View Full Version : ChiefsPlanet New Feature - Thread Prefixes

I'm in the process of attempting to implement a new feature for ChiefsPlanet: thread prefixes. You'll notice that you can no longer choose post icons in the Lounge. However, you'll find a "prefix" field before the title for a new thread in which you can pick a "category" for your thread. This will then show up in the Lounge as an icon (or as text for you At Work types).

That part isn't all that exciting, but you'll also notice a new pulldown menu at the bottom of the thread listing in the Lounge that will allow you to pick one of the prefixes. When you do, the only threads you'll see are those in the category you picked. This should be pretty useful for people who are particularly interested in things like the Royals, hockey, or food.

Give it a try, and let me know what you think!

(For the record, I hate stickies, but I figured this was a big enough change that people would want to know about it.)

I think something that you did caused the thread and thread starter partion to get jacked up.

Part of the switchover. It should be fixed now.

Understandable. Just thought I would point it out, but since you mentioned that it's part of the switchover, makes sense to me.

It's fixed now. :)

I love the new CP. You never know what the place is going to look like when you log on. If it ever gets to the point where the thread has a Hello Kitty skin though, I might stop coming back...

No problem. I'm glad you pointed it out - it made me recheck everything a bit and I found that the "Full Featured Sub" style was still screwy. It should be fixed now too, though.

FYI, I think the partitions are messed up because of this under subscriptions in the user cp. Not a big deal but thought you'd want to know.

I'm gonna run through and add prefixes to a bunch of threads so that people can get the idea about how they work. For those of you whose posts get edited, don't hate me.

For the "At Work" users:

Would you rather have the text versions, the icon versions, or nothing displayed for the prefixes?

I would think the icon versions are fine (at least for my work). It makes it obvious you aren't on a "work" site, but not like there's anything inappropriate being shown.

Thanks for the input. I think it looks like crap to have the text versions on there, but I don't want to make it look all crazy if people don't want it to.

Yeah, I agree. We have enough text tot read as it is; I think it would just clutter things up.

I'm hoping that will be possible in the future, but for now, it's unfortunately only a filter.

As you know from the other thread I really like this change DaFace and think it's a great idea (mainly because I was thinking of the same thing :) ). In looking at the prefix options I have 1 question: any plans to put college icons, at least for the primaries around here: KU, MU, KSU?

Either way I think this is a great idea.

If that's the consensus, I wonder if moving the tags to the right of the title would be easier to read. I'll have to think about it.

Is there any way to just completely turn them off in At Work Mode? I'm not saying this is the best idea, but just a thought.

It's certainly a possibility, but I wonder where to draw the line. We've got a fair number of fans from around the Big 12, so I wouldn't want to assume that those are the only three we need. Maybe I'll put it to a poll for which colleges people support and see.

But not today.

Yes, but it would be systematic. There's no way for an individual user to turn them on and off (aside from maybe adblocking each one individually).

By the way, if you guys have any suggestions for categories I missed, please let me know. A few I've considered are:

-Big 12 teams (some or all)
-Kansas City (general issues about the area)
-Birthdays
-Self-improvement

There's also a strong possibility that we may REQUIRE people pick a category in the future so that we can more effectively manage them.

The last two are ones I had planned to add, so umm, make it so.

What if we did some Big 12 teams (and others) and a logo denoting which sport so that it serves double purposes.

For example, which would you pick for the topic: Arthur and Rush to announce draft status.

Would you pick the Jayhawk or the basketball?

so are the sub forums going away then? or are the mods going to move them to the proper forum based upon the prefix?

We may do something about eliminating sub forums in the future, at least some of them.

Just probably don't want to go overboard with it. I would think that a Big 12, Chiefs, NFT, and Royals would be good IMO. Because you will most likely be filtering to find the news on your teams through all the other BS on the board.

I would think that it would have to be mandatory to put it in a category when posting a thread to make it work.

There will always be gray areas, but we don't want to end up with 150 different categories either. We may add a Jayhawk at some point, but I doubt we'll ever have a "Jayhawk basketball" as opposed to a "Jayhawk football."

My general logic is that the most specific category that fits is the right one.

Yeah, we'll probably end up adding at least a couple Big 12 teams soon, and the mandatory option is under consideration.

I've stated before I'm for the mandatory. Based on different seasons there's not a big reason to differentiate college teams by sport, but I do think KU, MU and KSU icons are a good idea. Those are the only ones you really ever see much about here. Anyone who supports another college team would need to show cause for their desired icon.

It's in there.

I do wonder if it's worth it, though. I mean, if we're gonna have Soccer, why don't we have wrestling, boxing, MMA, or whatever.

Maybe an "ESPN" that is a catch-all "other sports" category would be best. :hmmm:
