Digg it del.icio.us AIM Mangino to urge KU students to refrain from profane chant
By J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH
The Kansas City Star
LAWRENCE | Kansas coach Mark Mangino will make a personal plea to the KU students, encouraging them not to continue with the profane pre-kickoff chant at the Jayhawks’ home games, KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said.

The chant — based on a line from the 1998 Adam Sandler comedy “The Waterboy” — states, “Rip his (expletive) head off,” referring to the opposing team’s kickoff return man.

KU will send a video of Mangino speaking to the student body over e-mail on Thursday, and the video will be replayed before the game on Saturday.

This latest attempt to stop the chant began last Friday when University Daily Kansan editor Matt Erickson called a meeting that included Marchiony, Director of University Relations Todd Cohen, student body President Adam McGonigle and KU linebacker Mike Rivera.

Vailpass isn't a mountain the throughway to all the ski runs. Once you come out of the Ike you know you are almost there.
Steamboat rocks although there isn't as much whiskey swigging as there is blowing bowls in the pine trees in the middle of the run.

You confuse censorship with etiquette and good taste. Just because a word exists doesn't mean it should be used. I doubt you would scream "Tackle that n*****!" because you think it sounds funny.

Break out your dictionary and look up the words "maturity" and "civility". Set a higher standard for yourself. Be a little more creative. You don't have to use gutter language to make a point. KU is known for a recognizable, original cheer. I'd rather not be known for the other one.

I'm not going to defend the classiness of the chant. However, it seems people forget what it was to be a kid. Kids never toe or cross the line, ever, right?

Also, this isn't racist, so that comparison doesn't work.

Since when have college students ever been mature? I'm usually on your side (Why can't they be?) but that's just not the reality.

This isn't about your kids. It's about other people.

Stop determining what's right and wrong for other people.

You have no right to dictate to others in public just because your ****ing kids are around. Stop using them as an excuse to push your values on other people.

Would you take your kids to a ****ing sports bar?

Depends on the sports bar.

The one I hang out in most of the time is a sports bar/family restaurant. The bar area is for the adult patrons, and the family dining is off away from the bar. The first time I hear 50 guys at the bar yelling in unison, "Rip his ******* head off" will be my last time in the bar. Considering I drop a couple grand in there a year, I doubt that will ever happen.

I don't sit at the bar with my kids unless we're the only ones there.

As far as what's right and wrong for other people, that's a matter of subjective truth versus objective truth. Words have power, and the more you use certain words, the less power they have. I never cuss around my kids... but when the time comes in their teenage years and they really screw up, that's when the power of those words will reveal themselves. If you curse all the time, then when the time comes to really make a point, you've already played your best card.

Like I stated, young man. You raise your kids the way you see fit, and I'll do the same. It's my responsibility to protect them and fashion their environment. If that means helping some folks discover their own personally flaws, I accept that responsibility as well. Consider yourself better off because you read this post. Someday you might understand it.

I expect some unpleasantry, without a doubt. But if I can influence a situation, I will. Most civilized people will realize that they're in a family environment and edit themselves.

I don't usually make a big deal out of it, standing on some soapbox and preaching. I get their attention, say "Hey, there's kids around. You might want to watch your language." Evertime I've done that, people have been contrite and ceased their use of foul language.

The funny thing is that people can always make their point without having to resort to cursing. From my perspective, using foul language is usually demonstrative of poor language skills and below average creativity.

I think you're in a world of hurt when your kids get to adolescence. Kids are rebellious.

You are talking about silencing an entire student body. That just ain't going to happen. If this was say a restaurant and the group was of 6, you have a much bigger case of "civility" and "etiquette". At a football game, with massive amounts of people (kids mainly), alcohol and the like, you don't have that kind of luxury. Therefore, if you don't like it, don't take your kids there.

It's like you complaining about what's on the television unaware or unwilling to change the channel.

I'm sitting in the FAMILY zone. If someone wants to go sit in the student section and have a conversation and drop an F-bomb, that's his business. 6,000 students yelling it in unison is a different thing.

