The guy at Texas Western (now UTEP) who was the first to start five African American basketball players in the NCAA championship game — and win it — died Sunday.

Here's a little love for the guy who changed the game forever, and the guy who always denied that he meant to change the game at all.

He always said that he just wanted to play his best players in that 1966 NCAA Championship game against Rupp's Kentucky team.

I know that God will bless you, Coach Haskins.

Glory Road was a good movie based on him and that team

It was a good movie, but it was a lousy history.

For instance, the scrawled epithets on the wall of the motel never happened at all, anywhere, at any time. That's a dramatic device and nothing more.

The racist behavior that you see in the movie didn't happen for the most part until after the championship season. That's when the hate mail started pouring in. And the hate was mostly in the form of mail, although it was also enlightening reading some of what was written in contemporary newspaper columns.
