There were a few on there that surprised me, as well. But that's not the point of this thread. Movies are all subjective; it's damn near guaranteed on a list of 1,000, that you'd have some you don't agree with.

For instance, I thought A.I. was very good, though it would have been better if Kubrick was alive to have made it instead of Spielberg.

I couldn't agree more. The ground breaking special effects were wonderful, but the movie was utterly incoherent and the performances were wooden at best. Sort of like the first Star Trek movie.

2010 was dramatically better and featured excellent actors and a coherent plot you could follow without reading the book (which I did anyway).

Luke Skywalker was great in it!

I actually haven't even seen 2010. Maybe I'll rent it this week with that 2-for-1 coupon. Or grab it in HD if I can find it.

The other movie I need to see is Willow. Yes, LOTR ripoff, I know, but it's a Lucasarts 80s production I haven't seen so I must. Plus I heard it had two-headed dragon. SO THERE.

Guilty postscript: I saw Dragon Wars at the rental place the other night and wanted to rent it.

Actually, Willow is a Star Wars rip off, with the midget as Luke Skywalker and Val Kilmer as Han Solo. Very similar to the way Waterworld ripped off Road Warrior. It was shitty and lame. Save that two hours of your life.

2010 is excellent, though.

Val Kilmer makes a dashing hero and the action scenes are solid. The midgets suck as actors though.

There a good number of geeky films I've missed out on. Especially 80s flicks. I only recently saw Rambo II and III, like a few months ago. It's fun discovering classic films 20 years after they were made. Makes me feel like a kid again. For some reason I really enjoy 80s cinema.

I still appreciate alot of 80's geek cinema because they actually used real locations and on-set practical effects instead of CGI.

It forced the filmakers to be more creative.

What other 80's flicks havent you seen that you want to see? Just curious...

One entertaining fantasy flick from the 80s that many people don't know about is The Sword and the Sorcerer, a cheesy yet entertaining Conan-esque hack n slash flick starring Lee Horsley. I have it on DVD. The transfer is pretty bad, but it's still fun to watch. A good guilty pleasure movie.

Uh, I dunno. I could probably pick them out of a list.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The Thing (got this in 1080p...maybe this weekend)
Spinal Tap
The Running Man
Re-Animator
Nightmare on Elm Street (my grandmother lives on East Elm Street lol)
Lethal Weapon
Johnny Dangerously (I saw part of this and love Keaton so wanted to see the whole thing)
Hellraiser
Halloween (70s technically, but supposed to be a classic. In fact there are a LOT of John Carpenter films I have missed out on)
Friday the 13th
Cobra
Commando (lol at the last two)
Beverly Hills Cop (I saw the second one - lack of pussy make you brave, man!)
The Beastmaster
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Classic
The Thing (got this in 1080p...maybe this weekend) - Classic
Spinal Tap - Never seen it all the through. Lots of people love it
The Running Man - Cheesy fun. Nothing special though
Re-Animator - Havent seen it in years. I liked it when i was like 15
Nightmare on Elm Street - Classic
Lethal Weapon - Classic R rated hardboiled action flick. The type they dont make anymore.
Johnny Dangerously - Another one i havent seen in years.
Hellraiser - Classic
Halloween - Classic. Anything Carpenter is worth checking out from 70's and 80's
Friday the 13th - Cheesy, but probably the best one out of all of them
Cobra -Cheesy, but ill admit ill stop and watch it if it pops up on cable
Commando - Cheesy, but still alot of fun
Beverly Hills Cop -Classic. I miss this Eddie Murphy
The Beastmaster - Was cheesy even back in the 80's
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai - Never seen it. Has a huge cult following
48 hrs - Classic R rated hardboiled action flick. The type they dont make anymore.

Which brings up another point. PG-13 has killed the R rating.

Here's another WTF to add to the long list of WTFs in this thread: Aliens, but no Alien? Granted, Aliens kicked much ass, but ALIEN was a phenomenal gothic horror movie. I'd rate it second best horror movie of all time behind only The Exorcist (one of the greatest movies of all time, period).

