We're producing a show about a guy that teaches men how to pick up women. I was just in on a conference call with the creative people. This is so not me. I don't ****ing care, but everyone on the call is taking it so seriously. I have got to get out, but I can't unless I simply just check out.

I am surrounded by a bunch of effected SoCal TV people that take their work very seriously. Good for them, but it's just not me. I've tolerated these people for 15 years and I'm at the end of my rope. I need something in my life that brings ME happiness. My wife's happy, my daughter's happy, my friends are happy, my co-workers are happy. Honestly, I'm not happy.

I'd bet all my casino bucks that many of them are not really as happy as they seem. I've lived in SoCal and it can suck the life out of you.

Do you have the means to accomplish the check out? If so, give it a try. I've thought about checking out of my industry and taking up more of a blue collar job. I think I'd like landscaping.

If that's the case, I recommend that you take immediate action, Mr. bogey.

Were I you, I would consider taking up meditation. It requires discipline and it's difficult at first, but once you achieve positive contact with your Chakras, life will unfold before you like a rare and beautiful flower. Unless you're allergic to rare flowers, in which case, life will cause you to sneeze and choke on endless rivers of disgusting nasal drainage that makes you gag and almost vomit while your eyes burn like twin midgets are poking them with sand-covered, red hot knives.

Hope this helps.

I "checked out" once. It only lasted for a couple of years. I moved to a smaller town, got a job tending bar, chased women, drank too much, slept late. Eventually I got tired of that as well and checked back in.

very sage advice--I would add experience relationships and emotion. some sure signs of a full-blown MLC:

having trouble sleeping because you're laying awake, rolling any number (or making some up) of regrets about what you coulda/shouda/woulda done with your life.

low-grade depression--losing interest in everyday things that used to give you pleasure.

snappy with family and friends--displaced anger/aggression/self-loathing

going in decision circles

have I missed anything? pretty fun bag o sh** ain't it? if you have kids, nothing else matters--you've been granted the opportunity to nurture the most incredible spiritual relationship on earth--don't blow it with non-productive self-absorption ;)

I don't think so... it is hard to find a job you love, but I don't think it's all that hard to find a job you can at least tolerate. I took my first job out of college because I couldn't find a decent one, and after the new job smell wore off, I despised it. I remember waking up every morning and the first thought that crossed my mind was how much I hated getting up to go to work, followed by something like "Holy sh*t, it's only [day]".

My second job out of college wasn't what I wanted to find myself doing 10 years down the road, but I didn't mind going to work or dealing with coworkers, which makes a HUGE difference. I was there a couple of years, and left for a job that I really do love.

I would think the majority of people fall into the gray area where they tolerate their job and find happiness in family or friends or whatever. Like someone else said, life is too short to hate your job.

I have a career I love but the stress is killer. The hours are long and and the working conditions are sometimes not great.

I constantly think about vanishing. So much that I have a bag packed in the trunk of my car and enough seed cash to last me a year. It is hard at night after a 16 hour day not to drive past my off ramp and just keep going until I can't drive anymore.

The reason I don't is because I am stubborn and I won't let anything beat me.
I would have never made it this far in my life by quitting and I am not going to start now.

My advice Mr. Bogey is see a Doctor it could be depression, low testosterone,
sleep apnea sp?, or any number of health related issues. It could also be good old fashioned burn out. I go through this once a year.

I would find something to give you joy and make it a habit. ( I took up swimming)

In all seriousness, Mr. bogey ... take some time out for yourself - a couple of days at least - grab a journal and a pen and write down your dreams - the things that you know in your heart would provide a sense of fulfillment for you. They might be either vocational or avocational. Whatever they are, if you are honest with yourself and these are your true goals, pursue them with all your heart and soul remembering that 90 percent of life is the journey. You say that your family is happy, but take it from me ... once you are on the road toward your true goals, your family will be even happier.

I'm not one to be philosophical, but I am grateful every day when I wake up. Some days are better than others. Some are worse.

But, even my worst day is better than being dead. Better than my wife not having a husband. Better than my kids not having a father.

I've never viewed life differently than that. When I was younger, I had different reasons for always looking forward, but the drive was always there.

What you're feeling is not uncommon at all, Mr. bogey. There's even an axiom dealing with the subject ... something about grass being greener on the other side of the nudist park property line.

Sure, you can "suck it up" and be miserable in your soul. Or, you can "suck it up" and find happiness and fulfillment. It's a choice. Maybe you're one of the lucky people who still has inner dreams to follow - dreams that are pulling you in a different course than the one you're currently on - and the conflict you're feeling is the denial of your true self.

