Beyond the details in the story, I don't know much. Unfortunately, I'm not sure anyone ever will at this rate.

I lived the first seven years of my life in this town of less than 100 in the middle-of-nowhere North-Central Kansas. I lived the next 11 eight miles away. Maybe we were stupid, or more accurately naive, but we never felt the need to lock our doors -- car or house.
I graduated high school with his daughter and consider her one of my best friends, knowing her for all my life. He was a father of three and one of the most genuine men I've ever known. I know the family, as well as the small-farming community, could use any prayers or thoughts you have to give.
Sad story with no answers, at this point.
Don't forget to lock your doors; we're officially not safe anywhere anymore.
