Teacher gets probation in sex case

Teresa Engelbach, 22, was sentenced today to pay a $5,000 fine and two years of probation after pleading guilty to having a sexual relationship with a student.

Police said the victim was a 14-year-old boy from the Dunklin School District where she had been a substitute teacher. The victim was friends with Englebach's younger brother. Police do not believe any other victims were involved and none of the incidents took place on school property. Engelbach of Pevely has not taught in the school district since she was charged in March 2007. The crimes took place between February and March 2007.

Engelbach pled guilty Feb. 28 to one felony count of second degree statutory rape and one count of misdemeanor sexual misconduct.

She has not renewed her substitute teaching certificate this year.

Jefferson County Circuit Judge M. Edward Williams sentenced Engelbach today. She left the courtroom without comment, but her attorney Daris Almond Jr. told the judge, "The incidents with the 14-year-old were, "very unique and very specific in that she was having problems with her fiance."

He described the student as someone who gave Engelbach "a shoulder to cry on."


Williams also ordered Engelbach to register as a sex offender and continue counseling. The judge also ordered to reimburse the victim's family for his counseling expenses.

Alot of people think it does, I've seen Lawyers argue that it is different because women aren't "predators" like men and they when they do it aren't doing it for the same reason.