You don't get it at all. I'm the one who has been dictated to - I've been told that if I want to bring my kids to the game and have a reasonable chance to deflect foul behavior and language, I have to SIT HERE. We all define obscenity differently. We all have lines that we think shouldn't be crossed, whether it's a line of good taste, a line of morality, a line of acceptable behavior.

What will end up happening is that when they draw up plans for next years tickets, they'll reduce the number of tickets available to students, and that will continue until the chant stops. The real power lies with those that have the money, the alumni that want to bring their kids to their alma mater to enjoy a football game. Those seats are worth a lot of money, and the alumni will pay more for those seats than the students can.

I doubt it. The tickets are available to anyone who buys a student sports pass. They don't guarantee a seat, however. If they decrease the number, you'll see an increase in price. I guess that's fair if you try to legislate your morality on others.

I've seen it work. Wichita State had a similar issue when I went to school there. We'd yell all kinds of things, from the "We're gonna beat the hell out of you" to "Your momma's a dyke!". Funny how that all changed after Lew became the AD.

I'm not saying that the students shouldn't have fun at the game. I just think that particular chant is in bad taste and that it ought to be replaced. If you were in my situation, I'm sure you'd feel the same way. In these situations, the alumni usually win.

Perhaps. Again, I won't defend the classiness of the chant nor the maturity of it.

However, I will argue against what seems to be your "right" not to be offended by things said at an event you freely chose to go to. Don't expect everyone to behave how you parent your household.

Not an issue. Kids are within walking distance to elementary and junior high. By the time they hit high school, they'll be old enough for learner's permits, and my wife can always drop them off on the way to KU.

Guys, my kids have heard the words. They know what cuss words are, and they talk about the kids at schools that use bad language. Like I said, my kids are smart. We talk about it, and they know that my wife and I don't use that kind of language (around them), and that it's not acceptable.

Foul language is foul language for a reason. It's there, but just because they exist it doesn't mean you MUST use them. You talk about "freedom of speech", but that's a crock of it - there is nothing than can be expressed with cursing that can't be expressed without cursing. Braincase's brainwashed kids remind of a dipshit I knew as a youth. His name was Donovan Reed. He was a real grade-A dipshit. We went to the same high school together. Occasionally, at school, I'd drop an F-bomb or a random cuss. I don't even remember at this point.

But I'm sure Donovan does. That's because he actually went to his daddy and told on me. Yep, he went and tattled on poor little 15-year old Claythan. I had been cussing at school, and someone in our congregation was going to know, dammit!

So he told his daddy, who was a "ministerial servant" at our Jemimah's Witnesses church. His daddy had the gall to come up to me at the next meeting and ask me about my horrible transgressions at school.

Being a spineless pussy raised in the grand old Jemimah's Witness tradition, I of course lied and told him no, I had not been swearing. Looking back, if I had possessed an ounce of backbone or self-respect, I would have told Donovan's dad that yes, I swore like a fucking sailor at school, and if he didn't like it, he could kiss my devil-worshipping ass. And also, that it was none of his fucking business since he was a glorified magazine-stand clerk/audio slave.

But I'm sure Donovan does. That's because he actually went to his daddy and told on me. Yep, he went and tattled on poor little 15-year old Claythan. I had been cussing at school, and someone in our congregation was going to know, dammit!

Likewise, it's completely arbitrary that they are "foul" in the first place. COMPLETELY ARBITRARY.

Social mores define the obscene. In one African community, the words you and I might look at as being obscene are the term even their doctors use to discuss medical maladies - the proper medical terms (that are accepted as part of any human sexuality class in the states) are the terms that define their foul language.

But if some 4 year old nephew came up to you and asked you where babies came from, I doubt you'd say "Well, your dad stuck his **** in your mommy's ****, and he ****ed her pretty good. He shot his *** and the little sperms fertilized the egg."

There are some words we can explain to kids pretty easily. "Crap" and it's variants are pretty easy, because we all become aware of feces at a pretty young age, like around 0. "Damn", "hell" and "ass" aren't too bad. Once we start breaking into any organ or term involved in the reproductive process, things can get complicated. I don't need to explain that stuff to a seven year-old, so I'd rather wait until a more appropriate time.

