'Spider-Man 4' aiming for May 2011 release

Peter Parker is swinging back into the muliplex—but not for a while.

“Spider-Man” producer Laura Ziskin said the fourth installment in the web-slinging superhero series is tentatively scheduled to arrive in May 2011.

In remarks Thursday to theater owners from California and Nevada, Ziskin said there was no finished screenplay, but that she and Sony Pictures were hopeful “Spider-Man 4” could be ready in three years’ time.

The first three movies comprise one of the most successful franchises in modern Hollywood history, grossing a combined $2.5 billion worldwide. Neither star Tobey Maguire nor director Sam Raimi is yet committed to work on the next installment. But Sony has paid Marvel to renew its rights.

Before she tackles the next “Spider-Man,” Ziskin is producing a one-hour fundraiser for cancer research that will be shown commercial-free on ABC, NBC and CBS on Sept. 5.

Ziskin, a cancer survivor, showed the several hundred exhibitors a new theatrical public service announcement directed by David Fincher (“Fight Club”) that promotes Ziskin’s cancer cause, Stand Up to Cancer.

I wanted to like 3, 'cuz I love Venom, but the movie just sucked. The first two were a lot of fun though. Glad they're waiting on 4, need to forget the suck that was 3.

Spiderman seemed to get worse with every movie.

The 1st had heart and solid story when perhaps the CGI wasn't top notch. You felt you could live with that (and the Power Ranger bad guy.) The 2nd flick seemed to be ho-hum in a number of areas but still overall a nice family flick.

The 3rd one? Overkill and underwhelming...

That was cringe-worthy to say the least.

I doubt it, that guy ages at the same rate as Dick Clark did.

I'm all in for Point Break 2 though...

I thought the doc oc one was the best. I really enjoyed the fight scenes. They could have been clipped right out of a comic. SpiderMan 3 ranks as rank, though.

Spider Man 2 is great. One of the best Comic Book films yet.

My sentiments exactly. If this series continues on it's course then I won't even want to see it.

The 3rd movie just had so much going on with it. The plot was just too sparse to create all the back ground for all these new (old) villains. I sure hope they come up with a better script for 4.

They tried to cram too much stuff into one movie, I think. Too many villians, heroes, personal problems, etc.. Plus, the portrayed result of Peter Parker's Venomization was lamer than a two-legged armadillo with a Dungeons and Dragons addiction. It's the danger Marvel faces with the Avengers movie, in my opinion - too many characters. Frankly, I think the Avengers movie should really be three movies ala LotR - that had an enormous number of characters, but Jackson pulled it off beautifully. Maybe doing the individual films first will allow them to get each individual's character development out of the way.

I also wonder about the script writers for these upcoming films. If they are smart, they'll stop being so damnedably obvious and develop plots that have some suspense and a surprise or two. The bad-guy, smash & grab approach is going to get old really fast.
