Report: Larry Johnson at risk of suspension?

Johnson
ESPN.com's Michael Smith reports that Larry Johnson is at risk of a league suspension after being involved in a physical altercation with a woman at a Kansas City nightclub.
If this sounds familiar, it is. This latest case happened during the Chiefs bye, but it's the second such incident for Johnson this year. He's had a few more during his career, which could force the NFL to react. It's unclear whether or not Johnson has been or will be charged in the incident. "It's just a matter of for how long," one source told Smith. The Chiefs say they know about the incident, and have handed the matter over to the league. Oct. 19 - 6:58 pm et

Sources: Johnson faces potential suspension after latest incident

Chiefs coach Herman Edwards benched Larry Johnson for Sunday's game against Tennessee for violating team rules. Now, Kansas City's star running back soon might incur additional punishment, this time from the NFL -- and for different reasons.

During the Chiefs' recent bye week, Johnson was involved in a physical altercation with a woman at a Kansas City nightclub, sources told ESPN -- the second such late-night incident he's found himself in this year. The incident is consistent with a pattern of off-field behavior that league sources expect will lead to a suspension for Johnson under the league's personal conduct policy.

It's unclear whether or not Johnson has been or will be charged in the incident.

"It's just a matter of for how long," one source said.

The Chiefs acknowledged Johnson's latest troubles.

"We are aware of the most recent incident involving Larry Johnson and we are very disappointed with his involvement," team president Carl Peterson said in a statement Sunday. "We will cooperate fully with the Kansas City authorities who are investigating the matter. We have also made the NFL office in New York aware of the incident and officials there are conducting their own independent investigation.

"Based upon the NFL Player Conduct Policy, we will have no further comment."

League spokesman Greg Aiello declined comment Sunday.

Johnson has been involved in at least three other incidents during his six-year NFL career; the bye week incident is his fourth -- not third, as reported last week -- and second of 2008. Each incident involved one or more of three common denominators: a female accuser, alcohol, and a nightclub. In the case of the past three, it's been all of the above.

Johnson already faces a December court date on a simple assault charge stemming from a Feb. 24 incident in Kansas City, news of which surfaced last week. A 26-year-old woman accused the 28-year-old Johnson of pushing her head with his open hand. If convicted Johnson could be sentenced to up to six months in jail and fined $500.

In 2003, Johnson was accused by a former girlfriend of brandishing a gun during an argument. He was charged with aggravated assault and misdemeanor domestic battery, but those charges were dropped the following year after Johnson agreed to enter a domestic violence diversion program.

Three years ago, a woman accused Johnson of pushing her to the floor after an argument. The woman later changed her story, decided not to press charges and missed three court hearings, leading to the dismissal of the charges.

Johnson has rushed for 417 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs, who lost to Tennessee to fall to 1-5. In August 2007, the club signed their 2003 first-round draft pick to a six-year, $45 million extension that included $19 million in guarantees.

The way I see this going, the Chiefs may continue to deactivate him until the NFL steps in and gives him the 4 game suspension, where I'm sure LJ will appeal both the deactivation and the suspension, which will drag this thing out along.

The team isn't burying anything, and Clayton has never said that. He's simply said that he knows what happened, and is not allowed to say. Are you pissed at Keitzman as well? He spent an hour on the air about this disgracful act of LJ's that warranted a 4 game suspension - yet no one is up his ass like they are Clayton's.

Again, according to Michael Smith, the team was PROACTIVE and sent the information regarding this incident over the bye week to the league to review.

The Chiefs aren't talking because frankly, they don't have to.

The League isn't talking because they haven't investigated yet.

What about Keitzman and 810?

Are they a shitty organization as well?

Christ, Keitzman hates the Chiefs, yet he has kept quiet.

Why is that?

I have no idea if this is accurate, but KK said he couldn't say because he could get into legal trouble. Not sure if this is true...

