UNC did not look unbeatable today! If Clemson could have made their freethrows down the stretch, they easily could have won the game. If both KU and Texas play like they did today, either one is entirely capable of beating North Carolina.

Georgia is bananas. Hopefully VTech, their coach is really annoying.Greenberg was woefully mediocre at USF. Right before he was going to get fired, he bolted to Virginia Tech. Shortly thereafter, conference realignment happened and he'd somehow managed to be an ACC coach. Still makes me laugh every time I think of it.

All about matchups... I would have taken a #2 in any region last year, but we got a #1 in the West and ended up playing Kentucky (a team about to implode is a dangerous team), SIU, and UCLA.... the last two being some of the most painful basketball I've ever seen. Games that, at the end of BOTH, the first feeling wasn't the excitement of winning or disappointment of losing, but "HOLY SH*T, I'm glad that clusterf*** is over!"

I'll take a 1 or 2 in Detroit or Houston. It'll probably be Tennessee and Kansas, and it doesn't matter which is one and which is two.

Fun tidbit I stumbled upon while waiting for this to get underway:

*The Tigers finished with a 2-1 record vs. the RPI top 25 and the 6-1 vs. the RPI top 50. Against the RPI top 100, the Tigers finished a very impressive 15-1. To put those numbers into perspective, the 2006-07 Tigers were just 1-2 vs. the RPI top 25, 1-2 vs. the RPI top 50 and 6-3 vs. the RPI top 100. The current Tigers have a much more impressive resume and are very deserving of at least the second #1 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

South, yay. Guess we get Texas.

Interesting... if we're the last #1, that means we would get Wisconsin in our bracket in Detroit. But that wouldn't make sense, having Memphis playing in Houston vs. Texas.

Thoughts on the East:

- Butler got ****ING HOSED. 29-3, top 12 team, #17 RPI, and they're a 7-seed?!
- Winthrop will beat Wazzu in the 4-13 game.
- UNC didn't really get any favors with Tennessee as the 2 seed.
- OU seems a bit high at #6.

I really like KU's bracket. If we can't go far in this one.........I'll be pissed, I'll just put it that way. If that's how it works out, which it probably will.

So who is everyone's sleeper picks? Cinderella's??

Duke.

I agree, and the only thing Memphis could have done to stay out of the 4th #1 seed was to beat #2 Tennessee and go undefeated; and that's ridiculous.

That's a very hard question this year, because there's not huge depth, IMO, so I'm going to have to hold back on picking too many upsets.

A CBS guy just put all 4 #1s in the FF.

KSU could beat USC, but that's a tough one.
Villanova over Clemson, not because Clemson is bad, but because they're Clemson. ;)
Butler over Tennessee.
Anyone over Notre Dame.
Baylor over Purdue (B12 homer/B11 hater pick)
Vanderbilt over Kansas.... not that I'll pick it, because Vanderbilt is shaky, but they can shoot.

Arizona State should be in over Arizona. Oregon, I guess it's debateable, but I think what really bothers me is that ASU beat Arizona twice, and has a better conference and overall record, and they're out?

Who did Arizona beat in non-con? They played a few good teams but they also lost those games.

Then, they lost to ASU both times and had a losing record in the conference. That last one is a killer for me, I don't think anyone that has a losing conference record deserves to play for a championship.

Get rid of the play in game and go back to 64.I would be fine with expanding to 68 and having Monday/Tuesday serve as an opening round for 8 small conference champions (since their tournaments should be well over by then, anyways), but anything more than that is overkill. It sucks for teams like Illinois State, Dayton, and Arizona State that they got screwed in lieu of worse teams, but it's not like they were going to win the national title anyways.

It's hard to decide on that one, because Vanderbilt was so inconsistent after they beat Tennessee.... and even that victory didn't completely convince me, because I knew Tennessee was going to lose their next game after beating Memphis; it could have been against anyone.

Most, if not all, of my brackets will have Kansas/Vanderbilt.

No, but it makes it more fun. I always like watching a mid-major team beating a major conference team.

That's what makes it fun. The unpredictability of the tournament.

This year was such a mess that we were gonna have an uproar no matter what. Too many teams in a giant cluster. Team A had something better than Team B, which had something over Team C... but Team C had something over Team A for like 20 different teams.

If anything, I'm all for going back to 64 and dropping an at-large team. People complain about team X, team Y, or how the 15-16 seeds aren't worth having in the tourney. But it's not like Villanova is gonna win this thing either. Instead people want to make it more complicated and create arguments over teams 120-128... which would be teams that are probably below .500 in major conferences or 2nd place teams in really poor conferences, that aren't going to win it all.

Make it less complicated, less at-large teams, reward teams for winning their conferences. If you want a guaranteed shot, go do what Georgia did... they just won their tourney in a more difficult situation than just about any team in any conference tourney in history. Force teams to earn their way in, whether it be Illinois State or Syracuse.

Leave it at 65, or even put it back one to 64.

It's not like the BCS where you have to tell a top 10 team that they aren't going to play in a BCS Bowl, and you have to tell a top THREE team that they aren't going to play in the NC game.

You're deciding who's going to have a chance of upsetting a 4 or 5 seed, and maybe making it as far as the Sweet 16.

Until #11+ seeds start regularly making runs in the tournament, there's no reason to open it up to more teams that can lose in the first 2 rounds.

That's what makes it fun. The unpredictability of the tournament. They don't want you to see that anymore, regardless of the size of the tourney. Check out this year's bracket and all of the oh-so-coincidental first round matchups of mid-major teams.

If you want the expanded tournament, your best bet is probably to just watch the new look NIT. There's your first round.

They have a rough go of it to make a run. They will probably win against western kentucky, but after that it gets ugly. Uconn, UCLA, and then Duke to win their region. But, I think Butler goes all the way to the final four, knocking off UNC. KU takes the midwst, UT takes South. West is a tossup, i think it could go a lot of ways.

Agree with all of this. Third year in a row for Memphis. Three years ago, they're the #1 seed and play UCLA in Anaheim to get to the Final Four. Last year as the #2 seed, they play A&M in San Antonio in the Sweet Sixteen. This year it's Texas in Houston. Ridiculous.

Maybe this will finally be the year... but it's so pointless to watch these experts make their picks. It's always the 1 vs 2 seeds, then all the number 1 seeds making the Final Four. It's like they are robots, those might be the best four teams going in but the tournament never turns out that way.

I actually think the #1 team in each region is probably the best team in that bracket this year... but at least 1 or 2 of them is going to lose, somewhere.
