I have had a sharp pain on my left shoulder for the past 5 days...and it doesn't seem to be getting better. I did wake up awkwardly sunday with a slight headache and neck and shoulder pain. The headache and neck pain went away by the end of the day. Not sure what i could've done but its still hurts. Even when i burp a sharp pain goes right to it...any ideas what i should do? I have put icy hot on it twice today and the pain isn't any less but has felt decently when that stuff is applied. I may go see a dr. if it isn't gone this weekend. I am able to move my arm all around and everything just fine, but it still hurts and has made it hard to sleep.

Ugh, sounds like it may be a pinched nerve, I have one in my neck that I've been battling for almost eight months. A physical therapist may be able to stretch it and get the pressure off of it. You definitely need to see someone about it if it has been bothering you that long.

I am going through the same thing.

My pain was nagging and then became debilitating after a waterski ride.

I went to a chiro who instructed me to ice 4 times a day. After a week I was able to only ice twice a day.

I stopped lifting and only did cardio.

Yesterday was my first day lifting again for the 1st time in a month.

I still hear my different joints popping back there. Sucks getting old.

I wouldn't panic yet, I'm an old broken down SOB. I did get relief from the severe pain almost immediately from the therapy. I also didn't stick with it as long as I probably should have either.

haha ok i wont panic, my gf currently sees a chiro anyway so worst case i can have them check it out sat or sun too...its weird at times its not so bad then it has been bad, esp when i lay down. Hopefully its something mild, feels almost like a pulled muscle would, but i didnt do anything with my shoulder

I am 38. I am still able to snowboard, surf, waterski better than most people younger than me.

The older I get though the more the maintenance exercises wear my body down. Those are the important ones though.

I have shifted an exercycle and a rowing machine for cardio (no impact.)

I feel good after the last 2 days lifting and should have my back and shoulders strong enough to paddle when surfing on the weekend of the 4th.

I had a sharp pain in the shoulder/shoulder blade area that needed surgery(Right shoulder nerve decompression). I do certain things and the pain comes back tho.

Yep as some have said it would most likely be a pinched nerve... Depending on how you feel about chiropractors i would recommend seeing one. Could be something to do with neck aliignment hence the neck and head pain and if this is the case then something may be able to be done about it sooner than later. However chiropractors arnt for everyone...

Well i hope i can stay that active when im older, that is pretty cool you do all the water sports stuff. Are you in constant pain though or does it lessen if you rest more?

You had surgery due to the nerves then? How did that go, was it a short recovery time or long?

I have a tendency to slouch, my posture isn't the best, but for awhile ive tried to make sure i stood up straight, shoulders high etc...
My gf currently goes to a chiro just to keep her body tension low or whatever, so maybe ill give them a try this weekend since their open. My pain did start with the neck and just worked its way to the shoulder, so who knows

Back to work within a month. I'm so sure that they fixed the problem but it does feel better than it did.

I had to wear a bandage for a week with my arm in a sling. I started rehab after that and continued that 3 times a week for 3 weeks. Lots of ice and percocet after the surgery but nothing helped before the surgery.

Geez, Mojo's only 38. Me my cousin and her husband all still slalom ski and we are all in our mid to late 40's. My cousin's husband just learned to ski probably 5 years ago. My dad waterskiied on two at age 70. My uncle slalomed a year before he died (skiied of the dock with two then dropped one), and he had maybe half a lung left. I had a professor who windsurfed into his 80's after multiple hip replacements.

It's not llke your body falls apart when you hit 35. No, check that, it basically does fall apart but if you are the least bit motivated there is very little you can't do as you age.

Oh i know what you are saying, i just have a history of a weak body since i had surgery for achalasia. Defeciency in vitamins etc...i have to take daily vitamins and other meds daily, but i guess who doesn't. i just hope im not weaker by then, but my dr says my body reacts to things like im 10-15 years older, even though i have felt better lately since ive been more active and doing stuff.