Reporters have to be careful with this kind of stuff, however. Thus all the required "allegedly" comments that we often hear on the news.

1. People said that LJ should be cut/traded due to the repeated off-field issues he's had.
2. You stated that he'd not been charged or convicted of anything, so he (LJ) is fine in your book (LJ may have been charged at one/some point).
3. I pointed out that Pacman Jones has also not been charged or convicted (again, Pacman may have been charged somewhere along the line but not convicted) of anything, and that at some point you just had to cut loose the guys that can't stay out of trouble.
4. You attempted to claim that Pacman is a different situation even though neither has been convicted of anything and both have been involved in assault-type situations.
5. I called you out on your BS attempt to have it both ways.
6. You attempted to backpedal like Pacman.
7. I provided direct quotes from you to illustrate your stupidity/duplicity.

There...that should about catch you up.

The bigger question is why was a communications outlet calling LJ out?

Whenever you hear someone say, "they can't" or "they're not allowed," you are listening to a communications outlet.

Who's mostly responsible for releasing the information?

It seems, the front office kept releasing a back story that conflicted with the main story. National papers of record and small newspapers do not do stories on a single source. However, the Chiefs wanted to get the word out. And they did by creating confusion. Here's how it works. The media will do a story if a rumor becomes persistant.

Here's a few excerpts:

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Johnson attended practice on Thursday. His status for Sunday is unknown. Coach Herm Edwards is expected to address the situation after practice.

Coach Herm Edwards refused to specify what team rules the two-time Pro Bowler broke. ...

It's official. Larry won't play this week per Herm Edwards for violating team rules. This "suspension" is coming from the Chiefs and not the league.

It went on and on and on until it caught the attention of the league.

The media reported this week that the Chiefs were trying to trade LJ. So what better time to test the Chiefs' rb than now?

ESPN
Kolby Smith, who had 407 yards on 112 carries last year when Johnson missed the last eight games with a foot injury, will probably start. Also certain to see plenty of action will be rookie Jamaal Charles, a third-round pick out of Texas who has carried 21 times for 98 yards.

"Now this gives other players a great opportunity to play," Edwards said. "More than they probably anticipated they were going to play. Jamaal hasn't played a whole lot in first-down situations. He's another guy we've drafted and we like."

Unless of course they were "allowed/permitted" to report it.

Let me begin by saying, ESPN is working hard to instill credibility and trust to its news programing. Sports Illustrated is ahead of ESPN leaps and bounds in print and online. Currently ESPN has to decide if Sports Center should be hosted by entertainers or journalists -- The entertainers can still express their personalities in another ESPN entity away from the news center.

In 2007, ESPN hired Ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber, former sports editor from The New York Times to critically analyze ESPN's news division. Schreiber said it best when she wrote:

"I will be a strong advocate for placing firewalls between sports news and the many pressures to distort or dilute the news -- if only so that we can remember what news is. Blurry news serves the sports fan about as well as blurry telecasting."

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=schreiber_leanne&id=2826351

Here's her updated work for ESPN. She's a hard hitter:

http://search.espn.go.com/results?searchString=le%20anne%20schreiber&start=15&dims=4294799085

Le Anne is in the second year of a two year tenure.

Dylan
10-20-2008, 12:13 AM
Here's what Le Anne Schreiber had to say about Tony Kornheiser:

"And I will add that my one significant overlap with present-day ESPN arises from those days, when it was both my pleasure and my grief to be the young Tony Kornheiser's boss at The New York Times. Why grief? Because The Times kept pressuring me to make Tony more Timesian, and Tony kept pressuring me to make the Times more Tonian. My failure in both directions led to the parting of Tony and The Times, which was no doubt for the best of both those institutions."

http://search.espn.go.com/le-anne-schreiber/archive/4294799085

This past year ESPN, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo Sports are selectively hiring away newspapers top talent. ESPN is offering sports columnists and journalists up $350,00 a year to come aboard.
