Ok, whats the strangest Olympic event?

What event just makes you say: "Why the heck is this an Olympic sport?"

Some of the gymnastics. Like the horse. Who thought of getting up on a long platform with 2 handles and spinning around a few times before dismounting.

And wtf is Tajikistan?

Dressage and equestrian in general. Horses scare me.

On the other hand, fencing is incredibly awesome and I wish we got more coverage of it in America.

And wtf is Tajikistan? The Tajiks are the Irish of Central Asia.

I think for me it would have to be Badminton. For me, thats something you play in your backyard while waiting for the BBQ to finish. Whats next, Horsehoes and yard darts as an event?

Handball and Equestrian.

I thought women's fencing was rather lame. Watching the American women face off for gold, it was just quick lunges and loud screams. I watched some men's fencing online, and that was a lot more entertaining.

I also saw that trampoline is an olympic event. WTF? Though, I have to admit I'm curious, lol...

God, handball really is a completely pointless sport. Can't swim? Can't kick a ball? Can't handle a stick? Can't put a ball in a small basket? We have JUST the sport for you! Just take this ball, run around, and throw it at a hockey-sized net with someone standing in front of it.

Rowing is excruciating to watch. A little boat goes in a straight line for 6 minutes. The precision is impressive.... for about the first 10 seconds and then the whole thing is monotonous.

You're not impressed? At least there's some unpredictable action in one of those matches. It's hard for me to watch "sports" in which everybody stays in a lane and any number of events looks exactly like the last.... Can you imagine sitting in the grandstand of a rowing venue all day long? If I were there and had no other entertainment I'd have my hands down my pants in the first 10 minutes.

I didn't say I wasn't impressed with them. Just don't think it should be an Olympic event. I would say the same for badminton too.

USA Network is showing weightlifting for the smaller guys (56kg?). They can move some weight. I'm getting a hernia just watching them.

The problem I have with fencing is that it doesn't penalize the winner for getting hit a split second after the loser does.

Sailing doesn't do it for me. It may be a great sport to do but is rubbish to watch.

Don't diss handball you heathen. It's a great game and we are world champions. :cuss:I am very curious to learn the answers to these questions: WHAT is the appeal? What niche does it fill that soccer, basketball, (either) hockey, lacrosse, and water polo don't fill? What sort of skills are important when it comes to being good at it? What makes it fun to watch?

Criticizing handball is dangerously close to criticizing football. It's just a different appendage. Stop it before you shatter the entire marketing sleight-of-hand (er, foot) that is the NFL.

I feel for the goalies in Water Polo.

You tread water for 10 minutes then the other team comes down and scores right away on you. Its got to be hard to block a shot. Its not like you can move very fast in water to block a shot.

Speed Walking

+1

I was shocked that speed walking was even a real sport when I first heard about the steroid scandal. It sounds like a sport you would see in movie with Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller.

I bet the speed walkers are the nerds of the track team.

ALL gymnastics events are extremely relevant and interesting to watch...as long as they wear the leotards.

Only one reason I disagree with this statement, the majority of the girls are around 15 and are built like 10 year old boys.

Bodacious weighed in just under 1 ton of mean, slathering, pissed off, bucking beef. Slap a Chinese guy on that bad boy, crack a beer, sit back, and enjoy. Lots more fun than karaoke.
