The NFL has stripped the 49ers of their 2008 fifth-round pick after finding the club guilty of tampering with Bears LB Lance Briggs last October.

The Bears and Niners will also switch picks in the third round, giving Chicago the No. 39 selection. San Francisco moves back to No. 44. This is a pretty significant blow to the 49ers' draft and a nice lift for the Bears. Like he has with off-field conduct, it appears commissioner Roger Goodell will crack down on tampering going forward.

I wonder what Bear pick it will be, they pick at 75 and 90? If its the 75th its only a 5 spot jump.

I don't think the numbers add up athough I could be wrong. The 39th and 44th picks would be 2nd round, wouldn't they?

Too bad the niners didn't have to forfeit their first round pick before they traded it to NE. :)

It's no coincidence that Shanahan was once a coach with the 49ers.

I'm not sure I agree with the Bears benefiting from this by a swapping of picks. I agree with the 49ers loosing a pic, but why should the Bears benefit? They kept their player and are out nothing in the long run, but actually benefit from another teams stupidity.

Unless it can be proven the Bears were forced to overpay, etc. for the 49ers conduct I disagree with the Bears receiving compensation for the 49ers mistake.

Geez! They tampered and didn't even get the guy they were tampering for.. :shake:

Sometimes I feel like we are competing against "short bus" riders..

Apparently, you don't remember the AFC West. How quickly they forget. Carl's ineptness runs rampant in these parts.

Too bad it couldn't be their first round pick so NE would get screwed again. heh

I hope the NFL punishes tampering more often. It's RAMPANT.

As Rainman so aptly implied, they must've learned from Shanahan.
