AP - Jun 25, 8:52 pm EDT MLB Gallery HOUSTON (AP)—Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon was suspended indefinitely by the team Wednesday for insubordination after reportedly grabbing general manager Ed Wade by the neck and throwing him to the ground.

Chacon, upset after getting demoted to the bullpen over the weekend, told the Houston Chronicle this problem began when Wade saw him in the dining room before the game against Texas. Wade wanted to meet with Chacon in manager Cecil Cooper’s office, the pitcher said.

“I sat down to eat and Ed Wade came to me and very sternly said, ‘You need to come with me to the office,”’ Chacon said. “I said ‘for what?’ I said ‘I don’t want to go to the office with you and Cooper.’ And I said, ‘You can tell me whatever you got to tell me right here.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, you want me to tell you right here?’ And I said, ‘yeah.’ I’m not yelling. I’m calm.”

Chacon said things went downhill from there.

“He started yelling and cussing,” Chacon said of Wade, according to a story on the Chronicle’s Web site. “I’m sitting there and I said to him very calmly, ‘Ed, you need to stop yelling at me. Then I stood up and said, ‘You better stop yelling at me.’ I stood up. He continued and was basically yelling.”

Chacon said that after Wade told him he needed to “look in the mirror,” it got worse.

“So at that point I lost my cool and I grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground. I jumped on top of him,” he said. “Words were exchanged.”

Chacon said players quickly came and separated the two. He recalled outfielder Reggie Abercrombie pulling him away from Wade.

Wade announced the move, but would not provide any other details. Chacon has been upset since being bumped from the rotation and moved into the bullpen on Sunday.

Chacon is 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 15 starts for Houston this year. The right-hander set a major league record with nine straight no-decisions to start the season.

“He is suspended pending final resolution of whatever move we end up making with him,” Wade said.

When asked if Chacon was disciplined because he physically accosted Wade, the GM said: “I’m not getting into any details of anything beyond what I just said. It is an internal matter.”

Wade did confirm that Chacon’s agent called and requested a trade earlier this week but said “that has nothing to do with the events of today.”

Chacon is now concerned that he might not pitch in the majors again.

“Maybe it shouldn’t have happened,” Chacon said. “But when you do those things and you’re yelling at somebody and you’re cussing you better know what type of person you’re dealing with. If there’s any regret, I just wish they had just let me alone. I wish they had left me alone,” he told the Chronicle.

Chacon signed a $2 million, one-year contract with Houston in February after spending 2007 with Pittsburgh. He split time as a starter and a reliever there and was 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA and one save in 64 appearances with the Pirates.

I hope some Chiefs players are paying attention. Might be a good idea here.

As per Baseball Musings , Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon has been suspended for choking out general manager Ed Wade. "He started yelling and cussing," Chacon said of Wade. "I'm sitting there and I said to him very calmly, 'Ed, you need to stop ... "

Receiving a good yelling and cussing from a superior may be offensive (unless everyone ends up laughing about it after the situation is diffused), but battery is another matter entirely.

Assuming the account above is fairly accurate, if I were in the MLB front offices I'd be arguing for Chacon to be charged with a criminal act. Let him do a short stretch in jail along with his suspension.

Anything approaching this kind of crap against management is absolutely unsupportable in any line of business, IMO.

Totally uncalled for. If I hate someone in my office because they aren't happy with how I'm doing my job I might yell at them back and get in quite a verbal altercation, but no way I would ever choke them and throw them on the ground. His ass needs assault charges. This isn't in the heat of the game such as basketball or football where bodies are touching routinely on every play.

I very calmly threw him to the floor and jumped on top of him.

Listening to the talk radio shows in Houston this morning - the reports are that Wade asked Chacon to accompany him in Coop's office several times, even before the pitcher ordered his food. This altercation happened some 20-30 minutes later after Chacon received his food and sat down to eat. They're having a good time mocking Chacon on the radio. It all ends with," Give me 30 minutes - I gotta eat first!" Funny Stuff...

Now, I wonder what would happen if any of us were told by the 2nd in command at our company, to meet him in our bosses office - and we ordered food and sat down to eat it first?

In the good old days yes.. But in todays world he is justified..

He asked him to quit yelling at him.. Yelling is a form of abuse.. the GM did not quit, therefor Chacon had to defend himself..

The GM should have never started the situation...

Sorry, I think you couldn't be further off base (no pun intended).

I suspect you would be laughed out of almost every courtroom in this country if you offered "He was yelling at me" as a defense for what is clearly assault and battery. Did the GM handle this poorly? Yes. However, there is no excuse for escalating it to physical violence, especially in the manner the player did.

If it were my decision, this dipsh*t would have just rendered himself an untouchable by MLB. If he'd do this to a GM, why should I believe he wouldn't do it to an umpire or opposing player during a game if he lost his temper?

Why shouldn't the GM have asked him to come to his office (starting the situation)? He's fully within his rights, as he is the GM and Chacon is (for the moment) his employee. If Chacon isn't insubordinate and agrees to go as asked, then odds are the public yelling match never starts.
