Reading about the first sip got me to wondering...

I believe this poll has been done before, but oh well...

soda or coke.

Coke, to me, is Coca-Cola ... calling soda "coke" doesn't make sense.

My mom does that. Of coarse, Coke was the only soda she drank, so she usually always meant she wanted a Coke, not just a soda.

I think it's a regional thing. I once got into a debate about this on AOL when I had it, 10 years ago. I seemed to be the only person to call it "pop" ... most everyone else was from the upper midwest or east ...

Personally, I say either. I voted pop though, as that is what it's referred to in the NW.

I think pop is generally a midwest saying. Although I hear both in Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming.

There are many regional words like this. Cuss, curse, and swear. Pallet, skid, and board. Potato bug, pill bug, rolly polly. I moved from KC to Eastern Washington a few years ago and my ex-girlfirends mother asked me if I would like a toasted cheese sandwich. I said yes and had to get confrimation that she was going to come back with a grilled cheese for me.

I grew up saying SodaPop (born and raised in KC)

Out here pretty much most people say soft drink.

Pretty cool map. The fact that Coke dominates the southeastern part of the country does not surprise me at all.

When I was growing up in Missouri I called it pop, but I've spent the last 25 years on the west coast, east coast and Hawaii, where people call it soda, so I call it soda now.

Grew up (in Ca) saying "soda"; now use either, although probably still say "soda" more often than "pop."

By the way, a potato bug is NOT the same freakin thing as a pill bug. Jesus-ass-eating-Christ! Potato bugs are horrible monsters, like the frankenstein of bugs created in a genetic experiment conducted by demented aliens while pill bugs are silly little creatures you can use in a game of marbles.

Growing up at the Lake of the Ozarks, Kansas City people called it pop and St. Louis people called it soda. Here in the middle we call it soda pop. And judging by those maps, Missouri is split right down the middle.

Ummm - I'm from Spokane (and live in the area now) and I have never heard anyone call it a toasted cheese sandwich. It's always grilled cheese.

She must have been a Californian. ;)

And it is most definitely "pop" here, as you can see from DaFace's map.

So I guess people living in the white patches don't even have or know of carbonated beverages?

That map is beyond cool. Stuff like this is fascinating to me.

Growing up in Leavenworth, KS we called everything Coke. I lived in Terre Haute, IN; Beeville, TX; and Canon City, CO before moving to Williamsport, PA. We continued calling everything Coke as we didn't stay in any one place for a long time to catch on to the local colloquialisms. Now that I've lived in Central PA for nearly 15 years, I've taken to calling it Soda. I still call it Coke sometimes though. I do know from my trips out to Pittsburgh that western PA calls it Pop.

Another word that seems to change is "sub" or "hoagie." I know we called them subs when I lived everywhere but here in PA. Here they are hoagies. SOme people call them subs, you won't get strange looks, but most people say hoagie here.

From another thread a few weeks back, I found it interesting also how when I was a kid in Kansas, I always remember there being a Wal Mart. I was shocked to find out that the Wal Mart that had just opened when I moved here to PA in '93 was actually the first time these people had the chance to go to a Wal Mart. Wal Mart didn't make it up here till the 90's. A friend of mine used to think Burger King was only in PA. Also, Hardees is pretty prevalent (or it was) and we haven't had a Hardee's here since about '96. I could go on and on with this stuff. Grocery Stores are very regional too.

Soda Water, "Cold Drink", Tonic, Drink, and Soft Drink...if you're from England, some call it "Fizzy Drink"

I don't believe that I've ever heard someone call it pop here in the northeast. Soda is the standard term. Using coke as the generic term is not unheard of, but its usually used in reference to coca-cola.
