I won't disagree with #2 but I'll bet #1 gets a few music lovers wound up.

That's why I made it a spinoff, just goes to prove that this stuff is all subjective and that everyone has their own opinons....no matter how wrong they may be :D

btw did you check out the Hoey video of Hocus Pocus in the other thread?

i know it's not a popular pick, but this is also not a popularity contest. lukather is one hell of a guitarist, even though he played in Toto

BS. I think this is biased somehow.

If this guy had a play off with Zakk Wylde his guitar strings would pop, and his hair would cath on fire.

I see nothing more than a speed player in this guy, and in that case I don't think he's anywhere near Monty Montgomery.

Angus Young? I guess I missed his sidework, because there is no way he made this list from his 3 chord songs and jr. high solo's he played with ACDC.

I nevr understood the respsect for him. I guess it was all the great songs. There wasn't much to the axe play.

Richie Sambora in 5th place is good. I don't know if anyone else in here has had the chance to hear him live but 20 years ago I took a car load of teeny-boppers to a BonJovi concert and I was really surprised at how good of a guitar player he was.

He went into a solo portion of the concert and I thought then he was about as good of a guitar player as I had heard at that point and I had heard Malmsteen and Angus Young in the same concert that year at Kemper when Malmsteen was opening for ACDC.

I'm tell'n ya that the dude could jam on the guitar. I was thinking at the time that "This guy is way to good to be stuck with BONJOVI".

The dude is good and if you've never had the chance to listen to him live it would be hard to judge IMO.

IMO he is a top 10 guitar player.

Of course I also think Steve Vai should be on that list.

To be a top 10 guitar player, you would have changed the way the instrument is played, IMO. I really don't think Richie Sambora did that or even inspired anyone to pick up a guitar in the first place.

No, I've never been to a Bon Jovi concert. I also don't have to see Poison in concert to know that CC Deville isn't better than Jimmy Page.

Sorry dude you have no cred on this subject.

"Millions of votes for 4 months from over 40 countries"

I've never seen Poison either so I CAN'T give an opinion on CC Deville.

I was asked by a parent friend of my family to drive her daughter and her friends to see Bonjovi so I did.

I would NEVER make the claim I am making about the man had I NOT heard in person what I heard from him in concert. He is held back by Jon Bonjovi cause I gaurantee you don't hear what he is capable of on ANY bonjovi song I have ever heard.

Is my claim an opinion? YES it is.

BUT..... "Millions of votes for 4 months from over 40 countries"

AND.... "No, I've never been to a Bon Jovi concert.

I'm not the one saying Richie Sambora is better than any number of groundbreaking innovators of the instrument. If you think attending a bon jovi concert gives you some kind of perspective on this that anyone would listen to without laughing, good for you. It's still an insane opinion that you're backing up with some website nobody's ever heard of. "Millions of people from 40 countries", shit, are you really that gullible/stupid?

Clapton is one of the most overrated guitar players of all time.
He plays the same memorized blues riffs over and over. He doesn't play with blazing speed, and he doesn't play with any soul. Personally, I think Derrick Trucks, a guitarist that has been touring with Clapton, is much better than Clapton himself.

Maybe if that list was comprised on both skill and influence, but I would have to question how many people have been influenced by Steve Lukather. I have been a subscriber to Guitar World magazine since the early 90's, and wasn't positive who Lukather played for.

no love for classical guitarists again. Let's be honest classical guitarists could probably play rock guitar but not the other way around

Absolutely, unequivocally, untrue.

Rock has a certain feel that is unique unto itself. Much like jazz guitarists. George Benson couldn't just pickup a Les Paul and sit in with Van Halen. It's a totally different style, totally different shapes and fingering but most importantly, a totally different feel.

Add to the fact that a classical guitar neck is shaped entirely different than that of a Strat or a Les Paul, the vocabulary of the two musical genres do not overlap in any way.

Brock is right. I saw Bon Jovi in the 80's twice and was never impressed with Sambora more than I was with Tico Torres' performance.

Brock is right. I saw Bon Jovi in the 80's twice and was never impressed with Sambora more than I was with Tico Torres' performance.

Lets see

I've seen:

Ted Nugent
KK Downing
Glen Tipton
Angus Young
KIRK HAMMETT
Joe Perry
Jake E Lee
Zach Wild
Steve Vai
Adrian Vandenburg
Yngwie Malmsteen
Peter Frampton
Richie Sambora
Joe Walsh
Mick Mars

Groups I've seen and can't remember lead guitarist:

Quiet Riot
Sorpions
Megadeth

I may not be an expert but I have heard some of the BEST and IMO Sambora rates in the top 10.

I don't agree that Bonjovi is a #2 band of all time or even in the top 10.

And if you want my personal favorite that wasn't even listed I have always thought Ted Nugent was the guy no one ever tried to copy.

He may not be the fastest but I have always like Ted's style.