I don't particularly like my job. I like the company. Don't mind the work. Really like a few of my co-workers. But the pay is ass and there is one bitch there that drives me up the wall. No one can understand how the worthless waste of ass is still employed.

That shit wears on me. I go every damn day and do the best work I can. But it is really hard to do when this bitch is as worthless as tits on a boar.

I want out of the situation. If they were to fire her and give me her job, that would take care of most of it (yes the cuntstain gets paid more than me), but I can't say that I'm experiencing the same kind of burnout as you. I've been burnt out before, but not to the extent as you.

Whenever I need a boost, I just spend some time to myself. Sometimes that is enough for a recharge. I might also suggest sending the kids to grandmas or a babysitter and spend some time with your wife. Go out have fun. Do some stuff. Rest your soul a bit.

The other thing is that I'm 25 and desperately trying to get ahead. Maybe you can set a goal for yourself (new job, promotion, buy an RV, sock away enough cash for a mancave) to get yourself refocused professionally.

Best of luck bogey. It's tough.

If you let yourself snap there is a price to be paid. The question that you have to ask is which price is greater. Most likely the answer is somewhere in the middle. You need to find a way to hold up your responsibilities and take care of those you love while still giving yourself some inner peace. I can just about guarantee you will suffer lifelong guilt if you pursue the dropping out path.

What you're feeling just flat out sucks. Sure wish I had a halfway decent answer for you.

Consider shopping for a church where you're comfortable. What can it hurt?

Actually, it's 11th "largest"....global effects would be significant; but in many ways, many of us would consider ourselves "better off."

CA is the epitome of the lunatic fringe, sofaras the rest of the country is concerned.

It would be a short-term 'tragedy;' with long-term "improved" prospects.

I doubt you're fooling anyone. I'm sure the wife can tell you're miserable. If she's got enough common sense to sniff out when you come home after a bad day at work I'm sure "absotively super **** you miserable" can be detected.

If you don't talk to your wife she may assume it's her. "We've got great kids, nice house, good job...is it me?" If your family really does "mean the world" to you give your wife the respect of talking with her about it.

For all you know she could be feeling the exact same way...

People who want to be involved in the creation of films and television - people with a passion for this industry.

But, I could be wrong.

No.

I'm implying that a man with a family, a nice home, and a good job has no business complaining about life in a forum where people have relatives that have been ravaged by the forces of nature, that don't have homes and where some have lost family members. A forum in which there are good, hard-working people who don't have jobs, homes or family.

I think it's disingenuous.

For the record. My original intention was not to complain about my job. My original intention was to point out that I have a hard time appreciating/seeing happiness.

I guess it depends on your perspective.

I don't really care about what else is happening in this state. Gay marriage, taxes, blah, blah, blah. I only care about the things that I can control.

My job, my family, my friends - that's what's important to me. And the fact that I get to spend time with these people in beautiful, sunny weather almost 365 days a year is a blessing. The ocean, the mountains, blue skies, the walks, hikes and biking at the ocean - these are all amazing gifts.

We don't have thunderstorms or tornadoes, snowstorms or ice and while geology is a concern, it's not a daily concern. I lived that for 27 years and greatly appreciate the fact that I don't deal with that now.

And while it's certainly not Utopia, there's so much to do and so much enjoy that focusing on the negatives in life has been reduced to an absolute minimum. If at all.

Way to stir up the sh*t, Mr. DaneMcCloud!!!

Having lived in the Valley, a canyon or two, Santa Monica, and on the beach at Malibu, I'm more pro-California than anti-California. But, like most places, it's the people that make the geography worthwhile to live in.

However, Mr. bogey wasn't complaining about his family, his home, or the entertainment industry (as I read his original post). He was expressing "unhappiness". Perhaps his environment contributes to those negative feelings and perhaps not. Either way, it doesn't matter. Instead, maybe Mr. bogey is simply meant for something different and deep inside his consciousness there's something that is making him uncomfortable with the status quo which he interprets as "unhappiness".

Look at it this way, people can be satisfied with their current existence, but if everyone were to do that, Abraham Lincoln would never have read a book and would have split logs his entire life and been perfectly content with that role. Instead, he was drawn to something greater. That "feeling" of discomfort or lack of fulfillment isn't something to denegrate, it's something to celebrate and maybe Mr. bogey just needs to discover the nature of his true calling.

Are you telling me that it's socially acceptable to have long hair in business where you live?

That the Ramones and Lou Reed are a staple of radio?

Or that Asians are prevalent in the KC area?

