CBS sues NFL Players over fantasy

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- CBS Interactive has filed a federal lawsuit in Minneapolis to clarify who can use the statistics that underlie fantasy football leagues.

The lawsuit filed earlier this week claims the NFL Players Association has threatened to sue the company if it does not pay licensing fees for the statistics.

CBS seeks a ruling saying that the players cannot control use of the publicly available numbers and cannot demand that CBS pay for their use.

A call to the attorney for the players association was not immediately returned Friday.

In a case involving a Missouri-based company's fantasy baseball games, Major League Baseball players argued they should be paid for the commercial use of their names. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled against them earlier this year.

What?

Basically from what I can gather is the NFL Players Association wants money .... because someone is using stats from the NFL (although I don't know how you trade mark a stat??) and want them to pay for licensing.

I think their should be a punishment for losing lawsuits..like having your ****ing balls ripped off..maybe their wouldn't be as many stupid lawsuites..of course the plaintiff usually wins anyway

So they want to copyright the stats. Does that mean that if i tell someone who doesn't get the NFL network that on thursday Chris Cooley only had 1 reception for 7 yards, I'm committing copyright infringement?

You can't copyright factual recollections of real events. The manner of presentation, yes, but the actual facts, no.
