KY 3 News' Sara Sheffield reports on an injured teen from Ozark, Missouri who was tasered up to 19 times by police.

Passing motorists called Ozark police out of concern for the teen as he walked along the busy overpass. When the police arrived, the young man was lying on the shoulder of the highway directly underneath the 30 foot high overpass with a broken back and foot.

Doctors believe 16-year-old Mace Hutchinson broke his back and heel after falling, as his injuries are consistent with such a fall. The boy's family does not understand why police would have tasered the the teen 19 times after he was so seriously injured.

The teen's father said that the use of the taser caused Mace to develop an elevated white blood cell count, leading to a fever that delayed the young man's otherwise immediate surgery by two days.

Ozark Police Capt. Thomas Rousset attempted to explain why the taser was used:

"He refused to comply with the officers and so the officers had to deploy their Tasers in order to subdue him. He is making incoherent statements; he's also making statements such as, 'Shoot cops, kill cops,' things like that. So there was cause for concern to the officers."

Ozark police say that while there remains unanswered questions in the case, the reason for the use of the Taser is not one of them.

Wow. There's a whole lot about this deal that doesn't make sense.

With any luck, somebody was filming this encounter. For example, I can't see how a guy is "unsubdueable" after say ... 5 tazerings. Even if he's whacked out on something like PCP or PVC or PEZ. 5 tazerings does a body good. I have a feeling they were using him for target practice.

There are degrees of broken back. I doubt if he was laying on the ground with a severed spine protruding.

Probably more likely he was high on something really nasty and moving around raising hell in spite of the broken back.

I'm not one to generally defend cops, and 19 times with the taser certainly sounds extreme. But keep in mind, a few years ago he'd have been beaten with nightsticks or shot.

Actually, Mr. frazod, I do see your point. Unquestionably, in these more civilized times, those who protect and serve us are using less violent means to do so. Shooting a guy who just broke his back after falling from an overpass just doesn't seem right.

Can you begin to imagine how much those tazes must have hurt with a broken back? All of that involuntary twitching probably wreaked havoc on his broken back. They better hope he doesn't lose functionality of his limbs they might have a hard time proving they didn't cause it with the tasers.

I worked in that town for several years. I can say without a doubt the police dept. is a complete fugging joke. I'm suprised they didn't shoot him. They've done it before.

There aren't any cops in my family, dickbag. Typically my cop experience is getting speeding tickets. I view the bulk of them as state-sanctioned thieves. Happy now?

My point is that unless these are the worst cops on earth, they aren't going to taser some kid with a broken back over and over for kicks on a Saturday night.

I have a friend or had a friend who ended up becoming a cop, he was a normal guy when he joined after not even a year of being one he was doing nothing but hanging out with cops and turning into a total dick.....

It's just sad, at his wedding all the cops did was walk around and throw their weight around that they were cops and could do whatever they wanted.