No doubt. A truly frightening movie.

I remember seeing the re-release at the theatre. A goup of rowdy teens sat in front of us; giggling and displaying false machismo. They shut right the f*ck up after the "spider walk" scene (cut from the original as it was deemed "too intense" by William Friedkin; and he was right... it was effing creepy!). I remember the look on their faces as they exited... they were shocked. It takes a lot to shock teens these days. Amazing how powerful that 1973 classic truly is.

Conan the Barbarian or Conan the Destroyer?? :)

Despite it's obvious limitations, Conan the Barbarian is very good movie. Very high production standards, great score, beautifully shot, and it had enough strong supporting performances to balance out the, shall we kindly say, "less experienced and skilled" actors. Olive Stone wrote the screenplay. It's a very straight forward story of revenge and redemption, and is also one my absolute favorite films (again, I am well aware of it's flaws, but I love it anyway, so blow me).

Conan the Destroyer, however, was an utterly vile, wretched piece of shit. You couldn't pay me to watch that again.

i'm gonna go ahead and defend a couple of the movies that are being bashed....

"clueless" is hilarious... if you haven't seen it, it is a much different film than you would think. very funny.

and "the thin red line" is a great movie. its sad and beautiful. although i agree that "glory" was a great movie, it was a totally different movie.

"glory" was heroic and uplifting (sort of embellished to a point).

jim caviezel's character wasn't heroic. it was a more realistic look at WWII, and it was a beautiful movie.

i, for one, would rate "the thin red line" high above "glory"

then again, i love depressing movies, so.....

When it comes to The Thin Red Line, I've known two types of people: those who couldn't sit through it, and those who did sit through it and wish they hadn't. You would be the first person who isn't a film critic (assuming you aren't a film critic) that I've EVER, repeat, EVER, known to defend it or admit to enjoying it.

I hated it. To paraphrase Ebert, I hated hated hated hated hated it. It was a disjoined, pointless, overraught annoying mess. A war movie that didn't have any war in it for the first hour. Admittedly, I didn't finish watching it. Nor will I. Ever.

If you like it, more power to you, but no offense, since you admit to believing that raging turd was a better movie that Glory, any further comments you have regarding movies in the future will be duly ignored.

There are a TON of horror classics I haven't seen. There's probably some primo stuff from the late 70s, too.

70's classics imo, horror and others that I'd suggest

Sorcerer
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Dawn Of The Dead
Dirty Harry
The Warriors
Phantasm
The Beguiled
The Mechanic
North Dallas Forty
The Legend Of Hell House

As for John Carpenter I'd say the original Assault On Precinct 13 is a must see too

Can only guess Kill Bill didn't make it because they couldn't choose between I and II and didn't want to give Tarantino 4 films.

That's a pretty good list - I've seen them all except for Spinal Tap. You'll love Re-animator. And The Thing rules.

The original The Thing is one of my favorite movies. The remake was pretty good too.

Were you in prison or something for the last 25 years? How did you miss all those big movies?

Spinal Tap is amazing, all the more so when you watch it and realize it was a decade ahead of the likes of MTV Cribs and all those VH1 reality series.

To satirize something that exists is one thing, but to do that AND even more effectively satirize what was to come is friggen genius.

Cannot recommend it enough.

Fight club had a good director and good acting but the story just sucked. Maybe I'm just good at calling endings.

I'm sitting at only 43. Of course, being 21, and most of these movies being older movies, I would say that is understandable.

It seems weird the lack of modern movies. Is a movie like wine, the older it gets the better? I really don't understand this list. A movie like Chicken Run made the list when there are far better movies out there?

I'm with you. I don't get why some of the super older movies are heralded as the best ever made. It's almost elitist or snobbery by the industry, in my opinion.

I'm sure ratings, grammies, etc go into it. And probably the taste of the people who made the list.

Excalibur - trippy as hell. I think I see what they were going for though. Pure melodrama.
