I used to pay $12.95 + $2 tip every two weeks. Then I bought a pair of clippers for $40 and started doing it myself. Now I save almost $400 a year, not accounting for the increase in the cost of a haircut over the two years I've been cutting it myself.

I wish I could find a place where I could get a decent haircut for $12.
I used to go to Pestals Barber shop around the corner of 50th and Underwood in my youth and beyond when I lived there. He would let you bring your beer over from the Underwood bar to drink while having your hair cut. Used a straight razor to shave your neck and was really old school and always got a good hair cut. He was a great guy. I read where he finally retired a couple of years ago but don't know if someone is still running the shop or not. Went there last about 4 yrs ago and at the time it was still $8 John Pestal is most likely still missed.

As long as I use a good razor, it's no big deal. Really doesn't take all that long to do it now that I've gotten used to it. When I shave my face, I just shave everything. I shave at night right before I go to bed so I don't have to fart around with it in the morning.

I shave my own head. Or my wife does it for me. If I'm hard up, and don't have time, there's a shop down the street that will shave my head for $6. Pretty cheap up here in the expensive nw.

LMAO $400? Like 4 $100 bills? For a haircut? How much do you pay for soap? $150?

I don't care if I won the lottery I'd just cut my wife's ****ing head clean off at the shoulders after a $400 workover.

I'd pay $400 for the best BJ in the world. For the best beer in the world. I'd pay it for the best movie or meal or massage in the world.

For the best haircut?

The discount is when the senior staff trains experienced assistants. I think they have class once a week.

Frederic Fekkai Beaute de Provence
15 East 57th Street, Suite T1 (the Chanel Building), 212-753-9500
$40 (cash) for cuts or color (cuts regularly $295, color regularly $200+)
Tuesdays beginning at 6:30 PM (call in advance for an appointment)

Not sure when this article was written. Fekkai moved out of Chanel and into his new salon on Fifth Ave. John Sahag died. Orbe's partner had swindled his money away. Nelson who worked for Orbe and is often somewhat of a celebrity himself -- moved to another salon. They jacked his rate high so I was priced out of 'it's not a haircut, it's a piece of art.' And Oscar Blandi charges $700 for a haircut. That's it in a nut shell -- Crazy world!

Heh... Here's a photo of Patrick's and there's Hubert, who highlights my hair... I'm not sure what they're talking about, they're all French.

Holy **** ass! Jesus CHRIST! If my girl spent $400 on a hair cut, I'd smoke her and feed her to the mangey cats. Your a good man brother. Either that or you're rolling in the dough. If that's the case, can you send a check?

I get my haircut for $11. He's not especially good, but the alternative is $18, and I'm not about to pay that for the rediculously easy haircut I get. If the dude wouldn't screw around, he could bust it off in 5-7 minutes. But he does vacuum my head. That's a plus:).
You know how gay that sounds???

OH, and sorry to hear about your grandpa..... Best wishes from my family to yours...

Oh and for me I get my haircut for free, my sister went to cosmetology school and she cuts mine for nada. She does a really good job, and it only takes about 15 minutes, and she has gotten used to what I want so she really just trims it and thins it. When we were kids we used to go to a local guy in town who was old school, and he only charged 6 or 8 bucks I forget but he was pretty good, matter of fact he is still there to this day.

No, I don't tip them. I don't tip the guy who sharpens my lawnmower blade either. I pay the price he has up on the wall.

When did this tipping your barber get started? Guess I've been out of the country too long. Seems to me that's a not "barbershop" thing to do? The manly thing would be for the shop to raise their prices if more money is needed either for the shop or the employee? I hear that rewarding services but where is pride in doing a good job and charging a fair price?

I've not been able to find an "ole fashion" barber shop around here. There is a shop up in old town but it is owned by a woman and most of the barbers are ladies. I'm not concerned about the gender of the cutter but the finished product. Guess I'm dreaming but hoping a male would do a better job. Oh, she just recently went up to $12 and I do tip a couple of $$.

It was nice in the Manila ... for about $5-6 (depending upon exchange rate) I could get a hair cut (with head, neck, shoulder massage), manicure, pedicure (I hate cutting my toe nails). For some reason they no longer have a shoe shine boy in the shops??? Oh, I didn't mind tipping over there coz the workers made little to nothing. But, those days are long gone so, I'll tip along with the crowd.

Im on the "cut my own" wagon. I put a #4 guard on my clippers and go to town. Then I put a #2 on for the sides and back. Ive gotten really good at blending as well. I use the same clippers for my ass and pubes. I do my head first though so I wont have to smell them.

Started going bald in my 20's, I am 44 now. Pretty much used clippers ever since, with the occasional Barber Shop visit for special occasions and a straight shave. Although I am sporting a beard now.

I've had the same Oster Classic 76 Clippers for about a decade, buzz myself weekly.

$31 with tip. I go to a men's Barbershop that serves beer and shots with your haircut, they shave you with a straight edge razor around your neck and sides, put a hot towel on your head, shampoo your hair, trim your eyebrows, trim and clean out hair in your ears, and then when the towel is on your head your get a giant two hand massager that that do on your neck and shoulders for a couple of minutes. Feel great.
