Looking at maybe getting one of these for my son for an end of the school-year gift. I made a deal that if he kept his grades up I would get him something nice (within reason). He has an older Razr and likes it but wants to upgrade. Anyone know much about these? He is wanting a phone with MP3 capabilities. Thanks.

Any other suggestions for a decent but reliable phone?

I had a Razor (sp?) once and really liked it.

The coolest thing I've seen lately is the touch screen ipod thing, though. If that comes in a phone version, I'd glom onto one of those.

Razrs suck... horrible sound quality.

Samsung makes a good product... very crisp & sharp screens.

Looks like Alltel has the Samsung Hue. It got a 7.3 rating from cnet...

I got a razr right when they first came out and had good luck with it. I had recently upgraded and gave my son my old razr and now it's about had it. Any of the touch screen models are out of my price range for sure...Alltel has one called the glimmer that is pretty slick though.

Looks liek the LG Scoop might be a reliable alternative as well...

I know a lot of people that like Sprints LG Rumor, which looks like the Scoop from alltel. Good if the kid does text messaging...

The Razr2 actually does have a couple touch screen functions, but its only on a small part of the front screen, and only for accessing messages and MP3's. My buddy got one and is very happy. It seems like a great design.

For some reason cnet will not let me embed the glimmer video but it has gotten some GREAT reviews but is up at around $130 (new activation)

I don't know what these guys are all down on the Razr (sp?) phone. I really liked mine. I have a blackberry curve (sp?) now and it's cool except that brickbreaker is really hard at the high levels and I'm embarrassed to send in my high score.

What kind of phone did they use in the Matrix? The one where you pushed a button and it sort of auto-expanded? That would be nice ... if it came in a smaller size and a lifetime supply of red capsules, of course.

I think you could probably work out a deal and get a pretty cool phone somewhere by signing up for a plan.

That LG Shine reminds me of my Motorola Rokr. I have had it for a few months and really like it.

Razr sucks. I had one. It broke within a month, Sprint immediately accused that I had done something with it when I didn't. Faught with them for hours on their GREAT customer service lines. They finally gave me a credit to get a new phone thats not a razr thank god, and I will not be renewing my contract with them when July comes up.

We have the Palm Centro and the Balckberry Pearl in our household, real happy with both.
The Palm OS is real user friendly.

I appreciate the opinions and links but I do want to reiterate something: this thread is asking about the razr 2 , not the original razr, I think a couple of people may have missed that little 2 next to the word razr.

Just give him twenty bucks.

With teenagers THAT is a weekly thing (or more). I bought lil' sis a new camera for making straight A's for the year, he knows he will get more than twenty bucks at this point. I asked him if he would rather have a new cellphone or we could buy him that Rock Band game. I was hoping he would pick the game but he asked for the cellphone instead.
