Salina man survives shooting himself in the head

SALINA, Kan. - A 36-year-old Salina man survived shooting himself in the head after pulling the trigger of a gun he thought was empty.

Shannon D. Austin avoided serious injury when the .22-caliber revolver discharged a bullet above one of his eyes Sunday morning, said Salina Police Deputy Chief Carson Mansfield.

The shooting occurred when Austin's neighbor, Michael Urich, stopped by to tell him he had been in a fight at a local bar, police said. Austin fired the revolver - which he thought did not contain any bullets - several times in the air in a show of support for Urich. :bang:

Urich told Austin to stop, but Austin then turned the gun toward his head and pulled the trigger. :doh!:

The bullet hit Austin's skull above an eye, but didn't penetrate the bone.

Austin was treated at a local hospital, where police ticketed him for shooting a firearm within city limits.

:banghead: When will people learn, if you think the gun is unloaded, 60% of the time, it's loaded every time.

In other news the Darwin Committe has decided to award him a special close but no cigar prize. The reward? A gold plated .45.

A 22 bullet didn't penetrate his skull? That's amazing to me.

22 short isn't much of a bullet. At the wrong angle, I could see it bouncing off at short range. I've seen it happen with deer and coyote skulls when trying to put them down with a 22 pistol. I've heard that a 22 LR will bounce of a cow's head when shot at 50', but have never tried that....

“Austin fired the revolver - which he thought did not contain any bullets - several times in the air in a show of support for Urich.”

Is this some kind of high five variation that the good folks of Kansas have come up with to show support to one another.

I mean wtf……jr brings home his report card…..hey dad I got a great report card all D’s……why jr let me pull my gun out and shoot holes the ceiling to show my support for you…..
