View Full Version : Misc I Need An Air Rifle Recommendation

Donger

I would like a recommendation on a .177 air rifle, preferably one with a scope. FPS needs to be in the 1200+ range and rather quiet.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Just remember when you're aiming that Midnight_Vulture will be going 100+ mph.

At 1200 FPS and MV traveling at 100mph how far would you need to lead him to hit the deflection shot. :hmmm:

If it's domestic, maybe just shoot it in the hind end.

Well no one really gives a shit if you kill something wild except for the tree hugging hippies and you can bury their unwashed bodies in your garden(hey you're recycling then!).

That's a pretty expensive pellet gun.

Good quality usually comes with a price. I have a Benjamin Sheridan pistol that I bought in '92....still works and is fun to shoot.

I bought my son a Crosman 760 a few years ago, and it's proven to be adequate for varmint control purposes. They don't come with a scope but they can accommodate one.

I like the Gamo CF-X. It'll send 177 pellets over 1000 fps, pretty quiet and very accurate to 50 yards or so (tho' I favor the .22 version myself). Pyramyd Air is my favorite online airgun dealer.

I bought a Crossman 760 a few years ao for a woodpecker problem I was having, but it's illegal to shoot woodpeckers here so i just "scared" them.

.177 is a waste of time if you are trying to kill an animal. Bullet weight is king.

I have the .22 version of this:
http://www.pyramydair.com/p/beeman-SS-1000t-air-rifle.shtml

Simple barrel-break give you 800 fps, and it shoots nice groups.

Couple this with a 18gr Crow-Magnum pellet, and it is the most devastating thing you'll find, especially under $200.

http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/pellet.pl?pellet_id=302

I've had it for about 18 months now, and about 30 squirrels and 1 big friggen rabbit (do a search) later I'd buy it again!

Oh, and I live in a Subdivision :) You'll want to stay subsonic (under 1000 fps) if quiet is part of your game...

Give the guy a call at Pyramid air, and tell him what you are wanting to do. I too, thought FPS was king, and he talked me into the .22. He was right. That guy knows his stuff, lives, eats, breathes air rifles. He is pretty forward and little gruff, but I'm glad I talked to him. That rabbit I shot was the biggest rabbit I've ever seen, shot him at about 20 yds. Rolled him backwards and didn't friggin' move. I actually was going to get the RWS 52 in .22, but he was out of stock and my backyard was getting over run by squirrels. If you've got the cash it's sweet:

Go with the .22. You won't be sorry. I have killed many a furry critter with pellet rifles and a .22 cal. @ 1000 fps or more is devestating.
Bonus: It makes an awsome 'thud' sound on impact.:D

He wants to "adjust" something in his neighborhood but he won't say what or why he needs supersonic. So I am done with this thread.