Responding to the label that all SoCal citizens are "morally bankrupt"?

Stating that nowhere in the Midwest would I be able to work in such a capacity in the entertainment business as in Los Angeles?

Stating my tax burden is higher in my state than in yours?

Stating that a degree from K-State is different than one from Stanford?

Stating the lifestyle in Cali is different from Kansas?

These are not facts? I didn't state an opinion - I stated facts. And those posts were littered with personal experience, not opinion.

Your perception (or lack therof) is so skewed and twisted that it's blinding you from understanding the true intent of those posts, which was to give examples of my life and events that pertain to me.

Wow, your reading comprehension really IS poor.

The anecdotes I refer to are those to which you have linked. There is no evidence of "Midwest slandering", only real-life examples. I lived in Kansas for 27 years and have been in SoCal for 15 years: I think that's I'm fairly qualified to point out the differences, socially and otherwise, of living in both places. You, OTOH, have not lived in SoCal so your perception is media-driven. One bad apple...

I don't have the time nor the will to search for your "racist" comments. If you say they don't exist, I'll take you at your word.

Not all of CA has to fall into the ocean, just L.A. and Oakland.

I know we'd all really miss out on the latest Tomkat and Brangelina updates, and heaven knows I couldn't role myself out of bed knowing the Mole 14 wasn't going to be produced, but I think we'd all move on from there.

Hey bro I get that all the time. I have terrible insomnia. If your having a tough time laying in bed and getting to sleep go to your doctor and ask them if they'll give you a script for some Xanax. Needless to say getting to sleep is not a problem and the best part is it only has a 1 hr half-life so you wake up feeliing like a million bucks. Tylenol PM will leave you drowst as shit the next day. Careful though because Xanax can cause you to becoming on it just to get to sleep normally. Just talk to your doctor and take it EXACTLY the way it is prescribed. Also alot of that have been without sleep for even just one day have their reaction times be that of of someone that is drunnk. Not really sure is this is your prob, but just thought I'd throw that ought there for you. You can give me a PM and I can put you in touch with sleep disorder doctos. Good luck

I know you mean well, but pointing a depressed person towards Xannys is a terrible idea.

Gee, thanks for the insight, Mr. Gunsmoke.

I'm sure you're intimately familiar with this business and this town. You know, living in Montana and all. And considering the fact that there are a countless number of magazines and a countless number of television shows and programs covering Hollywood, I think it's safe to say that I know what the **** I'm talking about.

Unlike you.

I think you're missing the point Hollywood. The guy seems to be burned out on his job and needs a change, why in the hell would you give a rats ass if he doesn't warm up to "your business?" Not everyone is cut out for the same job, or enjoys the same things in life. I have no doubt that you know the business and really seem to enjoy it, but he doesn't seem to share the same zest for the industry.

bogey: If you're that burned out, find a way to make a change buddy.

Well apparently, you hadn't read past my first reply.

And Bogey already admitted that he couldn't get out.

I hope he finds a suitable solution.

Dane, you seem to be implying that Bogey should STFU because he has the privilege of working in the entertainment industry. Is that correct?
Honestly I did not read it that way. I read it that Bogey should be thankful he has a job a nice home and his health along with a family. If you guys would quit concentrating on Dane's negative reaction to the Cali bashing you might find that he really makes solid points.

He might have said it to Bogey in a nicer manner, but I believe his point was enjoy your life you actually have it pretty good.

As to Bogey I think everyone has a bad day and he just posted about it. I am sure he is fine now.

A lot of people read Hollywoods posts and came to the same conclusion. He may be ok "in real life," but he comes across as about the most arrogant prick on the face of the earth in a lot of his posts.

Coincidence?

I did have a very bad day. Truthfully, I have several, and I wondered if others do too. I am quite sure I need to speak with a professional. However, your post brought me back to reality. I think Dane may be unintentionally arrogant, but I also think he's a very content guy. That's great for him. I know I should be thankful I have a lot going for me, sometimes I am, often I'm not. Not because I'm a whiner, at least I don't think I am. The was my point to the thread. That's why I asked the question.

Why not have your family join you on Friday nights in Hermosa or Manhattan Beach?

A little ocean-side entertainment (restaurants and shopping) is always a stress-reliever.

Then head home after the traffic dies down.

I advise that if you don't have a trusted friend you can talk to then professional help might work. For that matter even though I have never been religious I know that Ministers, Priests and Nuns are for the most part well intentioned people and usually trained listeners. You might want to take advantage of their free services.

Take care Bogey and try not to let it get you down.
