Patriots Pass Defense in Doubt (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/football/patriots/view.bg?articleid=1116077&srvc=rss) (full article)

The Patriots (http://patriots.bostonherald.com/patriots.bg) [team stats (http://scores.heraldinteractive.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=nfl/teams/077/team.aspx?id=077)] opened training camp with cornerback their biggest question mark, and they’re ending it the same way.
The Pats pared their roster to 53 players yesterday, and the biggest name on the list of cuts was veteran Fernando Bryant, who had spent virtually all of training camp as the starting left corner but now is in search of a new job.
Perhaps the last straw was the hurting Giants tight end Darcy Johnson laid on him while dragging Bryant 8 yards en route to a touchdown reception in Friday’s exhibition finale. It completed a lackluster preseason for Bryant, who looked better in practice than in games.
The play was reminiscent of another nail in the coffin - Monty Beisel getting trucked by Giants quarterback Jared Lorenzen in the 2006 preseason finale. Beisel was released shortly thereafter.
With Bryant gone, the two players in the mix to start at corner are rookie Terrence Wheatley and veteran Lewis Sanders. Wheatley spent a lot of camp playing nickel back and has the most potential, though the Pats may play it safe with him right out of the chutes.
Starting a rookie at corner would be nothing new, as Ellis Hobbs (http://news.bostonherald.com/search/?keyword=Ellis+Hobbs&searchSite=recent) [stats (http://scores.heraldinteractive.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=nfl/teams/077/playeraaa.aspx?id=5020,team=077)] (2005) and Asante Samuel (http://www.bostonherald.com/search/?topic=Asante+Samuel) [stats (http://scores.heraldinteractive.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=nfl/teams/077/playeraaa.aspx?id=3644,team=077)] (’03) illustrate. If Wheatley gets the nod, he’ll give the Pats one of the smallest starting corner tandems in the NFL, although both he and Hobbs are quick and can change direction on a dime, which is what the Pats seek.

Any news of this kind is good for us. Not that it will matter. We will be running the ball a lot until we fall behind by 20.

For the rest of their lives, the Pats' DBs will be having nightmares about Mike Cox and 4 yard gains off a bootleg.

We have a long history of great 89's in KC. Otis Taylor. Andre Rison. Jason Dunn. Now Devard Darling. So it is written, so it shall be done.

Darling's licking something, but I'm not sure it's chops exactly.

I guess he can thank his tongue for making the team because it sure as heck wasn't his hands.

The ONLY great on that list is Otis Taylor, and you are too young to have known his awesome achievements.

Devard Darling is just wearing a jersey. Otis Taylor struck fear into the hearts of opposing DBs.

This is great but...Brodie will need time to throw it. He won't be able to take advantage of their secondary on his back.

Who needs a pass defense to play the Chiefs? After the Chief's 10th straight draw play on third and long the Pats will have so many defensive players "in the box" that they'll have to add a side and make it a pentagon.

I have to decide whether to play Bowe against the Patriots D. Yea or Nay?I'd play him every week, I think. He'll get his yards and at least a half dozen TDs for the year.

Croyle: 40-42, 600 yards, 7 TDs.

I'm wondering how many Chiefs defensive players would've been cut right away after being run over by offensive players if Bellichick was coaching the Chiefs the last ten years...

Well, they did pick up Eric Warfield and Monty Beisel. And actually put Beisel at starting LB. And considered hiring Gun.

...and there lies my concern. Croyle has rarely gone downfield during the preseason; I'm not sure whether that's been intentional or not. I think the O-line is better than last year, but that doesn't mean it's good enough to give Croyle 7-step time.

Guess we'll see against the Pats.

EVen if PAts D is in doubt and even if Tom Brady doesn't start, we will probably lose because we are coached by HERM EDWARDS. Bellichick could probably beat Edwards and these chiefs with a highschool team.

They cut him, but they play to resign him after week one... that makes it so all the money for his contract isn't guarenteed or something like that.

Yeah, they'll never guess we'll call a draw play on every 3rd and long until the 4th quarter when were too far behind for it to matter.

Pat's pass D isn't in doubt week one. No team in the NFL's pass D is in doubt when they are playing either the Queeefs or the Raiders for that matter.
