few cold ones, it was hard to believe that this was even Kansas City. We paid $5 to park a block from the arena, there are 3 parking lots designated for tailgating but the smell of bbq was in the air, and great to be able to eat or drink right across the street from arena. Maybe most cities are like this, but after being used to the Truman Sports Complex and Kemper for long, this place is unbelievable.

All of the restaraunts have the walls that open up so the street side of the place is open, and the backdoor opens up to the courtyard. We were walking by the new Irish Pub "Raglan Road", and as we were looking in the window this drunk Irishman asked us if we wanted a tour. Most Irish pubs are about as Irish as Chi Chi's is Mexican, but this place is out of control. It is like you are stepping in to some upscale Irish pub from 1910. Every thing is antique and extremely upscale, and everything including tiles, wood, and fixtures are imported from Ireland. The man giving the tour was the top guy working with the developer, and is from Dublin.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the new district yet, you need to. Sports bars, Irish bars, dueling piano bars, bowling, 500 types of beer, in a new, safe, downtown location, was definately worth the wait and the money.

I agree. The power and light district is awesome. We have been going down there every weekend since it's been up and running, and it is a hell of a time.

It ain't nothin' 'til hot young college coeds flash around their bared tah-tahs like they do in the French Quarter of New Orleans and at various southern locales during spring break.

At least KC has alot more than one spot downtown going for it. Outside of the French Quarter, NOLA is a shithole.

Went there last night to watch the Brigade game. Very impressive. This place beats anything Kansas City has had in the past in terms of nightlife potential and a central gathering place. They need to add a story or two to McFadden's, though. Way too packed. (Of course it probably didn't help the situation that the Brigade girls, all 400 of them were headed there following the game, at the same time that the KU/K-State game was about to begin.) Fortunately a few other places are opening up this week in anticipation of the tournament.

McFadden's is a neat place but...the crowd is not really my kind of crowd. There are a lot of doucebags at night. I like going there for lunch personally.

Howl at the Moon was a great place, you should definetly go..

If you can get there before 7 on a friday you wont have a cover charge. i also heard they reserve tables, supposedly...

We got there about 5 on a friday evening and they have a mini snack buffet thing there too. It was a great time and very minimal on the db's.

It is filling a niche...just not one I am personally interested in. I was with a big group of people one night and we were at the Cashew...which I like a lot. We thought we would head down to check out McFadden's there were two different cars taking us, one with guys and one with girls, our car got there first and we got the the run around at the door to stay in the line. This little dude was calling the shots on who went in and out so we stood there while some used up chicks got let in and we were just talking to the guy like... Dude, c'mon this isn't New York. This is a sports bar in Kansas City. The women arrived and they were going to let us but nobody was interested anymore. To the quaff!

Bad thing is that they didn't get a "real" KC BBQ joint down there. People are going to come and eat the BBQ at Famous Dave's or whatever chain got the contract instead of Gates, Byrants, Smokestack etc...

They should have also put an 810 zone down there.

It is pretty expensive to reserve the table but yea it is a fun place overall. When I was talking to them about covering that party and getting that business sorted out I got the feeling that they were going to have some unique angle as a piano bar but it really is a lot like Ernie Biggs, which isn't a bad things. Their entertainers seem to be better IMO at H@TM. Piano bars are fun because you get a wide range of people all together having a good time. Young and old.

Couldn't afford the rent. And ya know, I understand this is sac-relig and all. Arhtur Bryant's is my personal fav but I went to a Dave's about a month ago not wanting to like it because of the whole non KC chain thing but I thought it was good. I thought it was really good...surprised me.

I think Famous Dave's sucks, but if I had a choice of local restaraunts or a bunch of cool restaraunts from around the world, I will take the wider variety.

Personally, I think the only BBQ in KC that would deserve a spot down there would be Smokestacks, (which already has a great place at the freighthouse) or Danny Edwards since he had been there for years. Bryant's is a love/hate place because of their style of sauce, and Gates sucks my balls. Boiled meat that is 60% fat is not BBQ just because it has sauce on it. I would put McDonalds serving McRibs in over Gates.

If I am downtown I don't spend my money on any BBQ other than OK Joes, but then you run into the same arguement about an non-KC style BBQ joint getting moved in.

I thought Famous Daves was good. One word of advice, though. Avoid "Rib Tips". These are basically just ribs chopped into tiny pieces, bone included. Not sure why they even thought to invent such a thing. I was expecting rib meat removed from the bone or something. Instead it's just ten times as messy as regular ribs. Good flavor, though. Just get regular ribs instead.

I had Famous Dave's once. It was alright. I'd rank it below my favorite KC places, but it wasn't crap or anything. I couldn't find a sauce I was very fond of or else it probably would have been pretty darn good.

Howl is a pretty fun place. I've been to the one in Tampa a few times. IIRC it's about $100 to reserve a table for 4. They especially cater to bachelor/bachelorette parties. There's been at least one going on there every time I've been. Always fun with a big group and multiple buckets :D