Up yours. I take two daughters, age 11 & 10, and a son, age 7, to every home game. Foul language is unnecessary at events that are billed as family entertainment. I chhos to sit in the "Family Zone", and I've jumped teenagers and college students for using foul language in that part of the stadium. When I hear the cheer, I yell, "Rip his bloody head off" so my kids can't discern what the idiots in the student section are really yelling.

You want to call me a pussy for protecting my kids innocence, I dare you to do it to my face.

I took my boys to a game a couple weeks ago. We were in the family zone. We couldn't make out what they were saying from where we were sitting. Of course, I already knew what they chant but I did not share that with the youngsters.

I can understand where you are coming from. My daughter is almost two and I really can't have her around when my friends are over because they cuss like sailors and she is like a tape recorder. However, I don't ask them to change their behavior. I have come to a point where I only invite them over when she is out with mom or staying at Grandma's. I also know eventually she will hear it, pick a word up, and I will have to explain right from wrong. There is no way I can protect her from never hearing a bad word. She will hear them from me soon enough :D

I obviously don't have the same stance on cursing you do. So I understand you have your right to feel this way. Language doesn't bother me generally though and I'm not really sure why you would think "ripping a bloody head off" or "ripping a fuckin head off" are different? They both present a violent image that isn't necessarily for a childs ears. I also don't understand how threatening physical violence on someone who says fuck in front of your kid is a good example either. To be honest, I doubt they even understand what they are saying unless you tell them. I hear chants on games all the time that I can't make out.

I definately wouldn't ask someone at a game to watch their language because that happens at any sporting event. Most people have a few drinks, let loose and the last thing they are thinking about is watching their mouth. You should just have the conversation with your kids and tell them to ignore it. If you say they talk about kids using bad language then you have obviously influenced them and they can ignore it. If it's that big of an issue you shouldn't bring your kids to a game. Whether you like it or not it will never stop. If you as a parent decide that an enviroment isn't appropriate for your kids then keep them out of it. You can't expect the World to change for you.

Lol. I don't think you will ever get it. I was not trying to compare cussing with murder by any means. Hell, I made the same argument to my mom when I was young. I think it is silly that certain words are deemed inappropriate by society. But when you have young kids, you don't want them to hear that stuff and then go repeat it. Honestly, I am guilty of cussing like a sailor at times (usually when I'm pissed) and in front of my kids, too. So, I have no room to talk there. But I understand what BC is saying. Claythan kind of has a point here. While I think it's rude for someone to disregard a request to watch their profanity around children, you have to realize that they paid for their ticket. They have as much of a right to be offended at the thought of you asking than you do by them not submitting.

Kansas students ignore coach's plea, use profane chant

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Thousands of Kansas students ignored coach Mark Mangino's plea and went ahead with a profane chant when No. 16 Kansas kicked off against Colorado on Saturday.

As the chant resonated across Memorial Stadium, alumni and other fans booed.

The chant was first heard at Kansas in 2003 and has brought complaints from university officials and fans who say it's an embarrassment. Taking their cue from an Adam Sandler movie, the students yell, "Rip his head off" -- with an expletive tossed in -- every time their team kicks off.

Mangino, who is popular and was the national coach of the year last season, sent a video via e-mail to students Thursday afternoon. It was shown on the video board at Memorial Stadium shortly before kickoff.

"Do us a favor," Mangino said in the video. "Let's cut out that kickoff chant."

The alumni cheered the video.

But when Kansas kicked off for the first time midway through the second quarter, students yelled the chant, anyway, and the alumni section began booing loudly.

"It's a difficult situation," linebacker Mike Rivera said. "We love our fans. That's a great thing that they're doing something together, but there's some negative things with the younger kids there and the families and hearing it on TV. It's not necessarily representing our university that well."

Senior linebacker Joe Mortensen said the chant serves as motivation.

"When I try to hit people," Mortensen said, "that's what I try to do."
