MU's signature win over the then #2 team in the country to become No.1 for a week is bigger than KU's National Championship. Yeah...

Nov. 24, 2007 What happened?
The oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi River never had a buildup like this. The undefeated Jayhawks were ranked second. Third-ranked Missouri stood 10-1. The largest viewing audience in the history of ESPN’s “College GameDay” pregame program saw Jayhawks colors on one side of the stage and Mizzou colors on the other.
On a chilly evening before the second-largest crowd in stadium history (80,537), the Tigers prevailed 36-28 to win their first North Division championship. Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel was never better, completing 40 of 49 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns.
What it means
Even in the afterglow of a remarkable evening, the schools may not press forward with the series in Kansas City beyond the 2008 game. Traffic, parking and security problems soured many, especially Kansas fans who wondered if their team surrendered a perfect season by surrendering the home field.
On the plus side, both teams dropped $1.3 million into their athletic coffers, and the return should be similar for this year’s game.
2 NCAA championship for Jayhawks April 7, 2008 What happened?
The impossible, that’s what. How it happened was as exhilarating as that it happened. Trailing Memphis 60-51 with 2 minutes, 12 seconds remaining, the Jayhawks staged a rally for the ages — punctuated by Mario Chalmers’ three-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation — and defeated the Tigers in overtime.
As Bill Self continues to say, “Just about everything that could go right for us in the last two minutes did.”
What it means
Everything to the Jayhawks. The school that hired James Naismith in 1898 knows a little about the sport and stands with the nation’s greatest programs. In this exclusive club, only six have won at least three championships: UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, Duke and Kansas.
With the leverage of a ring, Self got a new contract and the promise of improved facilities, including a basketball practice arena.
3 Kansas wins Orange Bowl Jan. 3, 2008 What happened?
Virginia Tech wins with defense, special teams and toughness. Kansas topped the Hokies in all three categories in a 24-21 triumph to win its first major bowl game. All-America cornerback Aqib Talib got things started with an interception return for a touchdown, and it just kept getting better from there for coach Mark Mangino’s squad.
What it means
The 2007 regular season wasn’t a fluke. Sure, the Jayhawks played cupcakes in September and avoided the more difficult South teams. But Kansas blew out nearly every team it faced, then defeated the ACC champion in a historical bowl setting.
4 Mizzou wins Cotton Bowl Jan. 1, 2008 What happened?
Blowout city. The Razorbacks haughtily played their SEC card, and Mizzou trumped it with a 38-7 triumph that stands with the program’s greatest bowl moments. The best running back on the field wasn’t Heisman runner-up Darren McFadden but Missouri’s Tony Temple, who set Cotton Bowl records with 281 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
What it means
The exclamation point of a record-setting season gives Missouri a head of steam heading into the fall. The Tigers not only are preseason favorites to repeat as North champions but to win their first Big 12 championship.
5 Michael Beasley dominates in purple 2007-08 What happened?
Kansas State basketball came alive when Beasley followed his coaching connection, Dalonte Hill, to Kansas State and helped send the Wildcats to their first NCAA Tournament in a dozen years. Beasley turned in one of the greatest freshman seasons of all-time, averaging a Big 12-record 26.2 points and grabbing 12.4 rebounds. He became the Wildcats’ first Big 12 player of the year and the program’s first consensus All-American since Bob Boozer.

****in' Arkansas? Let's beat up the small kid in class everyone!!!Arkansas was a pretty solid team throughout the season. But they never had a QB, and McFadden/Jones just dominated. Then their coach split and McFadden knew he was gonna be getting big time NFL money soon, so I'd say they faced a pretty uninspired team.

Not MU's fault, but they probably didn't beat down an Arkansas team in their finest hour.

It says a lot about how crappy your school's sports history is, when a regular season victory over your top rival is considered by your home-town rag to rate higher than another teams' winning of a National Championship.

Congrats on the Tigger version of a National Championship, Mizzou. The Jayhawk fans will remain quite ecstatic about winning a 5th National title, however. Try it sometime if you can, you'll see how significant the difference really is.

I'm a big KU fan and I could see his reasoning behind it. Think of it this way..

What is more likely to happen over the course of the next 50 years:

1)KU winning another(or multiple) basketball title(s)
or
2)KU MU playing in a national title elimination game in either the last week of the season in football or the rough basketball equivelent in the final four.

Maybe it's just me, but I think 2 is much more rare and unlikely. Sure, the KU title was a big story, but we could win 2 more in the next 10 years. KU MU might never see themselves with that much at stake ever again. That is why I could go along with him saying it was the #1 event.

the only reason why people care about basketball is so they have something else to watch and gamble on before the real sport of football comes back. ^^Post of the day!