ROFL, on punching someone, must've been a nice wack.

I definetly don't have the pain you do, hope you get better soon. I think my mom has a rotator cuff problem, shes been delaying surgery though

Sorry to hear that man, hope that things go well on that. Did you do something to injure it? Are you able to move it around ok, your arm over your head etc or just too much pain?

I don't recall doing anything significant that could've caused it and the pain is always there.sometimes just an ache but then sometimes it flares up but good.I can lift my arm over my head but there is a little discomfort in doing so.

Thing that really sucks is my firework truck arrived yesterday and we have to start unloading on Monday so that'll be a good test as some of those boxes are very heavy.

Like most have said it is probably a pinched nerve, but you could have a slight seperation(doubtful.) Was your neck really sore and stiff the next day or did it just hurt? You could have what they call rye neck. If I where you I'd pass on a chiropractor. Once you start moving things around you'll feel like you always need it done. I'd just go straight to the source and see an Ortho guy. He should be able to give you an actual diagnosis rather than just start moving shit around trying to guess what it is.

Man I hope you don't have to be put down....that would suck.

Could be impingement tendinitis. I had it in my right shouler (I'm left handed). For me it was basically a natural bone spur in my shoulder that one of my tendons rubbed back and forth on for two many years. It got to the point where I couldn't wash the upper left half of my body with my left hand in the shower.

After trying a couple different things doc eventually scoped it and cut the spur out, then shocked the tendon to shorten it to make up the difference.

Basically good as new, although if I fall asleep too long on that side it's a little sore for a minute or two.

Maybe you'll get lucky and it's not as serious as you think.

The medical term for shoulder pain is "The Suck".

It was Adhesive Capsulitis that got me hooked on lortabs. When you have shoulder pain, you can't lift, you can't sleep, and you damn sure can't fight off a dozen spider monkeys intent on mischief.

38 is not old. I was with my uncle (66 years old) on Cornice at Mammoth at Easter and he was one of the 1st ones down the run. Cornice is a double black diamond that pretty much goes straight down.

The people I waterski with are in their late 40's and early 50's and run the slalom course at 38 mph with half of the ski rope (the shorter the rope the more difficult it is to make it through the course.)

Went to the dr today and got x-rays later, should hear back soon. Dr pushed on some points that hurt bad. Gave me some medication for it, suggest based off what he did that it could be a partial seperation of the ac joint or just a bruised shoulder, hard to tell. I should find out soon whats up. If the meds don't work possibly physical therapy or a cortisone shot is next. Hopefully the meds will help, the pain has lessened a bit but is on/off, more on it seems when i try to sleep, as ive had to resort to tyelonol pm to try to get a few hrs worth.

I am supposed to hear back soon and let him know next week how it is feeling if any better.

He didn't seem to think it was a pinched nerve at all and didn't really say anything on that, but if it doesn't go away ill mention to him again if its possible

In both shoulder I have popping and even feel something 'catch' on occasion. After a good shoulder or chest day sometimes I can barely move my left arm because of my shoulder.

Maybe I should have it checked out sometime. :(

talk about strange. I am on hold on the phone right now with my orthodpedic office to look into scheduling shoulder surgery. I have had multiple shoulder problems in both shoulders for the past 15 years. My guess is you have a strained shoulder in one of the tendens. Does it hurt when you lift it straight up and put your bicep next to your ear? If so, probably acromiaclavicular (a/c) ligament. I would recommend ibuprofen 800 mg every eight hours and no heavy lifting for about three weeks to see if it subsides before seeing a orthopedist.

Sounds a lot like the way my torn rotator cuff started.... I would advise getting it checked out. If that's what it is, it will only get worse. I was too the point that I was in serious pain putting my shirt on in the morning.

I am pretty sure is that type of injury. Too many medical bills already right now so have to put it off as long as I can physically do it. Having a high pain thresh hold can be good at times but I have had it result in more damage than was necessary. This is probably going to be one of those occasions... :(
