Panthers WR Jarrett hit with DWI charge

Carolina Panthers receiver Dwayne Jarrett was arrested and charged with driving while impaired while in town for the team's offseason conditioning program.

He was taken to Mecklenburg County jail and released on $1,000 bond.

Jarrett was pulled over in suburban Mint Hill at 3 a.m. Tuesday, police spokesman Lt. Sergio Carrera said. An officer spotted Jarrett's car cross the center line and run a red light, Carrera said. The 21-year-old player failed field sobriety tests before he was given a breath test.

"Our players know these kinds of situations are unacceptable," Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton said. "We have talked to Dwayne and expressed our feelings on this matter and are gathering all the information we can."

Jarrett's agent, Darin Morgan, declined comment.

The Panthers drafted the former Southern California star in the second-round last year. Three days later, the Panthers released Keyshawn Johnson, believing the 6-foot-4 Jarrett would replace him as the No. 2 receiver opposite the smaller and speedy Steve Smith.

But Jarrett struggled to learn the playbook and adapt to the NFL game and was beaten out for a starting job. He was on the inactive list for six of the first eight games. He played more later in the season, but finished with only six catches for 73 yards and no touchdowns.

The Panthers signed veteran receiver Muhsin Muhammad last month. General manager Marty Hurney indicated Muhammad could mentor Jarrett, who holds the Pac-10 career record with 41 touchdown catches.

Damn. 6 catches for 73 yards for the season? Bowe had twice the yards in one game against the Chargers.

Just as long as he doesn't show up at a black-tie dinner wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

Some conspiracy by "the haters" to keep him off the field, no doubt.

heh heh-- well played, sir, well played.

personally, I'd have gone with the classic "Yeah! Right on, man, I feel you!" or, "you're talking to my guy all wrong, it's the wrong tone. you do it again, and I'll stab your face with a soldering iron!"

both great walken quotes

But Jarrett struggled to learn the playbook and adapt to the NFL game and was beaten out for a starting job.He had trouble learning the playbook? WTF did they use at USC?

College playbooks are alot smaller, plus he could generally just out physical guys in college and beat them that way.

I think it's funny I get tied to this when I said he was unpolished and unrefined and needed some work. I think he has great potential but he's also 21 years old and very unpolished.

Hell I said right after the pick that Bowe was safe, he's 23 and much more refined as a player than Jarrett is/was.

Jarretts problem isn't that he's slow it's that he needs coaching and technique like I said he is very unpolished.

I'm just saying that he never should have even seen the field if he didn't know the playbook. WTF were the Carolina coaches thinking?

you can't blame them. they didn't have bo pellini on their coaching staff.

Heh.. Even the maroon formerly known as Callahan didn't play guys if they didn't know WTF they were supposed to do once they got on the field.
But the Carolina coaching staff? Unless Fox is totally hands off of the offense.
Probably something Herm should look into.