For the past 20 years, KU has brought home the only 2 National Titles seen in this area. That's 2 more than the Chiefs, Royals, Tigers and grapes COMBINED. Until these other teams and programs can right their ships, the Star's sports page should be named the "Jayhawk Daily", as Kansas hoops is the only program that routinely achieves any national recognition (at least the type youwould want your team to receive).

Yes, I realize that Mizzou ranks at the top of having felons on their teams, and KSU did recently win the National Soil Judging Contest, but it's really pretty amazing when you consider how pathetic both KSU and MU have been on a national scale - for decades. Try winning (heck sniffing) a Conference title or getting to a Sweet Sixteen, heck get to the NCAA tournament once and a while, then talk all the smack you want. Until then, be happy that KU has shown it can win National Championships, and is good enough to bring the area some recognition on a pretty regular basis.

It's not a huge deal but Football is the true test of who is a man and who are pussies. And KU got their dicks kicked in in the only sport that matters. Put your skirt back on and try not to get piss on yourself squatting

Kerkhoff is a KU homer. I would imagine that he's trying to get the KU fans' collective panties in a bunch so that they whine and cry about how their B-ball title is bigger/better.

Nope. Nobody is whining about anything. No need. Any columnists can write whatever they want. Doesn't make it any less ridiculous. ;)

You can throw out all the arguments you want but National Championship trumps all. At least in the 2 sports that I care about, basketball and football.

It kills me how people on this board try to call out NCAA basketball as a "secondary" sport.

Do you realize the tournament tv ratings surpass bowl games.....or the amount of money spent on bets on tourney games compared to college football games?

Take a look again.

Fox is currently in a 4-year tv contract for BCS games - $320 million

Take a look at CBS's college basketball contract:

March Madness first-round NCAA Tournament bids the committee served up include an interesting matchup between two of the nation’s best freshmen phenoms, O.J. Mayo of the All Pac-10 selection from USC and Michael Beasley of Kansas State.

With a fickle stock market adding more pressure for companies to meet and exceed expectations, does CBS and big media influence the matchups?

CBS Pays Big Money for NCAA Basketball Tournament

CBS Sports agreed yesterday to pay $6 billion to keep the NCAA men's basketball tournament for 11 more years, one week after failing to retain its Nascar rights.

The stunning contract for the three-week tournament, which has had declining ratings, means CBS will pay the N.C.A.A. an average of $545 million a year, or more than 2 1/2 times its current annual fee of $216 million.

''There is no more important event at CBS, not just at CBS Sports, than the men's basketball championship,'' said Sean McManus, president of CBS Sports.

CBS outbid joint efforts mounted by ABC and ESPN and by Fox and Fox Sports Net. The joint Fox bid was estimated at $5.1 billion and the ABC/ESPN offer a bit higher.

In the annals of sports rights payments to leagues or associations, the $545 million annual fee ranks behind only the $2.2 billion paid to the National Football League and the $650 million paid to the National Basketball Association.

Repeat after me, $545 million for the NCAA Tournament contract vs $650 million for the NBA's contract.

The payment by CBS is $45 million more than it spends on average for American Football Conference rights and equal to NBC's payment for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. But it is less than the $750 million average NBC is paying for the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Winter Games.

However, that's what some of us on here will be doing.:D

I thought Chase Daniels got drafted? Are you sure he wasn't a first round pick?No no, that's next year. He's gonna sprout an extra 6 inches through the season, and become the consensus #1 pick. Chase Daniels money clip is gonna make Matt Ryan's bank acount look like pocket change.

Funny thing is, you can find a 1954 MU Baseball National Championship jersey right here (http://tinyurl.com/2q9j9y). I guess they'll sell anything these days.

MU had a fantastic win over the then #2 team in the country, and became for one glorious week the #1 team in the country. KU got lucky and knocked off two number one seeds and slid into a national championship that will soon be forgotten.

Eh. Not by much.

 Your joking, right? What did they each do when under real pressure?

Daniel: 40-49 (82%), 3 tds
Reesing: 28-49 (57%), 2 tds, 2 int

...and then, the scoreboard: 36-28

Lolz. Yeah, because everyone knows that one game is all you need to know how good or bad is a QB.

I'm not saying Reesing is a bad QB. He's not. But saying Daniel is better "eh...not by much" isn't correct. And like it or not, in the two biggest games he played in last year (MU & VT), he carried similar stats. Its hard to compare the two with the difference in last year's schedules though.

Eh, not by much is correct. Neither one is going to be an NFL QB.

What does that have to do WITH THE GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL?!?!?!?! ALl that matters is Mizzou won, and everything else is pointless banter. Yeah, KU had some sucksess in some secondary sport, women's field hockey or something like it, but even that team had at least 3 losses. Mizzou had 2 losses, and should have been granted immunity from having to play anyone else, and thusly given the National Championship trophy on the merit of their KU victory alone.

Nonsense, I have declared football a minor sport. Football just doesn't matter.
