UNC finally wins a game outside the state of North Carolina

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — For almost six years, North Carolina’s football team had only known the agony of losing — and often being embarrassed — outside its home state. Now, it finally knows how all those opponents felt

Heartened by four interceptions and buoyed by another career game from wide receiver Brandon Tate, the Tar Heels blew out Rutgers, 44-12, to break their 20-game streak of futility outside North Carolina.

It gave second-year coach Butch Davis his first road win at UNC; it marked Carolina’s first 30-point win on the road since it beat Clemson in 2001; and the Tar Heels are now 2-0 for the first time since 2000.

All on a rare Thursday night appearance, in front of an ESPN audience.

"Being here for so long, and never winning outside the state of North Carolina, and having the opportunity to come in here and get a win was great for me, and the team, and the guys who have been here for a while and struggled," said senior linebacker Mark Paschal. "E I think it’s just a steppingstone for recruiting and the alumni and the fan base. It’s such a big step for the future of the program and these players."

The Tar Heels dominated by doing the things they rarely had managed since winning their last out-of-state contest (at Arizona State on Oct. 5, 2002):

— They protected the ball and did not commit a turnover. The offense stumbled only once, on its second possession of the game, when a fourth-down T.J. Yates (14-for-22, 221 yards, three touchdowns) pass fell incomplete.

— They made big plays — particularly Tate, who set a school record in UNC’s opener with 397 all-purpose yards. As an encore, he had four catches for a career-high 138 yards Thursday- including a 69-yard, second-quarter touchdown grab that marked his career-long catch. He also scored on a 12-yard end-around run.

— They forced turnovers. Cornerbacks Charles Brown and Kendric Burney had first-half interceptions, and Quan Sturdivant picked one off in the fourth quarter. But the biggest came with 9:55 left in the third, when linebacker Bruce Carter picked off Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel (25-for-40, one touchdown, three interceptions) and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown. That gave UNC a 31-6 lead.

"We played sound football; we played with responsibility instead of trying to do too much like we did against McNeese State (in the season opener)," Burney said.

Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks also hauled in two touchdowns for Carolina, and Jay Wooten, who handled all of the kicking duties, made three field goals.

Meanwhile, Rutgers — now 0-2 for the first time since 2002 — finished with more yards (383) than Carolina (378) but didn’t manage to score a touchdown until the fourth quarter.

By then, the Tar Heels were already pouring it on, then eventually celebrating, as so many of their road opponents had done before.

"Usually, we’re on the other end of the ’V’," Tate said. "But this time, everyone was all laughs and smiles."

It reminds me of an SEC game a few years ago... something about Tennessee having to take a bus ride down to LSU. ESPN was all over it, talking about how big of a disadvantage it was and how it would get them out of the routine, etc.

Unless the players are autistic, I don't think a group of 18-22 year olds are going to collapse under a little change. ESPN was bitching like a bus ride would destroy the team, while the players should be (and probably are) thankful everyday they can take flights instead of having to take long rides like.... uh, the vast majority of college athletes. :banghead:

tk13

Well, it might sound bad to say, but I would not be surprised if a lot of athletes for premier teams and programs probably would complain and be thrown for a loop if they aren't catered to and have to rough it. Some of these guys aren't nearly as mature as we probably think.... as a lot of 18-22 year olds are...

I went to a DII school, so I haven't seen it first hand... I wasn't thinking about maturity, just the ability to go with the flow, but you're probably right. If you've been told you're the greatest whatever since high school, there's probably a psychological effect when telling those players that they have to get out of bed early or whatever. I guess the coaches can only play the "nobody's going to feel sorry for you when you lose" card for so long when the media is making all sorts of excuses for you before you ever take the field.
