I'm getting closer to having a satisfactory solution to a user-optional word filter. My next question is, for those of you would want some level of word filtering, is it important to you to have control over what's filtered, or would a server-level option suffice?

Thanks for your input. I hope to have a solution in place sometime this weekend.

I'm fine either way...

For the record, the server-side filter would have at a minimum the words:

f***
c***
n*****

So I guess you're voting if you'd rather have control over adding on top of those.

I think you answered your own question. Many of the filters in place are there simply because the former General Manager, President, and Managing Partner had a warped sense of humor.

The only one I care about is the first one, really. It just seems silly to be able to say shit and not fuck.

no preference here, sticks and stones and all that stuff....
but it's cool that people who know their kids may be on can filter out what they don't want them to read.

various forms of the Lord's name taken in vain

I don't disagree, but there's no way to tell when it's "normal" and when it's "in vain" from a text standpoint.

Not that it really matters, but I switched off the built-in filtering last night and went to replacements. That's why you're getting a couple of letters through the filter.

You mean I'll have to type out all those naughty words just so they're blocked? Ohh internets, you have offended my delicate sensibilities.....

It's a little complicated, but based on the results of the poll, my thinking is that...

By default (and for guests), the normal filters we've always had will apply. Registered users will have the option of either:
-Changing their style to "Full Featured (no filters)" that won't apply the filters.
-Adding additional words they want filtered in their User CP.

So you'll only have to type out the naughty words if you want more than the defaults blocked.

on our personal options can we have a filtered word say something else?
Like I want to filter the term "Print 'em" and have it read "God Hates Us" or "eat shit Carl, you filthy dirtbag. Take your year _ of that five year plan and toss Clark's salad with it." Or something inbetween.....

The short answer is "no." The add-on I (finally) got to work just does the ***'s.
