The two sides in the Derrick Harvey negotiations spoke for the first time in a week Saturday, but failed to break the stalemate.

After the Jaguars' 20-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in their preseason opener Saturday night, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said there were no developments in the talks.

Ken Kremer, Harvey's agent, said he spoke with Paul Vance, the vice president who negotiates the contracts for the Jaguars, for an hour Saturday without making any substantial progress. He said the Jaguars didn't make a new offer.

When the Jaguars resume practice today for their final two-a-day practice of training camp, Harvey's holdout will enter its 17th day, which is two days short of a team record.

Byron Leftwich, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, held out for 19 days in 2003.

The sticking point in the Harvey talks remains unchanged. Kremer wants what he believes is a market deal for Harvey in the eighth slot. The Jaguars believe the players drafted in front of Harvey, Vernon Gholston of the New York Jets and Sedrick Ellis of the New Orleans Saints, shouldn't set the market for Harvey.

In Harvey's absence, the Jaguars have had to do some scrambling at defensive end because they've been hit by a rash of injuries.

James Wyche is out for the season with a torn Achilles, and Jeremy Mincey has missed all of camp and won't be ready to start the regular season because of a wrist injury. And starter Reggie Hayward missed Saturday night's game with what he said was a minor hamstring injury. Del Rio declined to say if Hayward will practice today.

Here comes DakcMan to tell us how Harvey is the best DE in the draft and should get all the money he wants.

Well, if they didn't think that he had the value of the 8th pick in the draft, then they should've drafted someone else.

No, Chris Long is the best DE in this draft class.

They traded up for him, knowing well the kind of money they'd have to pay. You don't walk into a Ferrari dealership and try to pay Corvette money.

Jesus. They traded up for him, like almost twenty spots, but don't want the players taken in his vicinity to "set the market"? Talk about baking the cake and eating it, too.

Harvey ends holdout, signs with Jaguars

The Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --

Rookie defensive end Derrick Harvey ended a 33-day holdout Wednesday by signing a five-year, $23.8 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Harvey was the last first-round draft pick to sign, a lengthy holdout that frustrated coach Jack Del Rio and left the former Florida standout way behind heading into the regular season.

The eighth overall selection in April, Harvey was expected to immediately bolster a pass rush that struggled to pressure quarterbacks last season. But he missed all of training camp and the first three preseason games.

It was unclear whether Harvey would play in the preseason finale Thursday night at Washington. He was driving from Gainesville to Jacksonville in hopes of traveling with the team to Washington later Wednesday.
